Israel at War | ClubGPF Preview with George Friedman and Ambassador Ronald E. Neumann

Over three weeks after Hamas’ unprecedented Oct. 7 attack on Israel shocked the world, there are still so many questions that need to be answered. In our recent ClubGPF discussion, George Friedman was joined by special guest Ambassador Ronald E. Neumann to explain what we know (and what we do not yet know) about where things stand with the conflict.

How is it possible to forget that Palestinians are human beings whose ancestors were expelled from their land in refugee camps where they would remain? These are human beings whom Israel dispossessed and expelled. Israel conquered them again in their land of refuge and then turned them into animals in a cage. Though what Hamas did is inhuman and unforgivable, and it must be condemned. Nonetheless, people should bear in mind that there is a background that does not justify what Hamas has done but it does explain it, and it's important to keep that background in mind.

That is an Arab claim. Israeli officials claim that Arab leaders told the Palestinians to leave so they could more easily kill all the Israelis during the 1948 war or a refusal to live in peace with Israel. The truth is likely somewhere in between. Many likely did leave in support of the Arab invasion of Israel, and many where likely driven out by Israelis during the conflict. The fact that around one quarter of the current Israeli population is Palestinians does speak some truth to the idea that it was not an official policy on Israel's part to expell the Palestinians, but that would not have stopped retribution from people who had just endured the holocaust and listening to another group speaking of their complete extermination.
