It is a very easy concept to understand, not a difficult one once you understand the context and seerah of the Prophet PBUH

Even with an understanding of pre Islamic and Islamic history, I still find the concept of enslaving another of Allah's creation disturbing. Even if the one enslaved is well treated. May Allah forgive us.

2 reasons. 1 was to motivate the fighters..ie they knew that they simply had to win. The other was to show confidence to break the opposing sides confidence. Ie look at us...were so confident were going to win that we have even brought our women. There was a battle like this (forget its name) and a debate ensued between the youth and elders over whether to bring along the women. The elders didnt favour it ...but the women were captured and then freed by the muslims. The prophet married jawariah from this battle if anyone wants to look it up.

Today, treating women this way would be a war crime.

Not really. If you read more about it about the status and conditions then you will know what exactly it is. Such captives preferred to stay under guardianship because of their best treatment of them. Read seerah of prophet. Such women rose to dignified status like Hajra (wife of Abraham AS) , Mariya, Jaweriyah who were wives of Prophet Muhammad and became mother of the believers which mean women of highest honour for whole muslim ummah. Google slavery Islamqa and you will know more

Yes. But remember there is a difference between pre Islamic Arabia and post Islamic Arabia. Arab culture and Islamic culture were and are generally at odds with each other. Pre Islamic Arabians wanted to continue their rough way of life and Islam prohibited much of their goings on's. Why do you think they had such a negative response to the Prophet ﷺ and the message revealed to him? They eventually put a 200 hundred camel bounty on him when they failed to silence him.

You mean Arab slavery. As stated before there is a huge difference between Arab culture and Islamic culture which are nearly always at odds with each other. Arab culture also preceded Islamic culture by millennia.
