Is water in the UK clean enough to swim in?
I love outdoor swimming, but is water in the UK clean enough to swim in? We hear a lot in the media about raw sewage overflowing into our rivers and the sea, but we still swim. Let's look at what affects water quality, the risks, the tools we have to help us make an informed decision about where and whether to swim, and how to minimise the risk of becoming unwell after a swim.
Filmed in the River Frome in Somerset, and at Beaulieu and Lepe in Hampshire on a GoPro Hero 10 and edited on Lumafusion app for iPad.

Enthralling collection of topics this week Rachel. You must have your mojo back to research & edit all this together! From a mystery bird to dark spidery tunnel; from bracing autumnal temperatures to waste disposals in our favourite swimspots. Super important websites here for the 'underwater foragers' amongst us too, because of bioaccumalation of toxins in shellfish etc. Thank you 👌

Well I'm pleased you enjoyed this week's video. It is one I've been thinking about for a while and have touched on, but I thought I'd be more overt about it this time. Hopefully it helps people make decisions for themselves and continue to swim when it's safe enough for them at theis spot 🏊😀
You have no idea how many of your videos I have watched! They’re so informative and you have such a nice attitude. Perfect at explaining ! That river you swam in looks heavenly, I understand you want to keep the place secret but really looks gorgeous

Wow, thank you! This river is a beauty would love to explore more of it!
I think the phrase "without at overflow sewage would backup into peoples homes", While technically true, is used by the water companies as an excuse for a long term lack of investment in the system. Many systems need a fail safe be it a circuit breaker, fuse, pressure relief valve or overflow, but these should not be relied on for normal operation. It would be unacceptable for the power grid to fail regularly just due to high demand so why would an arguably more important piece of infrastructure be any different. I'm not having a rant at you at all, just this is a subject I feel strongly about and I think the media unwittingly parrot this sort of thing without thinking. Good video though lots of good advice, thanks.👍 Also you seem to have a better understanding of how the system works than the news does.
You're videos are helpful, Rach. Although I'm not a wild swimmer, I do photography and field recordings at these types of sites and before watching these videos I had no idea about currents, eddy's, water assessment pre-swim etc. So I now know to try to access the water before I setup my gear, just in case I slip in!

1:09 - “First gasp of Autumn”… yes, don’t we all know and love that feeling!! Wilderness gal here from northern 🇨🇦… happy to say that there are no sewer systems or sewage treatment plants where I live. All homes have self-contained septic systems. The riparian zones and the lake-shores are heavily protected from outhouses and animal grazing. There is no industry, and houses are few in my neck of the woods.. You did a really great job of explaining and clarifying all the information in this video Rachel. On a separtare note: I love the rock archway that you and your friends were swimming under. It looked like a lot of fun. Thanks for the useful info in today’s video Rachel. Sending Big Energy to you. 💦🌎Ⓜary🏊♀

It’s great for coastal swimming. ‘Enjoy!’
Great video Rachel, great to highlight the appalling lack of response and inaction from the government. For far too long the emphasis has been on profit for the water companies shareholders, at the expense of cleaning up their act! And we, the end user ,as usual, are the ones who suffer. Well done Rachel.👏👏👏👍

Hi Rachel, very informative video. as i have mentioned before we always swim at stoney cove, the water is very clean. we've always worried about swimming in the rivers. when we go to devon we always swin in the sea, so the safe seas app will come in handy.

Hi Gary, I must get to Stony Cove. I've heard such good things about it. Glad the app will come in handy when you're by the coast! Happy swimming!
Great video, I use the Safer Seas app and feel lucky that we don’t seem to get too many alerts where I swim. I remember growing up in South Devon in the 1970’s the sea was a lot dirtier than it is these days and tummy upsets after swimming were quite common so I do feel some progress has been made but we definitely have a long way to go and water companies and the government really need to take this more seriously. Thought you were brave swimming under that bridge!!
@EverydayAthleteRach

The bridge was something else, a bit close to my hair - enough to freak me out a little. I've only been ill a couple of times, but it was really unpleasant. Luckily my 2 local spots are not that affected by outfalls.
Thanks for this info and the map to see how safe the rivers are. I've been looking for something like this for ages but could only find quality levels at beaches. I'm disgusted by all these sewer discharges, now I don't feel safe to swim at my local OWS spot. It's a shame our own environment secretary(now PM) allowed this situation to get much worse.
@EverydayAthleteRach

It's pretty gross isn't it. I think that there's a lot that everyone can do to help, as well as the water companies. I still swim in rivers, but I always consider the recent weather and if in dowubt I assess the likelihood of an outfall release based on the map. Lakes are another option though...
How lovely to see your video in my notifications this morning. I hope you are feeling better and continue to regain your strength. @@EverydayAthleteRach Yes, too true. Where I swim water quality in the river improved a lot in the past 30 years, but in summer I can't swim in any of the near by lakes because they contain something that causes a rash once the water gets too warm. No idea what it could be.

@@EverydayAthleteRach That's what I thought at first, too. But I don't have any problems on my legs only on my torso. So, now I suspect it has either something to do with the combination of dark fabric and warm water or I'm just very sensitive to blue green algae and react to them long before they reach a critical amount. It remains mysterious , though.

It’s odd. I always thought if there was a lot of rain it would help dilute the waterways. Whereas, a drought would lead to stagnation and a lack of oxygen flow. It’s hard to know when to swim. Your video really helped. Thanks.

Periods of dry weather seem to affect the rivers by reducing volume of water, and then the river vegetation is more prominent, I tend to swim in the sea. Managed lakes have quality monitoring I think, but are payable to use.. I hope you find somewhere to swim 🏊😀
