The IDF didn’t stand-down, it was defeated in battle, most of the Israelis killed and captured on Oct7 were Israeli military and security personnel, and the reason the IDF waited 6 hours before counter-attacking was because Hamas fighters destroyed the command&control centre and left IDF forces blind.

It also ignored reports from IDF observers, who signaled that an enemy action appeared imminent. The top brass were assembled to discuss possible measures, in the evening of 6 October, but decided to reconvene the next day. The theory is that Netanyahu and the IDF needed a military disaster of shocking proportions, to justify an ethnic cleansing and land-grab operation, without which the public might not endorse anything further than a retaliatory strike.

Palestinians must have their own state free from the oppressors and free to do what they want for their wellbeing.

In 1948 there should have been one state in which all inhabitants of the area would be allowed to live. Jews could have assimilated with the existing local population (as many already did as they were already there) or they could have bought their way in (which many also did). Together they could have formed a unity government. On a similar basis as in Lebanon. Unfortunately the British and later the Western dominated UN chose to reward the Jewish population (driven by a collective feeling of guilt and/or debt) with a state, kicking out the local population which lived there for ages and told them, while giving them the political status of"Palestinians", and told hem to move to an area where they were supposed to be living from then on. (Italy could relate a bit to the case of Istria). Combined with a religious supremacist ideology (zionism) and a big dose of Jewish-American and European funding the Jews slowly strangled the idea of a state for the Palestinians based on religious and ethnic grounds. Oct.7 was not the start of the conflict. The conflict was already On, Oct. 7 was a strike against israel. The conflict got stronger and into war and Genocide.
