Is Winning Chess Strategies by GM Yasser Seirawan a worthwhile read for club players?

This month on “Chess Books Recaptured” we discuss a book that is especially vital for club players, Winning Chess Strategies, by the beloved former top player, turned author and announcer, GM Yasser Seirawan. As the title might suggest, this is a book that focuses on the subtler, non tactical aspects of chess that are not always intuitive for adult improvers. I am joined again by popular guest co-host Neal Bruce. Neal has read many chess books focused on positional chess, and feels that this is the best one. In our recap, we discuss a few of the key concepts, and some of our favorite quotes and games, all of which Yasser explains in his inimitable style. Please read on for more details, timestamps and show notes.
0:00- We begin by discussing why Winning Chess Strategies is a beloved and well-reviewed book, and discussing the various formats in which it’s available.

10:30- Despite the oft repeated dictum that chess is “99% tactics” Neal and I both think books like this are important. Why?
Mentioned: GM Avetik Grigoryan on why chess isn’t just tactics:

14:00- For what level is this book appropriate? How difficult are the quiz questions?
Neal thinks the 1200 to 2000 range. I think more like 1000-1800 would benefit the most from it.
Mentioned: GM Ben Finegold

First chess book i ever read. Still remember it, read it in the mountains on a family trip. Great book. I learned all of my fundamental chess knowledge from this book. Couldn't recommend it enough!

I had these books from Microsoft Press in the early 2000s. Winning Chess Endings was always the hard one to find and it was super expensive as a used book on Amazon. The rest could be purchased used for like a couple of dollars each plus shipping. I had Play Winning Chess, Tactics, Strategy, Brilliancies and eventually I got Endings. I don’t remember Combinations.

Great interview and great review of this book. Yasser owes you a portion of the royalties he will earn from the sales of dozens of copies of this book from your podcast.

First the two of you make really good advertising for this book, and then near the end Neal says that reading the book had almost no impact on his chess. I am glad he said that, but I wish he would say it at the beginning.

Hi, I am reading Winning Chess Strategies and thought after I am done with this book to move onto Mastering Chess Strategy from Johan Hellsten. I am about 1800 rating, and thinking that the book Mastering Chess Strategy is a good next step. Do you think Mastering Chess Strategy book is better for players rated from 1800- 2200?

Love yasser, don’t like his books. He will give you a diagram with a specific position and the next 35 moves will all take place based on that single diagram. It would be much more helpful if every 6 or 7 moves he put another diagram That’s good because with a diagram every 6 or 7 moves you can practice visualization . If you aren’t magnus Carlsen or some 2600 + GM 35 moves is probably a bit steep, particularly because this book is aimed at people in the relatively lower skill range like 1500 I know he wants you to play the positions out on a board but if I’m just laying down reading I don’t want to have to have a chessboard out and play it out physically , I just like to think about the positions That’s just IMO. He is clearly a good teacher and the information is good just need a few more than a single diagram for a 40 move game

Warn parents about Yasser's use of the word lust' in his book? The word lust can have sexual and non sexual connotations. It irks me when I listen to an American podcast, and they are so prudish, and yet porn is easily accessible on the net....get real

😂 My parents were about as catholic as it gets and even they weren’t that neurotic. Little Timmy reads a grown up word and turns into a drug addict. The discussion was great though I’ll definitely pick up the book.
