Islamic University, Bangladesh ( EB for short) is the first government university established in Bangladesh after independence . [2] [3] It is better known as Islamic University, Kushtia . In keeping with the constitution of Bangladesh, the university conducts educational activities with the participation of local and foreign students and teachers of all religions and castes. Undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in theology and Islamic law are awarded only at this university in the country, besides science, engineering and technology, business administration, social sciences and humanities and arts faculties. [4] [5] Initially, the university was financially an Islamic conference organizationAlthough it was managed with the help of aid, at present it is being managed with the funding of the Government of Bangladesh. The institute was established on 22 November 1989 in Kushtia district of Khulna division with the aim of improving Islamic education . [8] The Islamic University started its academic activities on June 26, 1986. At present there are 36 departments under 8 faculties.
The initiative to set up an Islamic school at the university level is very old. Maulana Moniruzzaman Islamabadi first formed a fund in 1920 for the establishment of a Muslim University in Patiya, Chittagong. In 1935, Maulana Shawkat Ali laid the foundation stone of the Muslim University. In 1941, the Mawla Box Committee recommended the establishment of a University of Islamic Learning . The Syed Moazzem Uddin Committee in 1947-48 and the Maulana Muhammad Akram Khan Committee in 1949 recommended the establishment of an Islamic University. May 31, 1983. S. M. After independence, the government of Bangladesh announced the establishment of Islamic University on 1 December 1978. On January 26, 1986, Professor M. A. A conference of heads of state and government of the Muslim world held in Makkah on March 31-April 7, 1986, organized by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation , recommended the establishment of Islamic universities in various Muslim countries. On the basis of this recommendation, President Ziaur Rahman laid the foundation stone of the Islamic University on 22 acres of land at Shantidanga-Dulalpur on 22 November 1989, 24 km south of Kushtia town and 22 km north of Jhenaidah town on the Kushtia-Jhenaidah highway. The following year, on 26 December 1980, the Jatiya Sangsad passed the Islamic University Act. Then on January 31, 1971 the then project director A. N. The Ershad government suspended construction work at Shantidanga-Dulalpur in 1972 under section 4 (b) of the Islamic University Ordinance (Amendment) 1972 (42) and transferred the Islamic University to Gazipur Board Market by an order dated 16 July 1983. The Kushtia-Jhenaidah movement started, during which several Kushtia movement leaders were arrested and imprisoned for a long time. The decision to relocate the Islamic University was taken at a cabinet meeting on January 3, 1989, after being forced into a strong movement.
An order was issued on 24 February 1990 to transfer the university from Gazipur to Kushtia. At that time the work of Shantidanga-Dulalpur campus was not completed. In this alternative system, the Faculty of Theology and Islamic Studies was started in the PTI building in Kushtia city, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Kushtia Medical School and other buildings in the city.
