In the past two years, thousands of French Jewish people have emigrated to Israel, a phenomenon known as Aliyah. Israeli authorities invest considerable resources in welcoming these newcomers and helping them settle into their new homeland. But adapting to their new life is not always easy. Our correspondent Cyril Payen reports from Jerusalem.

I remember years ago Russian physicists swept streets in Tel Aviv to make a living. Avigdor Lieberman's first job after making aliyah was as a baggage handler for El Al; now he is Minister of Defense. Immigration has never been easy.

Intégration is not something you learn in 5-10 years, Israël needs to learn from other countries that have been receiving immigrants (UK, Sweden, France, USA...) Israel is not helping them get integrated easily, you can't sell someone a dream then when you migrate and reach destination, you are chocked to find that you may need to clean streets when you are an engineer/architect Those people can be integrated with the help of Israeli people, it requires some efforts from them (Israeli) but it will take less time if they (Israeli) allow them (migrants) in, guide them... than if they (migrants) work with their little strength by themselves , being a migrant is very tough, most of the time the second generation is the one that makes it. You need to have migrated yourself to understand how they feel.

Why did they even considered moving to the Middle East? If they are sick and tired of France/Europe, they could've chose somewhere more civilized like Australia or New Zealand to migrate to.

The French current state of affairs have conditioned them into accepting their identity more. Its this process of (a short term) forced reality check that gets people thinking about being Jewish. But these people do not come from a religious background, so even though France as a threatening place has made them make Aliyah, all it did was confuse them even further. It seems to me that they made Aliyah on the basis of moral panic. Hence the prolonged conditioning process of becoming more Jewish never took place. So, they became victims of their own outdated lifestyle..
