Fighting Emma arguably grants you a better ending. This is the worst one but also the most common. Most people choose to stay loyal to Kuro and the last 2 endings more or less require a guide. One of them is called Return and that's probably the best ending out of all 4.

Fun fact: Genichiro has the ability to summon lightning but isshin DOES NOT. He's just so chad that he CATCHES NATURAL LIGHTNING AND THROWS IT.

I dont. With the exception of the shikkimen warriors and the bulls i always fight conservatively and chip bosses down to zero vitality before i seriously cross blades. I usually bait, hit, and back off. Its way more fun that way imo. I like to do that no-hit ‘cos if you don’t get hit you dont lose.

exactly right! well deserved victory indeed.

So the lore is that when Genichiro jumped off the top of Ashina Castle, he went to go find the _other_ mortal blade, which is only mentioned in a miserable letter, I think. It is said to be able to open a gate to hell. When you beat Genichiro at the end of the game, he realizes that he can't win. His entire reason for being is to protect and defend Ashina, and the "Ministry" has taken advantage of Isshin's death to attack the castle. (This is set toward the end of the campaign to unify Japan.) So Genichiro sacrifices himself with the black mortal blade, bringing back Isshin from the dead. (A gateway to hell, remember.) Isshin is now compelled to do what Genichiro wants: to protect Ashina. And he's probably the only one who could do it. It gets a bit iffy here, but I'm guessing that Isshin believes that Lord Kuro and the Dragon's Heritage are necessary for Ashina's protection. Or possibly Genichiro believed such, so now Isshin is compelled to follow Genichiro's dying wish and reason for resurrecting Isshin. And I get the feeling that somehow because of Genichiro's sacrifice, Isshin has some geas magically compelling him to work toward Genichiro's goal. And of course Sekiro is sworn to defend Kuro and sever his immortality, so he and Isshin must fight.

Just to add to this - Isshin and genichiro are actually linked together when he's called back. That's why isshin can suddenly use tomoe's lightning and probably why he also has the goal to protect ashina at all costs. The reason genichiro (and isshin now) want the dragon's blood is that it would make them and their men immortal and impossible to defeat in battle, therefore ashina would never fall. Kuro, living isshin, and co. Don't want this as they know that everyone in ashina are very capable of falling prey to shura and the dragons blood would make this 100x worse, easily causing the destruction of ashina if not the whole of japan (shura ending is basically this happening to you instead of them)

so some clarification Isshin is just an honorable man. he doesn't care about the dragons heritage he is only honoring genichiro's dying wish of protecting Ashina. he even encourages sekiro to kill him. also anyone brought back by the black mortal blade is immortal, which is why sekiro used the crimson mortal blade to kill Isshin. the black blade is also mentioned after you talked to Isshin when you finally got the mortal blade; if you sneak and eavesdrop on him you get a secret dialogue of him saying something along the lines of "so genichiro must have the black mortal blade"

I beat the game 19 times and I never even reflected on this. I just thought it looked cool and went with it. I never played Sekiro for the story though, it's the combat that makes it a masterpiece to me.

@@gentlehoovy5555 You are half right, you see, even sword saint Isshin wanted nothing to do with the dragon's blood, he was simply compelled by the power of "open gate" the black mortal blade to bend to Genichiro's will and fulfill his last wish to bring Ashina back to glory. Genichiro's whole ideal vision for Ashina from the start was to get Kuro to forge an oath with him so he could have the Dragon's blood running through his veins as he sacrificed himself to bring his giga chad grandpa back to his prime, which equals an unmatched powerhouse of a swordsman + the power of the dragon bloodline's immortality, hence why the cutscene right before you fight him for the first time shows him asking Emma about Isshin's health, because he knows, even as an sickly old man, Isshin is still the only thing that scares the interior ministry enough to keep them at bay, and as soon as he dies, he either brings him back to life or the ministry will attack and they will lose the battle, and this much is hinted by the aprehention shown by the Ashina Samurai when you eavesdrop on their conversations and later confirmed by the fact that as soon as Isshin does in fact die, the ministry army attacks Ashina castle and all hell breaks lose. Isshin also never got the ability to perform lightning of tomoe, he just grabs random lightning bolts from the thunderstorm and chucks them at you. The Glock saint is just built like that💀

Honestly watching you struggle so much at the beginning only to completely dominate Isshin by the end was a real treat. Well done, Sekiro. Hesitation is defeat!

About the mikiri not working... it's always the same thing: too early. The game wants to give enough warning with its kanji, but the player wants to react instantly, and those don't combine well.

With Genichiro, the thrust following the jumping overhead has such a odd delay it took a few attempts to get that specific counter down.

I think the problem is with one of the game's tutorials which states that you need to hold forward while pressing the dodge button, which is not the case. You can stand perfectly still and just tap the B or square button (timed correctly, of course). Some people may have a wonky analog stick or accidentally tilt it to the side, causing the mikiri counter to fail.

Isshin is ridiculous on that first playthrough. Congratulations on beating him no matter how many attempts and how many hours it took. Owl Father and Demon of Hatred should now be a breeze on the second playthrough.

Owl Father and DoH are never a breeze. Well, maybe on playthrough 2. I farmed the Glock Saint so many times to reach 99 attack power that I'm back on struggling more with them, I guess it has come full circle. I beat them as part of Mortal Journey, which gave me enough confidence to blitz NG+9 (playthrough 10) with no charm+bell. Mortal Journey is such an insane challenge, it was awesome to finally beat it. With no charm+bell I can only defeat 2 bosses though, NG+ is one thing but to first try 17 bosses in a row...

Respect for completing the game. I've literally seen some KZreadrs give up but you did it, so well done! You pretty much became an expert at this game by the end.

If you cure the dragon rot and talk to the merchant at the dilapidated temple, he’ll tell you where the sculptor went! You should definitely try to find him! I loved watching you play this game and can’t wait to see what you play next 💕

16:22 Yes, the NPCs tell you. Old ladies beg for rice and when you give it to them they tell you how to find the snakes. Rice does some other cool story stuff as well.

I spent six hours fighting Isshin the first time, only Malenia comes close. Isshin did become easier on the second playthrough for me, but man that guy is a piece of work.

I didn’t count how many tries it took me to defeat him. I think it was well over 300. If I could bottle the rush I felt when I finally did it, I could cure worldwide depression.

God, I love your playthroughs of difficult games. Never change Emma. I hate to inform you and maybe other players have mentioned this but you missed the true daddy owl fight. There's a bit of a process to getting it that requires meeting Emma at different locations and using the buddha statue to go back to the Hirata estate where you fought Lady Butterfly. It's probably the most difficult fight of the game but absolutely incredible.

Only because it doesn't go straight to Isshin after the first attempt. I usually just tanto, yashiriku, mortal draw straight through him to get back to gramps, It's also how I start Demon of Hatred every time.

Congratulations, pretty sure beating this game is a pivotal point in any game loving persons life, we need Sekiro 2

No boss has handed me my ass like Isshin did. Literally HALF my total playtime on my blind playthrough was trying to beat him. And then when I finally beat him, I sat there and thought for a full minute on whether I'd actually like to kill him or if I'd rather reset at the last moment so I could fight him more. Isshin's a masterpiece, but god damn does he FORCE you to git gud. When I came back to Sekiro earlier this year I had much less trouble with him (and the rest of the game) because I'd been through his training camp. Hesitation is defeat indeed.

Thanks for this, I just realized that Genichiro "cursed" new Isshin by imposing his will upon him to use the Dragon Blood to save Ashina, that could be one of the many reasons he says well done.

I know it’s kinda too late, but if you want to try the inner bosses, by tapping deflect the timing is much tighter. So tapping it once before it lands it’s much easier

I think you don't get dropped into NG+ right away right? So you can still do the optional stuff if you want? (As fo which games are next - Might I recommend Hollow Knight, CONTROL, Half-Life 1/2 (or 1's remake 'Black Mesa'), or DS3? (DS2 is fine but somewhat compromised). Appreciate you Emma! x

I know you probably have finished the game now, but about the Mikiri Counter. You CANNOT be pressing the directional stick when trying to Mikiri. JUST press circle, easy as that. Do not try to move around and then do it, because it will not work. Great job though! Very fun to watch you discover this incredible game.

Isshin is super fucking fun to fight when you get everything down. its still challenging. i last left off a while back on ng+ no kuro charm with demon bell activated and this final boss is insane. you have to be perfect in your deflects!

Absolutely GOAT of all bosses in video games

After a couple trys , i randomly when he was transitioning to phase 2 ,right before he gets his spear. i would throw fireworks ,cross slash repeat till i ran out of emblems. His life bar would be less than half. a little cheap but i still had to fight him the rest of the time 😂. this fight did get me frustrated at times .

I'm sorry Emma but I've been waiting for this beatdown by gigachad Isshin with anticipation. Lol, but in all seriousness huge props on the effort, how many hours collectively do you think it took you? also i hope everything turned out ok with the family emergency.

There's really no other boss for me. Beating The Sword Saint Isshin himself is really it. So many feelings at once

my first souls game was sekiro let me tell you it was hard but not that hard, alot of the early game bosses are easy to beat or can be tricked but then i came face to face with genichiro and it took me 4 hours to get past the first two fases and another 2 to beat him. after that i went to the tropie list and saw that i was only just beginning after that every boss gave me a run for my money but not a single one was as big of a wall as genichiro was, until i got to the end game let me tell you owl father demon of hatred and isshin are the hardest boss incounters i ever had it took my 132 tries to beat isshin and it took me over 10 hours and now when i come back to the game after beating all souls games i can 1 shot him. it feels so good to see how much i have grown as a gamer and isshin will for ever be my fav fromsoftware boss i feel like a real master every time i beat him, no easy tricks no summons just me and my parry's

Emma only becomes a boss if you yourself choose the evil path

I think Isshin is the best boss in gaming history its like a master who's thrilling for a duel against an enthusiast, and the music kind of enhance that feeling as well. He is very passive, seeking the right moment to hit you the hardest and is ready to punish every kind of mistake that you commit. When i finally mastered this fight it felt so great to be the calm and serene one waiting for him to make a mistake and punishe every single one of them Every now and then i come back to the game just to fight him, I have 120+hrs in this game and i think it's safe to say at least 50 of them are me just fighting Isshin for fun.
