Isis - C'est lui dont les dieux ont fait choix (Lully)

Piece from the movie: Le Roi Danse (The King is Dancing)
Some Info:
Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687)
Italian-born composer (French nationality from 1681). Entered service of Louis XIV 1653, composed instrumental music for the court ballets. From 1664 collaborated with Molière in series of comedy-ballets which were forerunners of French opera, the last and most famous being Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, in which Lully danced role of the Mufti.
Having assimilated both Italian and French styles and tastes, from 1673 he turned to opera composition and obtained from the King exclusive rights to arrange operatic performances in Paris.
His death was caused by a gangrenous abscess which formed in his foot after he struck it with the long staff he used for beating time on the floor while conducting a Te Deum to celebrate Louis XIV's recovery from illness.

Заслуга Люлли в том что он стал сочинять оперы на французском языке и королю это очень понравилось . До этого оперы исполнялись только на итальянском языке , но Люлли сделал оперу французской ,в этом была его великая заслуга для культуры Франции

@@johnnotrealname8168 The success of the French court and its culture was largely due to the synthesis of long-standing influences from Florence, Venice, and Milan. Everything from lace, to millinery, pastries to opera; was imported from Italy, rendered French, and then done in a manner of such exuberance, pompe, and expense, that it would, indeed, shake the musical, cultural, and artistic worlds. France in the late 17th to early 19th centuries, was truly an exponent of both the apex of a society, and the later extreme decadence and upheaval of it. Edit; “Italy” in the geographic sense, as the country did not exist, per se. The Italian city-states, duchies, and kingdoms is what I mean.

Anyone notice how the rise of Madame De Maintenon is shown? First she's seated to the left and behind the king, with Montespan on his right. Then Montespan is gone and it's just Maintenon and Louis, but the colors are still vivid, yet the courtiers are gone. Finally it's Louis, Madame, and all the courtiers are replaced by priests and what ladies there are, including the performers, are all veiled and in black. A clever way of showing Maintenon's increasing influence at court.

Thank you for noticing. Also it's a great contrast with the rest of the film, where Louis is actively engaged with the music and dance, here he just seems bored. Static, even. What once was a vital force for his propaganda now seems like a repetition of the same thing, even though Lully clearly puts his effort into it. There's a stifling at court.

good point I had not noticed that, but Madame is not present at the end; she would have been entitled to an armchair. I love this era and music but this movie required way too much interpreting it. from this i would assume Lulli was madly in love with the king who did not care for his work, when in fact I think it was quite the opposite. also Monsieur and Madame were always seated next to the King. If you look closely, this depicts an opera house, with the king in the orchestra seats and the audience behind him in boxes. They built temporary (can you believe it!) opera houses if they didn't stage these outside.

1:31 notice how Louis XIV has a cross on his neck. A visual cue about the increasing importance of religion in his worldview. After 1685 France rightly or wrongly would be viewed as a reactionary catholic power as opposed to the more docile Habsburgs hell bent on expansion abroad and repression at home. End result the protestant powers of Europe would mostly ally against France in what were likely the last major wars in which religious reasons were important the Nine years war and the Spanish succession. This scene mirrors that increasing authoritarianism in a clever way. These wars would kill millions including famine deaths.

@Louise de La Vallière: His name is Boris Terral. I think his acting is very authentic. If he'd stand there with a bored or expressionless face, he couldn't persuade Louis XIV. to respect him again. It's very touching. All his feelings 'bout Louis become free in this moment. All the time he thought, the king and him are friends. In the end Louis didn't show any emotions except contempt. How would you feel? Years gone by and you think, that you know each other. Then you get dissapointed. Lully devoted most of his compositions Louis. "Without him I'm nothing.." It's kinda sad if you realize that it's over. Did you watch the movie at all? I'm sure you would understand his acting, if you did.

@mango2005 No, Lully enjoyed the king's favor, but the king was leery of Lully's crazy lifestyle and afraid it would stain him too. He probably was disappointed he couldn't dance any more. His father, Louis XIII (of 3 musketeers fame) was the first royal promoter of dance as a dancer himself.

By the end of the film, Louis XIV has long ended his youthful spirit of his great admiration for Jean-Baptiste Lully and has become a more devoted Catholic instead of the liberal and enlightened ruler he was in his youth. His displeasure by the end of the performance signals the end of their partnership and the parting of ways. Wonderful film, despite its historical accuracy.

The genius of Lully ,an italian raised with old italian opera was to create a synthesis between that old opera and the old principles of theatre,of acting.Singing was adapted to the situations în the play to create a more realistic, not artificial impression. Don't forget that Lully started his way in the arts with Moliere

I find it curious that there are many lovers of Classical music, who are aware primarily, of the "Big 3" (Bach Beethoven & Mozart) only. Then there are those who are also familiar with the popular, but somewhat lesser knows like "Handel, Vivaldi, Brahms, Chopin Tchaikovsky, etc. Even less have heard of Corelli, Albinoni, Purcell, Lully, etc. Then there are the obscure, like Gabrieli, Ockeghem, Monteverdi, etc. My point is, same as now, there were MANY great, but relatively unknown composers.
