Israel at 75 - A nation in domestic crisis | DW Documentary

The state of Israel is in political turmoil as it marks its 75th anniversary. While there is still no end in sight to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, Israeli society itself is more divided than ever before.
The founding of the Jewish state was a dream come true for Jews around the world. It came just a few years after the genocide of the Holocaust and 2,000 years after the destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple and the exile from Israel.
On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion read out the Israeli Declaration of Independence in a small building in the center of Tel Aviv. Ever since its foundation, Israel has had a checkered history. As well as ongoing conflict with the Palestinians, it has seen poverty and hardship, but also economic prosperity and social advances over the past 75 years. In addition, Israel enjoys political and military superiority in the region. At the same time, the state is now going through its deepest-ever domestic crisis. Israel is socially, politically and religiously polarized.
One reason for that are the plans put forward by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing religiously conservative government. The reforms are designed to reduce the power of the Supreme Court. Critics regard the move as an assault on democracy and an attempt to undermine the independence of the judiciary. For months now, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have been protesting against the proposals.
In his documentary, ZDF correspondent Michael Bewerunge investigates what has become of the aspirations of the nation’s founders and how people today are living the Jewish dream.

    That one American dude I saw in a clip talking with a Palestinian family being displaced who had the confident audacity to tell them "If I don't take it, someone else will" told me everything I needed to know about the Israeli government. They've deliberately fostered an aura of privilege based on being a member of the Jewish religion to the point where people don't even bat an eye and are completely out in the open over outright genocidal type behaviors. It's been going on so long that it's on open secret and totally ingrained in the psyches of the ones who feel that way regardless of the country they're living in.

    Thank you DW for this great documentary, very well put and very truthful. My husband used to serve in the IDF as medic (it's either that, or jail). During class in which they were instructed what do to in case of settelers-Palestinian conflict/violence, he asked: "What are the regulations in case it's the Jewish setteler who is aggresive and attacks the Palestinian? Am I'm allowed to warn-shoot?" The whole class started attacking him, how can he shoot a fellow Jew? (My husband is not Jewish mind you, the Rabbi didn't allow him to convert). He got so pissed off at the unfairness and descrimination against the Palesinians, since then he refuses to serve and trying to get discharged. Until the notion that it doesn't matter if you're Jewish or Palestinian, you're still a HUMAN beign and deserve the same rights as everyone, until this will be in the heads and hearts of everyone in Israel, I don't believe the conflict will ever end. Unfortunatly, with the rise of the ultra-right-nationalist parties in Israel, it's just getting worse for all the people who still have their critical thinking intact. And as someone who used to live in a settelment in the West Bank, I HATE those settelers.

    This is not too dissimilar to how Britain artificially divided up its colonized British India post WW2 into two religiously differing partitions, Hindu majority India and Muslim majority Pakistan, with a little piece of land in the middle left to be fought over until the early 21st century. Just like they decided as colonizer or Palestine they had the right to divy it up and play people against people. The scars of colonization are many around the globe. Even Vietnam probably happened because of kowtowing to a colonizer grasping for its last bits of power. Healing is needed.

    As a Jew, I must agree with the strict critique that the Jewish people are being faced with. We do contain many problems, and foremost is in our interaction with the broader world. There is an aloofness to the normal dynamics between ourselves and others and there needs to be a rectification. We cannot assert ourselves by using the new culture to our advantage, for instance, victimhood. We must interact by the normal social rules whether it be in business or in any other other environment. We must not 'collude' together in our dealings with the world and must take each person at their own respective value. For our own identity we can do as we see fit and enjoy our traditions and customs appropriately. However, when in interaction outside of that identity, we must let go of the identity and treat Jews and gentiles with the same regard. And yes, as one commenter had said bluntly, they [the jewish people] have always asserted their suffering without explaining what was their part in the violence. And surely we have avoided that part of the equation for many centuries. This is something that we must fix, since even if we got the bitter end of any engagement, we surely weren't taking those dynamics seriously enough. That being said, I would request of those in critique of Jewishness, to study their own motives within their views. I too will take account for the problems of my identity. Like if you agree.

    For context, the Haredi (Ultra-Orthodox) man speaking at 12:45, is a member of a specific group within Ultra-Orthodoxy, one of the few, who claim "try to take nothing from the state." As a whole, the Ultra-Orthodox sector gets the largest amount of social welfare and benefits from the state, while having low economic contribution, less than 50% of the men in the community work, practically no military or national service, all funded by the taxpayers. This year alone, Netanyahu's coalition allocated over $2 Billion for their yeshivas and kollels (religious schools for children and married men alike), as well as massive budgets for the celebration of days commemorating renowned rabbis. This is the largest budget they've received to date, while countless other sectors are miserably underfunded. A majority have no problem taking from the state, from people like me, even though they spite the state. This is not to say that I disagree with funding schools, nor do I disagree with a welfare state that protects it's citizens, I disagree with the massive unbalance and unfairness of how this is distributed vs. how it's contributed to.

    I live in Israel. This video is clearly not objective. In addition the video contains embarrassing factual errors. For example, it is said at the end of the video that the government plans to pass a law according to which it will be able to override over any ruling of the supreme court (overcoming clause). And another law that would give the coalition a majority. But *It's bullshit*. Regarding the override clause, 8 months ago the government suggested that the government could overcome the Supreme Court's verdict of canceling laws if that verdict were not accepted unanimously. However, this offer was dropped from the proposal a few months ago and is no longer part of the government's planned reform. Regarding the selection of judges, according to the updated proposal, the government wants to change the composition of the committee for selecting judges so that the coalition and the opposition have an equal share. No one will have a majority and they will have to compromise. Different from the absurd situation today where the judges in Israel choose themselves (there is no normal country in the world where this is the case). By the way, in Germany, France and most European countries the coalition has a majority. Most of the video shows extreme and delusional fringes that do not represent Israel. For example, the ultra-orthodox who spoke are radically different from the average ultra-Orthodox you will meet in Israel

    Yeah I'm glad to see there's pushback from within israel, but how many of these people are just protesting the changes that will now inconvenience them, after a lifetime of reaping the rewards that the national religious agenda has provided? They seem to be having a pretty good time at the beach while the zealots expand the territory. Don't forget, military service is mandatory, so literally everyone has either directly or indirectly participated and supported that agenda.

  • @talkowalski6930

    @talkowalski6930

    @@soth897 I liked your comment so I'll respond to it. Being a part of the IDF is mandatory since Israel has been attacked many times, and will probably be again in the future, by other countries. I agree it's a shame soldier have to do the Government's sometimes questionable decisions, but overall the its a net good to serve. Also, of course people are "fighting for their rights now, when it causes an inconvenience to them", I think that's always the case, in every country. Finally, I am not sure which rewards the national religious agenda has provided. Israel was built on atheistic values by non-believers, but the amount of religious people grew due to immigration and well... high birth rates. The "religious agenda" therefor, is hardly a national one, and most surly wasn't until the last election, which even then, these maniacs are only getting what they want, since Bibi will give them anything for them to support him at his weakest. We need better education for these populations, like we should support better education for the Palestinians, then perhaps it will be easier to think of the other side as people and not an enemy. Most Israelis want piece, most don't want anything to do with is happening politically to them and to the Palestinians, and most will give back the west bank gladly.

    My grandfather left Budapest after the II. WW at the age of 16 and joined the british Army in Palestine. He also stole ammunition for Irgun, Stern and Hagana and supported them by other means too. They fought to establish the independent jewish state. He married a hungarian women and had a son, whom he left in Haifa in 1955 after he returned to Budapest, Hungary. My uncle had a wife and two children who lived in Tel Aviv, but now the whole family is preparing to leave their country. After the election they became too desperate and took part in the demonstrations. Beside that a criminal is leading their country, their conflict is not only with the government but those supporters of the government, like ortodox religious persons, who do not contribute (not paying taxes, refusing military training) only taking benefits (healthcare, voting) while they are also provoking conflicts. After living for like 70 years in a country of constant conflicts you get tired of it specially when you see that the biggest domestic crisis is caused by religion, nationalism and extremism between jews itself. I think many, many israelies think the same as my uncle and as some people in this video which will cause an emigration wave from Israel. For this reason this become a very sad 75th birthday for Israel.

    @@teec. Zionism itself is an extremely unethical ideology, and the conflict is a direct result of Zionist ideology unfolding, so ultimately, Israel should not have been established to begin with. Since it's here, an exist explicitly under law as an ethno-state for Jewish people, the only real solution is to entirely dismantle it, and in fact dismantle every part of the two-state solution entirely. A new secular state built on equal rights ad representation must be built from the ground up, but that's not gonna happen without a bunch of bloodshed at this point.
