Meneer, I'm still watching it cause I have to pause the video after each phrase to read the English and practice the pronunciation and I have noticed that in some words you pronounce an 'l' where in the written form there's an 'r', besides other minor differences from the spoken sentences. Is this a trait of your local variety/dialect? I just ask that cause this helps me in my practice of listening, which has been confirmed when I ask speakers of other regional languages I try to learn and also to help others who might be wanting to learn it but find difficulty in recognizing the spoken words in their written forms. Thanks in advance for your attention and your kindness to do these videos! Just a suggestion, if you allow me: it would be wonderful to add an option to slow down the pace of the narrative cause, contrary to what your critics had said, it still feels a bit fast for us foreign learners and having an option to slow down the audio at each person´s own needs would help coax learners to study the language even more.

Thanks for listening so carefully! In fact, to hardly pronounce the letter R is a Dutch thing. It is definitely not an L. It is simply so soft that only Dutch people notice it. It happens with the letter N at the end too. For example Meneer Wiersma uit Nederland / Mr Wiersma from the Netherlands is pronounced by many Dutch people almost as Meneea Wieasma uit Nedahland. I myself only noticed, listening back now, the missing R in my pronunciation of Nederlân, sounding like Nedelân. The pronunciation of the letter R is often a marker of social class and region. Posh people plus some cities of the Holland region of the Netherlands would have an American R. Many others would have a soft more French sort of R. Frisians and Caribbean Dutch would have strong rolling R's like Scots or Spaniards. So, as you notice my letter R is not American, nor especially rolling, although a bit. I guess my pronunciation is a general educated but not posh North-Netherlands accent, both when I speak Dutch as when I speak Frisian. About speaking so fast, I know, I'm sorry. Any slower would scare off my local audience in the region. That's why I included subtitles, expecially for you I did the English ones too. The next video will also be in Frisian, about cities, I'll try to work on the slowly-yet-still-lively pace of speaking. I'm not advanced enough in my computer skills to slow down existing videos. @@meneerwiersma Thank you so much for your thoughtful response! I do appreciate all the explanations and they set me wondering how these people who pronounce it with an American 'r' might sound, it must be incredibly soft! I would myself try to pronounce Frisian words with the English 'r' at times just to see how they would sound with it and I found it fantastic, but I couldn´t imagine some native Dutch speakers actually did that in their local Dutch accent. I've heard Twent(sk) the Dutch Low Saxon and found it much softer too, truly beautiful. I always say that English has been the softest a Germanic language has become and Danish and Bokmal are heading that way too but the latter has tones and I dread tones in language:-). Danish still has to soften their 'r' and there 'd' too. Don´t worry about making it slower then, I don´t want you to be bullied by those critics who don´t realize that foreign ears find it quit hard to follow the natural pace of native speakers:-) You're most kind, sir! @@meneerwiersma Sorry for bothering you again, do you think it would be feasible to make a phonetic transcription of the words or a vocabulary with them? I ask this cause I've noticed that in some parts there seems to be some striking differences from the written words and even some liaison (between words). What is puzzling me now is a segment at 3:56. I must confess that after the words "watsto', instead of hearing 'ús grûn tisnkomst' I hear something like 'tsjinkomst yn /y/ ús grûn' (with a sort of glide /y/ before the 'ús' and a slight pause or an inserted vowel (as in a svarabhakti) between the 'g' and the 'r' in 'grûn'. Could you please try to transcribe it (i.e. that segment) in phonetic symbols when you have some free time? Forgive me for bothering you with that but it would help to add such notes on the postings on my edublogs. I would also like to take the chance to ask your permission to quote your previous observations on the pronunciation of Frisian pronunciation on the postings, giving you the due credit for them, of course.

@@joalexsg9741 Hi, indeed you caught my mistake in the subtitles, I was reading out loud and said the verb tsjinkomst (you encounter) before the yn'e grûn (in the ground), and I paused after noticing my mistake but kept recording anyway. The order is not wrong, both are fine. Unfortunately I am not a qualified linguist, I am a geography teacher. It would be a different level of expertise for me to make a phonetic transcription for you. I will include something about phonetics in one of my next videos. About the letter R a little fun fact I'd like to add: the American R is not Frisian, but it does exist in Dutch, my comment about posh was about the R in the entire Netherlands, in the Dutch language. In Frisian you got the rolling R "rollende r" and you got the French r in the throat, which we call braue "to brew". Most Frisians use either, not both. Not everyone can do rolling R's I guess. Of course you can use my comments on the letter R, but I'm not a linguist! Just consider it an observation from a native speaker who didn't study for this. I don't need any credit for this general knowledge. Finally, if you are really into Frisian, the experts are the Afûk, which is an abbreviation of General Frisian Education Commission. Don´t worry, I just try to check if my listening is really getting all the words as due and when I find something that my ears register as different from the written word in a video of a language I try to learn I always ask those who made the video. You are doing an amazing job already! Please, keep it up. I will add your observations on that post I've made sharing your video so that those who try to follow the spoken words can be warned of these differences from the written task. Your activism is invaluable! Don´t ever give it up.

heel helder en duidelijk! Ik kan het mis hebben maar had je niet al zoiets op je kanaal? In een land als Nederland is het heel belangrijk om dit te weten anders kun je een deel van de geschiedenis nooit helemaal begrijpen.

Ik snap natuurlijk wel dat je dan een vrij beperkt aantal geïnteresseerden krijgt.... je bent een goede leraar. mooi kort en bondig, net genoeg om een basis te leggen en interesse te wekken. voor welk niveau zijn ze gemaakt?

@@evastapaard2462 Wat een leuke reactie, en aanmoediging! Dankjewel dat je mij een goede leraar vindt! Ik doe mijn best. Voor de klas maak ik meer grapjes dan hier op youtube, en doen we actievere dingen, ik gebruik youtube zodat iedereen een uitleg van meerdere lessen in 1x kan terugkijken op een later moment. Ja klopt de geschiedenis van Friesland is een beetje een niche onderwerp denk ik. Ik zal erover nadenken. Het volgende Friese filmpje wat ik maak is ook de Friese versie van een Nederlands filmpje wat ik al gemaakt heb, waarin ik laat zien hoe Leeuwarden over de eeuwen gegroeid is. Mijn filmpjes zijn bedoeld voor iedereen, voor elke leeftijd is er wel wat te halen, maar qua moeilijkheidsgraad richt ik me op klas 1, 2 en 3 van de middelbare school.

@@meneerwiersma Ik heb zelf de opleiding docente tekenen gevolgd (helaas niet geheel voltooid want zwanger) en mijn dochter volgt nu de opleiding docente Engels. Het willen doorgeven van kennis zit blijkbaar in het bloed... uiteindelijk heb ik zelf alleen maar volwassenen educatie gedaan. en heel veel natuurgids werk. Om eerlijk te zijn lijkt het me heel zwaar om voor een klas met pubers te staan dus ik heb grote bewondering voor je. ik kan me nog heel goed herinneren hoe ik me toen in de klas gedroeg...arme leraren! je doet het echt goed en ik kan me heel goed voorstellen dat je een leuke en grappige leraar bent. waar geef je les? in welke stad?

@@evastapaard2462 Ah wat leuk, tekenen! Ik ben ook tekenaar! Ik maak pentekeningen zwart/wit van steden, bomen, koraalrif en keltische knopen als hobby. Mijn doel voor 2021 is daar een website van te maken. Natuurgidswerk en volwasseneducatie lijkt mij ook heel leuk, wat je vertelt. Nee hoor, het lesgeven aan pubers is niet zwaar als je elkaar eenmaal kent en als je zelf stevig in je schoenen staat en oprechte belangstelling voor hen hebt. En als iets niet werkt, probeer je iets anders. Ik zorg gewoon dat de uitleg niet lang duurt, er iets van een puzzel of quiz is voor de moeilijke woorden, en dat er veel te kiezen valt. Dat zie je in mijn nieuw onderwijsconcept filmpje. Alleen het eerste jaar voor de klas is overleven, omdat je jezelf aan het uitproberen bent hoe je dit nou weer aan moet pakken. Als leraren een burnout krijgen, ligt dat nooit aan de kinderen maar altijd aan alles eromheen, het gebrek aan functioneringsgesprekken waar waardering of sancties aan hangen, slechte communicatie en de werkdruk, al die avonden werk, dat is wat mensen nekt, is mijn mening. Nooit de kinderen! Ik wens je dochter veel succes met de lerarenopleiding!

Die taal klink soos Afrikaans, maar ook zoals Nederlands, toch interessant 😅😅

When youtube automatically recognizes the language of many frisian videos as dutch but you don't have dutch subtitles and have english subtitles. This speaks volumes about the conflict between psychology and reality. West Frisian may sound more like Dutch now due to the national government's influence. This proves that linguistic classification is only arbitrary. People's psychology blindly trusts what academics think about linsguistic relationships, not realizing that this blind trust has turned this arbitrariness into confirmation/selection bias (self-fulfilling prophecy). This pretend-until-you-do attitude is the latest confirmation of the remnants of Western idealism (i.e. ideas over matter/reality).

Indeed the Frisian I hear daily sounds closer and closer to Dutch, compared to how the older generation speaks. The Dutch I hear daily on TV is closer and closer to English, in choice of words, piles of English loan words and even the word order. In the end all Germanic languages are branching off the same roots in prehistory, sometimes forming a language continuum -changing slightly from village to village until it seems a new language-, and maybe merging again into regional varieties of World English in the very distant future, so academics can talk endlessly about the distinction between dialect or language! :)

@@ISWI665 Oh, en ik heb nog wel zo mijn best gedaan! Maar je hebt gelijk, Fries is mijn tweede taal en niet mijn eerste taal. Zelfs al kom ik uit Friesland en zit ik mijn hele leven tussen de Friezen. Toch probeer ik wat filmpjes te maken voor op school, omdat het zonde is als de taal verdwijnt. En ik kan gewoon Fries zoals je ziet, maar mijn klank is soms wat meer Nederlands. Alhoewel er zijn wel meer Friezen die zo klinken als ik, het hangt er vanaf waar je bent. Maar je hebt goed opgelet!
