It was quite easy for us, we never booked anything in advance. If you're alone it's maybe even easier. There is plenty of hostels in Malaysia which are cheap too. Very cheap in fact for me as a European, even in KL! I would say just go for it but if you'r anxious maybe you shold take someone with you for your first travel, to feel safer ;)

Plenty of accomodation available like hostel, budget, standard, deluxe, studio apartment, 3 room apartment, suite, english house, guest house. Make it easier by (1) choose weekdays (2) plan earlier (3) book via agoda.com or hotelrooms.com.
