Isle of Man: There is more to the Isle of Man than a Bike Race!

Think of the Isle of Man and you probably think of motorcycles and the Isle of Man TT, but there is so much more to this little island in the Irish sea. Join us as we take a weekend break in the Isle of Man and show you some of our favourite things to do in a weekend!

Timestamp:-
Intro 0:00
0:32 Peel Castle goo.gl/maps/Z3CJim8amSSPV8F8A
A Viking stronghold, Peel Castle stands on St Patrick's Isle, linked to the town of Peel by a causeway. The rugged coastline and the ruins of the castle outer walls make this an interesting stop.
02:00 Niarbyl Bay goo.gl/maps/MLLEUFwf1EbMn2W16
Down a long winding lane, past the cafe and steep hill, you arrive at Niarbyl Bay.
Secluded and quaint, you suddenly feel like a fisherman from years gone by.
03:14 The Calf of Man goo.gl/maps/dwPhrqg77iPdu2Yd9
Calf of Man is a 2.50-square-kilometre island, off the southwest coast. It is separated from the Isle of Man by a narrow stretch of water called the Calf Sound.
There is a cafe and some rugged walking trails too keep you occupied, and on some days you can see the seals basking on the rocks
04:28 Cregneash goo.gl/maps/xJWH3gnwYRrqsq4R6
A small charming village with a tourist museum, seen on map above.
Home to a flock of the rare four-horned Loaghtan sheep, much of the village is made up of a living museum with the small white cottages forming the exhibits. Inside the victorian farming and fishing equipment is displayed and demonstrated.
05:31 Isle of Man Steam Railway goo.gl/maps/ddu3wvHuQPGbWuj46
Starting in Douglas and steaming east to Port Erin via Castletown this narrow gauge railway is a must do attraction. The scenery is stunning and is a superb way to spend an hour or so chugging along the countryside.
07:47 CastleTown goo.gl/maps/zh27uUWgZ6CtJS4B7
CastleTown is the former Capital of Manx, and is home to Rushen Castle. The narrow streets and fishing cottages make this a delightful place to walk around.
It also holds the annual world tinbath championships.
09:41 Ballaglass Glen goo.gl/maps/MNaK7LUhKnoW3ruRA
lovely glen to walk through, a nice wooded area with the river flowing through the middle of it with some fantastic waterfalls, and there’s a fairy house hidden along the river too. Plenty of quirks for kids too like the wizard statue along one of the paths.
11:25 Douglas
11:45 Laxey Wheel and Mine goo.gl/maps/Fptp943rjH6TLJ6z6
Built in 1854 to pump water from the attached mine, Lady Isabella as she is known is the largest surviving wheel of its kind in the world.
14:07 Manx Electric Railway goo.gl/maps/DTvTr9NLPscXgaYX8
Running from Douglas to Ramsey via Laxey this has to be the most picturesque heritage railway (tramway) I have ever been on.
Starting in Laxey and part of the Manx Electric Railway, the
14:29 Snaefell Mountain Railway
offers daily services to the summit.
15:03 Laxey Beach
17:45 Laxey to Ramsey Manx Railway
18:31 Ramsey Harbour
Town on the MANX Electric railway route.
goo.gl/maps/1fv11VrApXegEoZu5
19:22 Port Erin Fish and Chips

You are right about them living there when they were little but one of them bought houses there when they became famous (might have been Maurice). yes it was early life for bee gees. but robin Gibb had a house here. not sure if his wife still has it. I saw robin at the villa marina doing a small concert for a children's charity. he did a lovely concert but looked very thin. thinner than normal. I commented to my daughter after the concert saying he didn't look well. he died about 12months after. had the Manx flag on the back of his coffin. we now got a statue on Douglas seafront of the bee gees. looks good.

I've heard many fascinating stories about the Isle of Man all my life, but this is the first time I've seen modern pictures (my only reference was a book about the island, dated 1896) What a magic place - breathtaking to say the least. My great grandmother (Elizabeth Jane Cubbon) was born here, and her family lived in the Cubbon House for many, many generations. I only wish I could visit! Thank you for posting this video. After watching this, I am wondering why she emigrated to Ontario, Canada!

@@MemorySeekers Thank you very much for your message. I delved a bit deeper into my family history, (through Ancestry), and discovered why Elizabeth never returned to the Island she loved. She had eloped at the age of 16 and was told she "had disgraced the family" and was told never to return to the island by her father. Poor girl, and very sad for everyone, isn't it? She did keep in contact with her mother though, who came to see her after the father's death.

This is a great video of The Rock - glad you caught it on a sunny weekend! Most places pronounced correctly so 👍 however the Manx Cat isnt really elusive. I mean, I guess it is if you are looking for them on the mainland but on the Isle of Man they're inevitably rampant 😂

Hi Amy, thanks so much for your feedback, you know we didn't catch sight of one all weekend, but I guess that happens when you go looking you never find one. The weather was lovely, we were lucky and to be there on the weekend of the World Tin Bath Championship was also special! That was a surprise we didn't know happened. 😊

What a great video. I am a beginner at YouTubing but I was really impressed by the camerawork - the focus pulls, transitions, hyperlapses and pacing. The commentary was just right (although Lougtan sheep are pronounced "Lochton, not Low Town!). I am amazed at how much you where able to fit in over two days. Our family spent many happy holidays on the island just after the war and my parents retired to Colby in in the Eighties. My sister and i are retuening for a nostalgic trip down memory lane in May, taking the ferry from Liverpool and meeting up with old friends. If you go back I would recommend both Port Erin and Port St Mary, Colby Glen and a closer look at Castletown. Thanks for the memories and keep up the great work

Very pretty tour - it's one place I know just about zero about, but my ears pricked up when you mentioned FREE PARKING!! I'd really like to know about what makes the IoM unique and how it differs from England? Do they have VAT, did you notice any differences, are the holidays the same, when are the TT Races (in case you want to avoid them) - is it closer to the Channel Islands in governance (?) than England - how do you get there, and how does it compare in size, to say Jersey or the Isle of White! Do they have their own currency? (Sorry, as I said I know Nothing!) I do like the idea of all the heritage rail you took, that looks like a lovely way to explore and the coastline looks very unspoilt and quite dramatic - and was the ice cream good? I remember years ago being heartbroken when I went to Jersey & there wasn't a genuine Jersey ice cream to be had - I hope that's no longer true! (Just wonder if the short-horn pigs are related to the Aussie Drop Bears? 😉) You guys do a great job - I know you go all over, but the British Isles really is blessed with some amazing destinations.

  • @MemorySeekers

    @MemorySeekers

    2 жыл бұрын

For VAT they are the same as UK but not part of UK , holidays the same as far as I am aware. TT is usually around the end of May you need to google for exact dates, The Island is a self-governing British Crown Dependency so just like Jersey but Isle of Wight is part of the UK not the same at all. They have the Manx Pound that is the same as sterling but cannot be spent off the isle. You can use GBP in IOM fine though. You can fly from a number of airports in the UK or take a ferry. ☺

Absolutely charming. Have seen the videos more critical of the current neglect, and the complaints are valid. With any place, we must take the positives and negatives and hope the net is in the black. Seems overall that is the case with the IOM, but I can also understand why one would criticize the lack of care from municipalities, who inherited such natural and historical grandeur. Fascinated with the Isle before I knew of the TT- but admit that it is a bucket list event- the location makes it.
