Bob and Brad discuss all you need to know about a separated shoulder.

Bob & Brad I just wamt to say that my shoulder has been in severe pain for almost 5 years and I could not afford to even be seen by a doctor. I tried you shoulder hanging exercise and my grip strength was too week so I tried those wrist strap hooks you recommended to hold the bar for me. My shoulder now feels fine for several hours to several days after everytime I shoulder hang now. And now I can do it for 30 or 60 seconds unassisted by the straps hooks even. I am so so so grateful to you for teaching me this free solution.

I just separated my shoulder… the bone was pointing diagonally and ED dr thought it was a grade 3. I still haven’t seen the surgeon, but the bone has gone back into the joint and I am wearing a sling. Hope to be able to do some of your suggested exercises soon. Ice and Advil are good friends!

I think this is the explanation I have been looking for. My shoulder goes up out of alignment when doing the exercises much to the annoyance of the physio. I explained that my brain keeps telling it not to, but my shoulder isn’t listening. Thank you, I am currently successfully doing high arm exercises holding onto baked bean tins trying to improve my strength for the mobility aids I need for my hip surgery.

As someone who who is extremely hypermobil, my shoulders don't stay put very well. Years ago a chiropractor swore that they must have been dislocated many times before because they were so loose. It's better now that I'm 47. I've also done quite a bit of external rotation with bands which helped a lot. And I now sleep on an all memory foam mattress with an additional softer memory foam pad on top. That helps a TON. (Yes, I sleep on my side.) If anyone else has this problem I highly recommend the memory foam mattress and the external rotation with the bands. The rest of the exercises would cause me pain. But maybe they would help some people to heal.

Hello Bob and Brad. I had a grade 3 ac separation years ago. I rehab'd and it felt great a few years later I stopped lifting weights regularly. Every few days my shoulder and areas surrounding my armpits is sore, back and front and hurts. Any tips for that? I've used your chair technique for the impingement, and now gonna start using the bands again.

My girlfriends shoulder separated......and ran after a FEDEX delivery truck yesterday......luckily, I'm pretty good with a rope and managed to catch it and bring it back home before it got lost in the neighborhood, after all a loose shoulder without an eye to see with, could get in all kinds of trouble.....

I dislocated my shoulder years ago when i fell off pipe staging, it ended up popping back in, but ever since then it randomly pops back out at certain times...especially when im sleeping,...it has happened many many times over the years and pretty much ruined my life as i was always in the business of heavy lifting and now dont dare to because of having a bum shoulder, its always loose and seems to jump around often with that feeling of a slight slip in and out all the time.....i believe its because when it slipped out originally it pulled the ligaments/tendons at length and they never tightened back up to properly secure my shoulder.

Does this tend to link to other conditions? I have had huge issues with scapular winging, as well as symptoms of impingement and thoracic outlet syndrome. I only just came across this condition but my acromium visibly detaches and drops down, when I relax that arm. Is this likely a root cause of all the other issues? I think I've had this for many years. As long as I can remember I couldn't stabilise properly for press-ups on that arm.

I separated/ fractured my clavicle about 17 years ago now. I’m now having issues with the same shoulder mostly seems like muscles on the back side/ shoulder blade.. is this common? No pain just discomfort/ tightness. I almost feel like I have a big rubber band around me that won’t loosen up. I have to use a theracane and foam roller a lot to feel any comfort.
