My late father was a US Coast Guardsman stationed in New London.. he spent many many nights on this rock .. even on his deathbed he shared stories of the strange things that happened while on duty. Thanks for this !!
That’s our lighthouse in Connecticut! I’ve been fascinated by it since I was a kid-it’s beautiful and unique.

Early 304 maybe, had to be in the streets, who knows
Back in 2002 our local Ham Radio club, RASON (Radio Amateur Society Of Norwich) received permission and set up a bunch of Ham radios, mounted and hung antennas to the rails, and spent the weekend ‘Activating’ this lighthouse. The only strange noise we heard was finally attributed, after exhaustive investigation to one of our members, WA4VWV loud snoring reverberating through all of the rooms😀. A grand time was had by all that weekend.
This is the best looking lighthouse I’ve ever seen. I would make a great Airbnb
Quintessential New England: Traditional architecture, spooky location, a death, and a poem. Lovely story.
I helped automate this light in the late 80's. Lots of stories from the crew at the time, odd occurrences. Sounds, doors opening and closing on their own etc.
I had the absolute pleasure to stay there for a week. It was heaven on earth except for the ghosts.
I am from CT, worked in New London and never knew the history behind the structure I viewed for years. Lighthouses have always been a charm for me being from New England. Thanks!

@@IntriguedLioness. The NC lighthouses are interesting also, especially those on the Outer Banks. Very beautiful but significantly different from this one. I had never seen it.
Being alone is a powerful thing,, both good and bad. Days and days have I spent seeing no one, exchanging not a word. Or seeing someone and a wave in passing. Meeting someone briefly, a glad exchange of words, and then moving on yet again. The extreme yearning for a special someone to share this with, and the palpable envy when meeting someone who is traveling with their special someone. Being alone is a powerful thing,, both good and bad. I know.

Loneliness sometimes brings writer fabric.. Like you..
Having pain in my knees I spend almost all of my time inside my house, computer and books and a lot of cofé and sandwiches. I could easily shift to the sea view. A lighthouse is kind of a dream. Yes I do other things that including others, but I can kind of take care of myself. So much to read and learn there is. A wife can be a dream but I can see how a world of one house only can be challenging. And face it, many of us live alone in a city full of people anyway.
Now a days it would make a very interesting b&b! It would not be as isolated or lonely..
This is the first lighthouse you see when leaving subbase Groton. And you know you are home when you are coming back from sea. It was always a heartwarming feeling to see this little light house known by submarinets as point Alpha on the charts.

For a long time, back 50 years or so, there was a painted target on the foundation facing the river that was used for adjusting submarine periscopes. It’s no longer there now.
When I was a kid (50 years ago), I went boating and fishing out by this lighthouse off the coast of New London, CT.
i served on two lightships and two lighthouses while i was in the US Coast Guard and not once did i ever see or hear loud noises, and never did i ever see any ghosts or anything strange out at those two lighthouses. it's like every lighthouse has some kind of strange something or other going on. it make's for some good stories.
They should never have given the responsibility to one person or family. They should have traded out duties on a weekly or monthly bases with rotating families.
Thanks ... For more than sixty years, I was fortunate to have viewed The Ledge Light, from my home in New London.
I LOVE, LOVE light house stories! I have a couple of books on light houses and most all of them have very interesting stories. MORE please!!!❤️👍

very pretty lighthouse, she has style and class.
I’ve lived in Groton and New London my whole life. My son used to LOVE this lighthouse and would always talk about Ernie. I’ll have to show him this. He’s almost 15 now and he hasn’t talked about Ernie in years, I hope this brings back the memories for him. He would always ask what I thought Ernie was doing on holidays and stuff, like this distant relative he never met, he just became part of his childhood. I believe you could actually take board rides to the lighthouse to see it. I’m not sure if that has changed since Covid though. Hopefully it has restarted and some people can get close this summer.

Nearly any of the lighthouses that had successful stays of time had one thing in common, ground to walk upon outside. This one has none, you are confined to a concrete island, which bares no life, and as such you are disconnected from it.
I could man it no problem even with ghosts its more safe & friendly then most major cities these days...
Such a unique & fascinating story!!! I don't know if the lighthouse is haunted or not, but it makes for an amazing story!!! 👍👍🙂
Might be fun to stay there a short time, but would get tired of it soon unless I could go to shore often. Not even a place to go for a walk. Wonder if the fishing was good? Might be a good place to rent out for vacationers.
I've tried to visit every lighthouse in California. Of course, they were on the coast, so not nearly as isolated as poor Ernie's post.
Saw this on an episode of Ghost Hunters. One of the best episodes. Appears to be haunted for sure.
This beauty with Old Saybrook's Breakwater and New Haven's Five Mile Point are my favorites on the Connecticut Shoreline ⚓️🌊🏝

Cool place 😎
im an introvert, that gets exahusted by conversation, lighthouse keeper is a job i have thought about many times. i would love to do a 6 month stint on one, though one in my own country
As a kid, my school used to take us on school field trips around the estuary that surrounds the CT coast and Long Island. We passed by this lighthouse quite a bit on our way out to the sound. There were so many ghost stories about this lighthouse and I always felt a sense of eeriness every time our boat went passed it. I can see how it would drive anyone crazy to have to live all the way out there in complete isolation. There was no Ernie if you look at the list of lighthouse keepers. I think this story came from psychics years ago.

So, the runaway wife or ship's captain relayed this story to others or what? Did the lighthouse keeper leave a note saying he was going to jump from the top of the lighthouse?
I grew up on the Pequot and ocean beach in New London, my birth home and always admired the little house in the water!😍

I have a terrible sinus infection rn, time to binge watch my favorite channel, Thank you for your awesome and interesting videos!
Sign me up! I'd take the keeper's job!
Gorgeous, yes! But live there? No way!
When I was in the Coast Guard, I was asked to take Elizabeth Dole, Wife of Senator Bob Dole and then Secretary of Transportation, out to New London Ledge Light for a tour. She was most interested in the history of Ernie, the ghost. Ledge light is not very isolated, being about 1 mile from the mouth of the Thames river and close to Ocean Beach. The crews that manned the light enjoyed checking out the ladies on the beach with binoculars. It was one of the last lighthouses to be automated, because it protected the main ship channel into New London via which many Submarines and other naval vessels navigated.
"Surrounded by rough waters"?!? Lol...sometimes. But there are plenty of calm water days, too, where the missus could have took a dinghy over to the shore and visit with friends. I grew up my entire childhood here and spent countless times at Eastern Point watching my dad's sub come and go. The waters are seldom rough.
Nice video. I loved in New London and Groton Ct.most of my life and was lucky enough to visit that light house about 30 years ago. It was a cold, hard and un-welcoming house.Scary to be in, no place to live in. Leo.
Great story, it reminded me of the movie “ The Shining “ 😯

An Anchor Steam would be an appropriate "brew."
Cool story, but I guess isolation was a factor for all lighthouse keepers in past days. The automation is certainly an improvement.
I would quite happily live there. Oh to be away from people.

That one will not be coming back. It's still an extreme challenge to land a boat there. The Government has declared the rock it's on to be off-limits to everyone; apparently the light will just be allowed to crumble and wash into the seas...
I doubt the light house keeper jumped off the roof. The base of the light house is too great for him to have cleared in the fall. Enjoyed the story. Its funny( or not) how many light houses have tragic stories attached to them.
@chrisc6857

I don't know, on the one hand, looking at it, I'd say he could have made it with a running start. On the other hand, if he just wanted to drown himself he wouldn't have needed to go to the roof, and if he wanted a sure sudden impact death he would've just stepped off the roof and fell to the concrete instead of trying to reach the water. So yeah, it doesn't quite add up in any direction. Particularly given that, according to my (admittedly limited) research the list of lighthouse keepers does not include an "Ernie."

@@chrisc6857 Hi Chris, thank you for your reply. I think most Lighthouse stories get over romanised. I think lonely light house keepers probably drink too much. I think stumbling off the edge of the docking area was probably this unlucky keepers end. I think the Fog horn wold do me in!
Movie idea: couple of keepers housed in a lighthouse when the zombie apocalypse occurs...
Now this was good because it’s a totally different type of house.
There should’ve been a crew of 8 members to stay there, and take turns where 4 would go inland and get supplies to bring back to the lighthouse. Then the next crew of 4 could even go inland bringing a selective few to train and let 4 other members go back and forth but always making sure some were minding the lighthouse.

If this were something like forestry lookouts where you sign up to work for a season, then go back to your old life, I'd probably give being a lighthouse keeper a shot. Especially if it was one of those things where I could still work from home and do the lighthouse keeper thing as like a side gig. I can't imagine it requires a ton of daily work. Not now that everything is electric anyway. As for a long-term thing, I suppose that would depend on the time off policy. If I wanted to go on vacation for a week, who would man the lighthouse, that sort of thing.
Would love to stay there ❤❤❤❤❤
I could finally have time to write!!😅😉
Living there would suit me as long as I had a boat.
Not to mention Day of the Triffids and The Fog☠️
Sort of like a mini alcatraz.

I wonder whether you could get cell or Internet there? When automated I guess they had to lay an electrical cable out there because no keeper to change fuel in generator.
