Actually it was both, because Togashi is cheeky. The Kanji he used was for "malice" but the furigana (characters written over the Kanji to show how they are pronounced) spelled out "evolution", albeit in Japanese. This is a thing Togashi loves...but if we interpret the quote as "malice", then we must also stop saying "Bungee Gum," because the Kanji for that actually means "Elastic Love."

@@brendonw456 This act of word fuckery by Togashi is a fundamental example of "humanity’s potential for malice"
I'd like to imagine the reason why Netero got so upset at Meruem for undermining his humanity is because of his love for self-improvement. Being human is to have flaws. And Netero understands that he, as a human, will never overcome all of his flaws. But that is his drive in life; to overcome any obstacle. He spent years dedicating himself to surpass his humanity and become the best he could be within the reasonable expectation, and superceded even that. Which is why when Meruem, someone who was born to be perfect, who doesn't understand what it is like to experience flaws within the confines of one's own biology, makes a haphazard statement undermining humanity's potential, Netero is enraged.

Thanking God that our creator is good, holy, and "for" his people as flawed as we are - to the point of dying for us.
Netero embodies the Bodhisattva more than any character in fiction I reckon. Ultimate self awareness. Ultimate power. And ultimate discipline. And yet, he's completely flawed in so many ways. It's kind of perfect.
@Thalanox

Yep. And the super-quick instant of time between him starting his attack and the attack landing represents the simultaneity of cause and effect. That's the idea that leads to using the Lotus flower as a buddhist symbol, since it goes to flower and seed at the same time, while most flowers are flowers first before they go to seed. There are other reasons the Lotus flower was picked, I just wanted to give an example of where that concept showed up that the average person might be familiar with.
After finishing this one, it was actually one of your best. You were dead on about his intentions and how Togashi represented them. Netaro isn’t direct about his intentions but they are important tenets, I love the character
Another reason why Netero would be interested in the duo of Killua and Gon is because of their ancestry: Gon’s dad being one of the zodiacs and killuas ancestors being one of the few that went to the dark continent with him.
I'm repeating what other people have said here but you were spot on with your analysis. It was cathartic watching this, and I appreciate the thoughtfulness of your interpretation, even for the little moments. Hope your channel gets the recognition it deserves mate!

When I go back and rewatch the series, it's so entertaining seeing how Netero acts during the Hunter Exam, and more importantly how other characters react to him. Like when Killua thinks he could accidentally kill him if he got too serious in the ball game. Hah! Or especially when Hisoka tells him that he wants to try a fight, and you're caught wondering at the time what kind of fight it would be. But with what you know now... one slap from Kannon would have killed literally everyone on that blimp, Hisoka and Illumi included, before they would have had time to notice, much less react.

Hunter x Hunter is a Masterclass in terms of writing.
What you said near the end about Netero having the wisdom to see through the world and that he is not one to change its ways reminded me about Urahara Kisuke from Bleach, who in that world, is the counterpart to someone who desperately wants to bend the world to his own will with all his power and intellect. That conflict is clearly inspired by Nietzsche's philosophy of the "Uberhuman" and "last human" and now I wonder if Togashi had a similar theme in mind. It seems to me, that Netero's wayward son is pretty much that counterpart to him, the Übermensch / Superhuman, who won't submit to nature's rules and as a result, parts way with all characteristics we call virtuous. It's an interesting concept in my opinion and was definitely my favorite element of Bleach's character building.
That was so well done! Im in awe

With the Netero telling gon where Poitou was. May have been because gon wouldn’t have been able to take the king. Well in that form Netero wouldn’t have known about adult Gon but still. So he leveraged that anger n leaking aura to a more suitable target. Maybe trying to protect gon so he has a chance to thrive in the future. great video! i disagree though, I don't think netero was just, or wise. I think the best way to describe him is determined to a fault.. stubborn even. Selfish. he refused to talk things out with the king, determined to fight it out and let his might decide what was wrong or right. even when the king made some valid points might even benefit humanity he noticed this change and still refused to talk. he set his mind up from the start that he would destroy the king and refused to let that decision change regardless of what happened after. like you said, what he values most of all is giving everything he has to challenge an unstoppable opponent. he valued that above the lives of the ants, valued it above the lives of the humans. everything he does seems to be about testing his own strength in pursuit of that goal.. until the very end where he looses, and blows the king up, with a weapon not from his own strength. this is the last thing we'd expect netero, a martial artist whos dedicated his life to combat, to do. its dishonorable. But it just shows that in his final moments, he puts the sake of humanity above his own personal values, dreams and ambitions. It reminded me of Erwins death in attack on titan, who put the sake of humanity before his dream of finding out the truth of their world, in his final moments when it mattered most, both Netero and Erwin were Selfless. That's just my interpretation of the character

This kind of breaks down when you realize he had to put that bomb in himself in advance. Meaning from the start it was going to be victory by any means. but the way you describe him this is not something that he would do. You describe him someone that would want to win with their own power so why would he even plan to bring a bomb like that?
I am very convinced that Togashi had studied the Bible I see alot references in the Bible and small detail in his writing in HunterXHunter. The fact that Judas was mentioned in York new city confirmed it

He treats all of the man in the palace at that time as expandable pawns, including himself. If not for him and Meruem being transported far away, he have no problem about them dying with him in the Rose explosion. He naturally don't mind using a kid fueled by rage to his advantage. They were fighting for the rest of humanity for gods sake, 'to hell with that kid' is probably what's in his mind.
Yamamoto Shigekuni Genryusai is equally badass as Isaac Netero!

I gotta say most video essay are just regurgitated nonsense that seems disingenuous but I really enjoyed your perspective.
Its funny how people alwaya depict Togashi as this deep thinker with a great plan while he is actually just winging it 50% of the time. The fact that he is such a great storyteller is what makes HxH so great. I mean he literally had no plan for a Powersystem and improvised Nen over time.
