Israel's genocide in Gaza exposes the racism of the international system | Witnessing Palestine

As the International Court of Justice prepares to hear South Africa's petition accusing Israel of genocide, Frank Barat talks to Francesca Albanese and Susan Abulhawa about the role Israel's genocidal war on Gaza plays in the global systems of diplomacy, economics, and culture. The outcome of this shocking destruction of a civilian population will have implications for the entire world. Is Palestinian resistance to the Israeli occupation and apartheid really the only thing standing in between a world governed by laws and one subject to the whims of those with money and weapons?
Francesca Albanese is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967. She is an Affiliate Scholar at the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University, and a Senior Advisor on Migration and Forced Displacement for the think tank Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD), where she co-founded the Global Network on the Question of Palestine (GNQP), a coalition of renowned professional and scholars engaged in/on Israel/Palestine.
Susan Abulhawa is a Palestinian-American writer and political activist. She is the author of Mornings in Jenin-translated into thirty languages-and The Blue Between Sky and Water. Born to refugees of the Six Day War of 1967, she moved to the United States as a teenager, graduated in biomedical science, and established a career in medical science. She is the Executive Director of the Palestine Writes Literary Festival.

Israel were very quick to call South Africa anti-semitic when they filed the case at the ICJ. Imagine the onslaught had it been filed by an Arab State - they would have been labelled an 'anti-semitic, jihadist state intent on destroying the West' - complete nonsense of course but there's no doubt in my mind that trope would have been readily swallowed by the many, many Islamaphobes in the West.

nation states that are wholly complicit in the ongoing genocide of their own indigenous populations have a vested interest in turning a blind eye. calling out another countries genocide would inevitably put the light on their own active genocide. as a canadian genocide victim, i can confirm this first hand. the worst part? all i got for my govt having me raped and tortured was effectively the price of a cup of coffee a day, and that coffee is getting cheaper and cheaper every day because my link to my people and culture is permanently severed thanks to my abject worthlessness as a disabled person leaving me waiting to die in legislated poverty.

How will it affect the US' standing in the world after (not if) ICJ rules there is a genocide going on - and that it needs to stop, AND that the US continues to block all resolutions calling for cease fire? How much will it expedite the multipolar world order, and minimize the role of the west? This court hearing and coming ruling is fork in the road, which leads to a different direction for the west and the rest.

What I’d appreciate when talking about violence on Palestinian people is that you could always mention at least one other group of people who have suffered through this right extremism of white supremist violence. For example, the Indigenous Indians in America, the Aborigines in Australia, the enslaved in America, and even the indigenous in South America and Canada, and so many more. . . IF YOU WANT TO UNITE PEOPLE ACROSS THE GLOBE. And not every single one but at least mention two when you speak, and rotate them, don’t do the same ones over and over. Go back in history if you have to. The Opium Wars in China by the British for example.

When this is settled(with a beautiful vision of Palestinian statehood, sovereignty, safety and security always in my mind now), a concerted effort to regain the lost cultural history and restore Palestinian culture for the children as quickly as possible needs to be made. My thoughts, qualified, I am no psychologist; Put them on a path of restoration and recovery of the good, rather than see them devolve into the pain and resentment of what’s been done to them. When it comes they will need to learn that the time for anger and fighting is done.

22:16 I have thought about this a lot and it seems to me that an enormous number of citizens would need to have a full understanding of the essential problem of human ego born of thought. It wants security but always wants a security that does not exist and out of this it begins to crystallize a Supremacist ideology taking on many forms…religious, nationalist, etc. This like a drug for the ego which can appear so innocuous. The taming of human ego means not just equality among humans but a recognition of all Life on the planet as valid and ESSENTIAL. The web of life can not function as a healthily if one species imagines itself to be supreme, important or solely sacred. IF this understanding becomes widespread then a change of justice in the world would follow. Without it (because this has no meaning if it is imposed) a reformation will end up being a new egoistic perversion of justice. Therefore, we must continue the dialogues, the exposing of this uniquely human cancerous thought and use these extreme examples of egoistic conflict (Zionism) to learn about ourselves. We ARE the world. Thank you all for this conversation. I have been listening intensely and consistently for some time and it has helped me to have incites and epiphanies. So many helped me to understand the history of Gaza and I am blessed to support them in their recovery.❤️‍🩹 What a confluence of human history this is… Where will we go from here???

It’s not really about “human ego,” it’s about childhood trauma. People who were raised in love and respect will find it easy to love and respect others later on. But those who were born to over-controlling, abusive parents will have a drive to later treat others the same way they were treated by their parents. It’s really about parenting, not some vague, generalized ideas about “ego.”

For all her moral stances, F. Albanese is the typical western leftist who cannot fathom liberation struggle through arms. These people will look for "excuses", such as "violence being a response to violence", which in itself is not wrong, but in this case tends to delegitimise arm struggle which is allowed by international law. It is in a sense a reversal of Frantz Fanon's understanding of liberation struggle as a response to brutal colonisation and imperialism. It will be enlightening to challenge otherwise well meaning people like her in that aspect. In a sense, and as many anti-imperial and liberation scholars (like Lakota scholar Nick Estes in the US) have said, delegitimising arm struggle is to accept the colonised only as good victims, and never when they stand up through their own means. This has produced the NGO-industrial complex, as many have said. Principled anti-imperialists, particularly those "on the other side of imperialism (i.e., in the West) should condone any means the colonised use to free themselves. Anything short of that is playing within the hands of the imperialists.

Bazaar conversation...do you mean haggling? I'm not at that part of the video yet, apparently.

It’s absurd. The more Israel did to live peacefully along Palestine (gaza withdrawal, granting work visas, treating Palestinians in Israeli hospitals etc…), the more violent Humus became towards Israel. It shows they aren’t interested in peace.

Francesca in 100% of the definition “The wrong woman at the wrong time at the wrong place” and we should add the wrong ideology. She made so much damage in her approach instead of helping.
