My PC is 8 years old (i7-4930k). The only thing I've done is upgrade the RAM to 32GB, Installed an SSD and a 1080ti. It runs all games at max or high detail settings. People get sucked in by marketing hype and benchmark results. The reality is, most old PC's if paired with enough RAM and a GPU will still feel fast.

@@crystalparrot4985 It depends on how much your PC is. You can upgrade but the cost is like buying a PC depending on parts you want to upgrade. You might as well just build/buy a new one. You can upgrade it by adding RAM and Adding SSD and maybe buying a GPU for it. But if youre gonna replace the CPU and motherboard its a bit expensive. If youre gonna total all of this cost or even at least the first three then its much better to just save up and build a new one

@@crystalparrot4985 8 GBs of ram is simply not enough for current games. 16 GB of ram is standard nowadays. unless you are talking VRAM in your GPU. then still 8 GBs is low for games coming out now currently. 12-16GB of VRAM is what a person buying a new GPU would aim for to have high frame rates at high graphic settings. a prebuilt PC isnt terrible especially for people who are nervous about spending a lot of money and not knowing a lot about how to actually put it together. some prebuilt PCs dont build with the idea that the consumer will want to upgrade their PC down the line. this means enough room in the case to change a part for something else and compatability on parts.

Probably the few things I would upgrade would really mean I have to upgrade basically everything since I am using an old ass FX series cpu and mobo and my ram is still ddr3, so I would need to upgrade pretty much everything, including my AIO watercooling since the bracket needed for AM4 sockets is no longer manufactured and coolermaster lied about it being widely available.

Well done. My theory is dont upgrade until my computer is not performing as I want or I can do something appreciably better with the upgrade than I can now. I wasnt happy with my computer a couple years ago. I had a I5 with a gtx 970. It wasnt fast enough but played games fine, I upgraded everything but the GPU and I was happy as hell with my computer. I saw no reason for the 1000s cards as it stlll wouldnt let me play at 4k like I wanted, even the 2000 cards wouldnt unless I was going 2080 TI and if I have a 970, I think its fair to judge what I think of that kind of money for a GPU. Now I figure I can get 4 or 5 years out the 3080 and thats an acceptable value to me, so if its ever for sale I'll buy one. Still not willing to buy AMD, dont trust the drivers, but my patience could get the best of me if AMD is actually available.

I realise this video is at least a couple of years old, but the message remains. The model numbers and specs change, but the story and advice are constant. It reminds me of the Horsepower Wars of the 60s and 70s. Cars have always triggered competitiveness in their owners, but those decades, I think, peaked out the rivalries, with FORU divisions at GM (two of which have disappeared since) fought Ford, Chrysler, and American Motors and one another for bragging rights at drag strips - and public thouroughfares - all oveer North America. To a degree, designing extra performance in products benefits customers as well as the sales of the manufacturers, but, as you pointed out, advances are sometimes miniscule and even negatively effective. I personally am trying the ols hotrodder's trick, combining old parts from several sources, to try to squeeze more performance out of a beater.

Looking at what I needed to do to have this new cpu supported on my old motherboard, I found out getting my motherboard up to speed on compatibility by updating BIOS already improved my performance drastically, even visually, to an extent that I'm now considering not upgrading my cpu at all for now and am now seeing if I can do the same magic as to not needing a new gpu either. I may get a new case first, as I've noticed my old build struggles more over high temperatures than anything. The reason your pc might be slow is likely not the hardware by itself.

I’ve read about it and apparently sometimes when you do an update you MoBo can bug out or it can cause you’re pc to think it only has 1 core, so to fix it you should try updating bios, but I’ve tried to look up how to do that and can’t figure it out, would you be able to help me out please?

I decided back in early september that I wanted to build a computer. My budget was supposed to be around $1000. After putting parts together I quickly realized that $1300 was more realistic for me. Then ampere was announced. Then amd 5000 series was announced. Then big navi was announced. My new budget is well... nonexistent. I'm building a 5800x/radeon 6800xt pc now. $2000 is about where I'm at. Please kill me. I don't need this good of a pc but I want it so bad.

ah yeah the newer parts are getting a little too expensive these days i had a plan for upgrading then so many chipsets from last gen to this gen and then the next gen cards are soo much better gpu wise and one money base line of x amount turned into wait till this amount then the supplys of the items turned it into what about 3000 or more for overpriced stuff i thought nope keep waiting lol.

3600 & 2070s is a good combo for 2k res. Only go for new parts if you need a high fps 4K resolution.

Great video, I got a pre-built from microcenter during peak covid, and definitely spent more than what it is today, but it has a ryzen 5 5600x, 3060, 1tb nvme, and 32gb ddr4 ram at 3200mhz. Really felt like i "needed" to upgrade since it was a pre-built, but after watching this I'm glad I haven't been totally sucked in to the new upgrades.

Mine sadly died in February this year (MB failure) Friend was upgrading his entire Intel rig, so he sold me that for £《200 (i7 5820k) Then I upgraded my faithful R9 270 gpu to a 2060S due to the hdmi port playing up :( Like you, had the PC (less gpu) for 10+ years. Not a mad PC gamer, but now ive brought a Quest vr headset for the family, glad the new rig has enough umpf to do the pcvr thing.

Phenom II X4 955 also going strong, my only issue is with the graphics card, and then mainly because a game tricked me into updating drivers. Although, my HD5770 is noticeably lacking, so I was eyeing an upgrade before it started crashing. Something like 1650 super or 1070, but I think I'll wait until early next year.

In 2011 I built a system with a 4-core phenom AMD processor and 16gb of ddr3 ram and it still holds its ground today. My advice is to build a computer with the future in mind and go as long a you reasonably can without upgrading. After 11 years I decided to upgrade with the same philosophy I used building my last one and I am hoping to get 10 years out of my new system.

I'm putting my first pc together and hearing Jay talk about "outdated" hardware from a year ago isn't that old reminded me that I'm getting a 9600k. While it's not bad I'm pretty sure it was the bare minimum I could get away with sooooo...
