I remember Xmas telly on ITV. Suddenly, the adverts are mainly holiday destinations and travel agents! Great nostalgia.

The adverts were better than the main TV programmes of today... The Xmas tv back then lasted about 2 weeks and it was worth watching sometimes before we all had videos you had to miss good programmes on one channel to watch good programmes on another ... ...

I do miss Dennis Norden - he was a fine script writer, and all-round lovely man. Lived to be 96 - wish he could have gone on forever.

What a blast from the past. From my parents, to my 4 brothers and 3 sisters, we would all cram into our sitting room on a sunday nht to watch this together. It was the only time we actually watched something together without fighting. Great memories. Thank you ❤️

I met Judith Chalmers years ago in Blackpool, at the helicopter ride and we had a short chat waiting for the flight. She was absolutely lovely, so sweet and kind. It is a really good memory.

I can't belive Dennis Norden only died last month! Bless him. The worse part of getting old as a child of the 70's is that everybody you remember from your childhood is either a nonce or dead, or both.

A real tonic. These shows are always as fresh and funny as the day they were first shown!

He was a brilliant storyteller, that’s what made it so great to watch. You not only had the BEST outtakes , but he set the mood better than anyone 😂

Fantastic. I was allowed up at the age of ten to watch this at our big family Christmas at my Nan's farmhouse. I remember the "Cannonball Run" clip very well, and it still gives me a really good chuckle today.

Good on him for getting to 96. RIP

But don't worry, I am sure the next pro corporate centre right tree Stump in a tie sir kid starver himself will solve all problems while paving the road to an even worse tyrant who will rise to lead a reconstituted Tory party after him, if he doesn't become one himself given he has all the behaviours of an authoritarian puppet already present and provided there are enough Tory voters left alive by the time his terms are done. Good to see John Noakes, Peter Purves and Val Singleton, the best era of Blue Peter.

I came here to watch this for a laugh then i felt so sad to hear his passing. He was the god of the blooper reel and will be dearly missed.

Excuse me? "Worth it" doesn't necessarily refer to money.

TV in the early to mid 80's was simpler and much better than today's.

The 10 year old me was probably playing Manic Miner on my ZX Spectrum while my parents watched this :)

Sadly unlikely - the Spectrum wasn't released until 4 months after this went out, and Manic Miner wasn't released until 1983 :)

@@poopdaddy4217 73 here. I played my 48k rubber keys to death. Manic Miner was fantastic even though I couldn't get past level 4. I must of had the patience of a saint back then as I would play for hours on end. I miss those innocent days.

glad this has the ads in it. Kinda gives the younger folk a peak into the era this was made in.

OMG!!! I remember all those adverts . A time when advert were not about ripping you off for equity release , buying or selling your house online , no stupid dances or film and tv packages . I shall watch these again and again and again and again and again .........

I was mesmerised by the ads before I remembered it was good old Denis Norden on!

great upload, I have an old VHS copy of this somewhere too. Looking at the 'Lineup' for ITV Boxing Day, my god, ITV really did throw in the towel at Christmas didn't they lol. BBC stuffed them like Turkeys, every year lol.

I still remember watching this the night it was aired!

4:23 nice to see Hoges (before Crocodile Dundee) even if it is a Foster's beer ad. Around the same time he (and John Cornell) also appeared in various magazine / poster ads for Winfield cigarettes (carrying the famous slogan "anyhow ... have a Winfield").

33:43 to 34:05 - This little anecdote from that particular broadcaster (can't remember his name) about how he was finally able to perfect the pronunciation of a West African politician's name was so brilliantly deadpan - hilarious - my favourite clip in the show.

Just realised that the Jamaica tourist ad uses the same tune as John Lennon's "Merry Xmas War Is Over".

It was from a Betamax tape. And 1981 really isn't ancient for either Betamax or VHS - the oldest Beta tapes are from 1975, the oldest VHS from 1976.

This date would have been the last time there was a 7.00pm handover from Thames to LWT, as the time would change to 5.15pm from next week.

these series are the best much funnier than the later series.

And to think these specials rendered Benny Hill's contrived blooper sketches obsolete, leading to him cutting them out completely after 1979.

i always wondered why the Thames / LWT region always used those three anonymous squares to start advert breaks when other regions across the UK would begin with their station logo or at least a version of it. Sue Peacock always looked like a sex starved librarian to me. Mind you she WAS right to mention the weather conditions. the winter of 1981/82 was HIDEOUSLY cold and snowy, one of the worst i have ever suffered through.Congrats on picture quality!.

As if Denis Norden is still alive and in his 90s ..good on him I liked this show 😎

This is how we used to watch FAIL videos before the internet. At 37:50 when the boy starts pulling faces and bullying his brother on live TV while his father gives a speech is comedy at its best. I love how the cameraman tries to get him out of shot. Also the Australian newsreader having a cigarette break and looking at his watch. This show was a must see. RIP Dennis Norden.

That first outtake / cockup is one of the best ever, the ,'poor and slaves, poor and FREE , I should say'. Who is that man ?

I keep expecting the logo for Grace Brothers at 53:50 and 54:13 when Frank Thornton appears.
