Isuzu Trooper | Slow but awesome Budget Overland 4x4

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 1st and 2nd gen Isuzu Trooper is a budget overland truck everyone needs to consider. They fly under the radar, are cheap and AWESOME. 3.2 V6, incredible interior room, grab handles, space to mount things. Choose this over an old 4runner and Pathfinder.
In this video I take the 2nd generation UBS Isuzu Trooper off road to explore its capability, get my take on whether I should consider it as my next overland project. I travel into the LaMadre Mountain west of Las Vegas, do some mild to moderate 4x4 trails and give my take.

Luv the Troopers. Just picked up a junkyard 92 5spd for $900 in Dec. it’s running now. Just took it out to the AZ desert near Ehrenberg. Very capable off-roader. Also picked up a 88 5spd, 2.6 in Williams AZ last month, $1000. Engine issues TBD.

LS swap is possible if you change your manual transmission to the late model trooper AR-5. This one has a removable bell housing and they have a kit that mates an AR5 to LS bolt pattern. The AR5 also bolts up to other interesting stuff like a 2jz...Its pretty exciting and is the reason I bought another trooper recently.

I love my Trooper! I've had several over the years, and you are correct- the 3.2 lacks torque. My current Trooper is a 98 with a 3.5, and I've been impressed by how much more torque it makes over the 3.2. The 3.5 does eat oil, but as long as you keep it topped off, it will run for a long time.

Ya like the 360? I'm MEGA torn on it...I like it at times, but them when its high in the air it really flattens the road ahead making it look smooth. I think knowing where to use it is going to be helpful. I tell you one thing though...post processing and the added editing time is really a con to using it. Plus its on 1080 not 4k. I am hoping to learn how to incorporate it better. I really liked the low to the ground shot and the ability to move the shot around in post. Thanks for watchin Cole!

Yep, they are great. And it just got you a a subscriber from Sweden. :) About that lack of tourque. We probably have the same drivetrain. Mine is a manual 3.2 SOHC 1995 LTD. I have done a lot to troubleshoot mine. But it has kind of dual personalities. Mostly it's rather slow and weak. But it has it's good days too. Not a rocket ship of course, but completely effortless. And mine is both lifted and runs on 33"'s. So I wouldn't be surprised if yours the same. And the strange thing is that it's no logic to it. Mine got very little maintenance from previous owners. So I have kind of "reset" it. Multiple oil services, timing belt etc. cleaned EGR and throttle body, fixed vacuum leaks, new plugs, PCV and a lot more. But nothing did any real difference. So I haven't found the real reason yet, but it may be more often nowadays that it has it's "good days". But I have to say, it is pretty good then. And I know it sounds strange, but fixing the exhaust actually is the only thing where i could see a connection between the good/bad days-rate. And I am talking about exhaust leaks AFTER the cat and sensor. It shouldn't make a huge deal on that kind of engine, but maybe it does? Anyway. It's a keeper. They grow on you more and more. And they seem to survive anything. And a 3.2 SOHC + manual gearbox is probably the best you can get.

I have a video of an older 4runner on the channel. I have yet to own or do a cherokee. The isuzu certainly has the high roof and cubic capacity to do a lot with but the US didnt get any diesels, to my knowledge. This is a big downer of course. The only major issue with these Troopers is how stubby the front axles are...they flex very little. A solid axle swap would be great, but then the lack of power is the next hurdle. These are great vehicles but the US just didnt get the best version with the Japanese diesels...we got 4 banger junk.

I havent gotten to the finished video yet because I got extremely sick. I was kind of managing through it to get the C4 for development of the next kit but my driver side adjuster was frozen on the C5 for me to finish aiming, but that is now installed. I also had the car apart for fitting/prototyping of the stops. Lots happening. Quite a rough past month for me. I am working on a video of the lights, aiming, added feature I am working on, etc, as well as a private video for the prebuyers only, that wont be shown here.

I actually resold this truck pretty quickly. The short axles, lack of suspension range and lack of ac equipment made me move on. These are great candidates for a solid axle swap...because I love the vehicle aside from the front suspension/axles. My mind kept thinking...LS swap and solid axle swap would make this great! In the end, I bought a Tahoe to do just that and sold this. I loved the truck but has to move on

Toyota and Isuzu car brands are the best followed by other Japanese brands. American, Chinese, Korean and European car brands suck because they only care about money and more profit instead of reliability which is the best a car brand should have and affordable price too.

DON'T buy an automatic Isuzu, the 4l30e trans is a crock, weak as and not meant for 4x4. My brother has an Isuzu Bighorn and he is on his 3rd trans in as many years, and this one's on the way out too. You can probably fit a Lexus V8 in there without too much trouble, the manual gearbox and transfer case should be Aisin, which is Toyota, should handle the extra power. I'd definitely keep it, as it's only going to increase in value now.
