Isaac Asimov's Nightfall

Today we look at what many consider the best science fiction short story ever written. Is it? What do I think?
We look at Asimov's psychological 1941 masterpiece, the short story "Nightfall," as well as briefly examine the novel that expanded on the story later.
So what did you think? Have you read it? Did you agree with most critics about it's class? Agree with my thoughts on the story specially or Asimov generally? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Want to pick up the collection I show you on Amazon? Sure:

Apologizes for the mid-review spoilers. I normally try to stay away for those who care. If you don't, then plug along! I put a tag up for spoilers for the story. I know that some folks love that level of review-dom, but I certainly wouldn't want to ruin it for anyone.
Did you like this review? Awesome! Why not subscribe? Might as well, right? We'll be looking at lots more science fiction, among others.

Interesting, we were at WVU at the same time. But to stay on topic, I read the full length book, not knowing there was a short story. I loved it, and I'm struggle to believe you could cut it down to a fraction of the size and it actually be better. But for now I'll have to take you word for it.

I found Nightfall quite by accident back in like 2000 or 2001 I can't remember. Some old short stories book with cover mostly ripped off found it's way into my hands and I think Nightfall could have been the first story. I read it and turned into a massive fanboy just because of the striking alien concept of a world without night...and of course around those days was an obscure low budget flick with a then little known actor called Vin Diesel that toyed with the same concept and I saw the connection to Nightfall. brings me right back. (And I still love the name Illyra)

The biggest pitfall of Nightfall is: when the solar eclipse happened, it only happens on one side of the planet. The other side is still illuminated by the other 5 suns. People on this side of the planet might burn themselves, the other side will still carry on their normal lives. Civilization would not destroy itself.

Literally a historical book about humanity! IN A WAY. Graham Hancock anyone? Previous civs wiped? Love the book, it translates what needs to be known about the coming grand solar minimum.

Nightfall is not the best science fiction short story (is there one?), but it is a great story. Silverberg's book sucks. It just dilutes the impact of the original.
