It's usually not that effective, because in this type of excercises the opponent is not really going to shoot. An effective way to test this is with protection and airsoft guns using paintballs that leave a mark of impact. That way the opponent's real objective is to shoot you if you represent a threat. There are videos testing this the same way, in most cases, you cannot move faster than the reflexes and the finger of another person pulling the trigger. A very important tip when it comes to this type of techniques, is to move the body out of the way of the gun, then proceed with the rest of the technique, all in one single move. Of course all this has to be done in fractions of a second and it's best if the opponent has a blink of distraction. At first look, the techniques look exactly the same, but when checking in slow motion, the only ones that were succesful were the ones that moved their bodies out of the way fractions of a second before making physical contact with the opponent. Remember that the main objective is not to take the gun, nor to hold the opponent's arm, nor make him aim the gun at anything else. The main objective is to move your body out of the way of that gun as fast as possible, in just fractions of a sec while you keep performing the rest of the technique.
