ISLAND OF CHERNOBYL: People, who live in the radioactive zone.

The phenomenon of the Chornobyl self-settlers is a relic of the early harsh years of the Zone. The story, we have beheld since 2011 with our own eyes, is never fading away, so this is our attempt to think about the hidden contexts behind it and summarize the feelings it brings. What have been initially shot as a set of video fragments, in the current conditions turned into a short documentary movie.

That is a so good documentary. When her sister passed, for a few months she started to act like... fading away. Then, something changed, she became very joyful. Love her.

Thanks for this video. I have to admit that it is really emotional. I always wanted to travel and get to know the zone, such a disgrace what is currently happening with the war. I hope it gets better soon and it's possible to travel safely again! Thanks for this video and all the computer themed ones.

Thank you! The Zone now.. reminds 1986 as it was described. It is for sure will be open again, and we hope it will not continue turning to a theme park, as, unfortunately, this tendency we've noticed in the last few years. You know, it has to be a place wbich gives you a space for thinking. We are going to make a new series, an insider's view to the zone, and the first ep will be this weekend.

Wow... I am listening about Zone for some time and I never realized that this is one of the very sides that we do not have a chance to see everyday. Thank you for this amazing video showing us the life in Zone. I wish I could be here with all of you and feel the atmosphere.

Thank you! A week ago we visited her again, brought a lot of stuff funded by one of our supporters on Patreon. She is doing good, and in summer it feels like you'd come to your granny in a village. In fact, given that our grandparents are long passed away, she became so.

Thank you! Therr is much more to tell here, it is an entire cultural layer, so might be in the next videos. As i said, the core things that we can't comprehend is, how at one territory this bounds a high-tech civilization without any intersection apart from probably having an energy wire and a TV.

I don't understand how these old people can survive there, they always serve different kind of food to visitors, but were all that stuff come from? There are no shops nearby to reach by foot in that age I guess, how they get their money from their pension even to buy stuff if there is any opportunity too. they get supported but is there a shedule were kind of van like a rolling supermarket visits these villages?

  • @ChernobylFamily

It is complex, but manageable. As for food, they normally have own gardens/fields nearby; a massive amount of food is brought by Zone's staff and by visitors as well. E.g. Hanna sometimes calls me (she has a phone) that she needs something. Pension payments are delivered by the department of the self-settlers affairs which is a branch of the state administration of the Zone. They used to have a mobile store coming once per two weeks, nowadays it comes very very rarely so it is all is running by help of visitors / foresters / police / radiation safety technicians. In fact, we visited her again three days ago, brought a few big bags of stuffs.

To be honest, we went to her for the first time I think in 2011... so a bit earlier than any KZreadr... however, it is not that important, at all. The most important, she is doing well, though she had some health issues a few months ago.
