We loved the Isle of Wight and adored the donkey sanctuary. We adopted a lovely donkey called Trevor 🥰 - oh and the sanctuary is free to enter! But we did donate.

Okay - lived on the Island for over 30 years and it suits us. We love it here. Having said that some of the guff in this video is overcooking a sausage to try to make it look like a steak. Shanklin Chine is an overpriced nonsense of a tourist attraction. I speak a little German and I recently heard a German family complaining bitterly about the value of the so called attraction. This film is a sales blurb and little else. There is nothing grand about any of the Island attractions (well maybe Osborne House can be considered "Grand". The jewel in the crown is the Island itself, what nature has given us is just stunning. Forget what you have to pay to get into (the purpose of the film is to promote such) get lost on the footpaths/coast trail and just look at what surrounds you. Everything man made on the island is merely a supporting feature - the star of the show is the Island itself. We go to Osborne House to just walk around and enjoy a cuppa or an icecream. It's lovely to use as an excuse for a walk, likewise Carisbrooke Castle, interesting historically but a great place to go for a walk in good or foul weather after a day at work and a couple of pubs closeby for a half decent meal and a drink if you require it. Yarmouth Castle - we've been a couple of times but the star of that show is the little town itself and a walk out and back to Fort Victoria or along the old railway track toward freshwater and back - great little cafes at both ends of the walk, In Freshwater at the old station at Fort Victoria itself and at Gossips in Yarmouth. There is an excellent walk to be enjoyed from the Needles pleasure park out to the Needles battery and up over the nuclear test site and back - especially if there's a storm hitting or brewing - just breathtaking and awesome no matter how cold or wet you become as a result - it never looks the same way twice. Just as nice but in a less dramatic way if the weather is fair to warm. Garlic Farm is a good facilitiy to have even though over priced - hardly a tourist attraction though. The food there has never disappointed however. Godshill is a pretty (very pretty) but overly touristic spot with several good pubs/watering holes/cafes and the walk up to the church around it and back down is well worth the effort - lovely spot. Don't waste any time on Sandown - the town is a time warp, half wrecked/closed dump of a disgrace as a town which is a shame because the beach stretching out toward Yaverland and Culver Down is a great place to lose an afternoon whether sunny or stormy. The walk up to Culver Down is of medium difficulty only and the views from the old fort and the battery are as good as it gets when looking out over water. Again the storms when viewed from there are a thrill too. Shanklin is a bit of a nothing shopping couple of streets which has some glorious little spots in the old town and the outlying areas for walking especially. Newport is a mixed bag - what could be a quite attractive little Georgian town is blighted by the closed down canker of modern British towns and a local council devoid of imagination/flair/ambition/desire to do anything other than meet and do nothing it seems. Apart from increase car parking charges - they can act pretty decisively when there's a option to put them up (seems every couple of months another area becomes a part of the parking Nazis regime - seems the only part which operates efficiently. Just a local whine - echoed in towns the length and breadth of the country no doubt. Driving is a joy on most of the Island though with notable frustrations on occasions approaching Newport. The Military Road and back via the middle road is an absolute joy for bikers/trikers/scooterists/vintage or classic car clubs. I'd recommend that route going both directions if you would wish to go back and repeat the experience. May even, one day be a part of the oft spoken about yet never successful IOW road racing spectacle - we live in hope of someone one day recognizing what a spectacle/thrill (and yes money spinner) that truly could be, if handled correctly and local government keeps out of it. Would we wish to move anywhere else - Nope! Is it Shangri-la - Nope, nowhere is but it's about as close it gets and we have the cities of Bournemouth/Southampton/Portsmouth easily accessible, Brighton not a million miles away. Easy day trips to Salisbury/Winchester/Chichester/Guildford/Dorchester by bus, car or rail and London only a couple of hours away if the really big city calls. Bath/Bristol/Cardiff also reasonably accessible - what's not to like eh!? A wonderful place to visit, live and work, to raise kids (thought they will probably want to leave once they've got their education in order to broaden their horizons/spread their wings) and a nice spot to retire to - though it's getting more and more congested as more come here to die - the local kids used to call it God's waiting room (not sure if they still view it that way) The population is rising and at times it borders congested.

Yeah - stretches incredulity doesn't it? Unless you lived here you'd probaly never visit it twice, come to think of it - I've lived here for 32 years and only over been in twice no matter how much we like just strolling around Yarmouth itself and out along the old rail line or to Ft Victoria and beyond to the other forts.
