We visited Kalam traveling from Islamabad on Sat 15th June 24 and drove back on Mon 17th June 24. The road conditions between Bahrain and Kalam are horrible. Although Kalam itself is worth the drive because it turned out to be the most epic scenic place we ever visited yet I would strongly not recommend anyone to drive between Bahrain and Kalam untill the roads are fixed. Expect atleast 10 or 11 km of off roading. Also so many places where the road left overs thin down to barely single vehicle space which is recipe of disaster if traffic approaches from both sides. We chose to drive back right after namaz E Eid so all markets along swat were shut completely and barely no road traffic either way ...but if it wasn't for this opportunity window we could easily have spent 12 hours to make it back to Islamabad. On our smoothest journey run way back we took 6 hours. But this is NO WAY doable on a NON EID AL AZHA day 1 scenario. Kalam is to die for ....but if you choose to drive here with family be prepared for as many as 8 hours up hill with atleast 3 hours easily between Bahrain and Kalam....only if you are lucky not to end up in a jam in the holiday season
