Hi Brian. Just to let you know the money rate varies according to government spending basically. The US ( and the UK, where I am from!), have been borrowing extra trillions to pay for fighting covid. The money market doesn't like that! That's why the dollar went down mainly. The UK pound has dropped from nearly 72 pesos to around 62pesos. Big hit on my measly pension😮😪😪 Not all because of covid, went down a lot, when Britain voted to quit the European Union. Thanks for the walk around, being over 60 not even allowed to enter our one and only supermarket now. The first two months was fine, no problems, had the pass etc. Now, no way! All the best from Pangasinan

Brian, near the end of the video you were mentioning the fact that you had no idea about why/how the exchange rate goes up/down. I've lived here for almost 17 years now, four in Angeles and the rest in and around Mindanao. We've lived in three different places since we moved here in 2008. But I digress. The exchange rate, although it is supposed to float with the market, often does not. Some fluctuations make no sense whatsoever and I tie those into currency manipulation by the Philippine government. The times when the dollar/peso rate goes down seem to coincide with 1) OFW inflows of dollars, 2) whenever the price of oil goes down (the Philippines uses dollars to buy oil because pesos are not accepted but they don't have to buy up dollars when the price is lower because they keep a good supply of dollars on-hand at the Banco Central), and 3) when a CHMMP occurs and wrecks the world economy. That's my laymen's understanding of how the currency exchange rates work here in the Philippines. Also, you'll notice that the Euro and the Pound are ALWAYS rated better than the dollar. That has to do with the fact that the Philippines has big investments in the EU and Britain and they inflate the currency so it's cheaper to do business. Sorry this ran on so long. Hope you will have time to read it.

I think my last time there was Nov. 2003. Angle Witch was my home bar but it wasn't Angle Witch then. It was Illusions then Private Dancer back then. Same owner. German guy named Wolfe. They had the best pool table in town. Great memories in that bar and on Fields.

Brian, the exchange rate changes based on supply and demand. Who’s exporting now-a-days from the Philippines? Also, not much travelers leaving the country. OFW remittances are down. Many businesses are still shut down, a lot will never open their doors again. Tourism is at an all time low. Wonder how long it will take for the Philippine economy to recover with the stringent COVID 19 policy?

Hey Brian, I hope Lot Lot, Hannah Grace and yourself are doing good. Having my wife and family in Mandaluyong and not being able to get there from Canada yet is really hard to deal with at times. I'm very worried for them and all the people in Metro Manila, you probably know the cases are getting higher there. Thankfully I'm financially able to take care of things there for them right now. Is Angeles City still 0 cases? I haven't spent time in Angeles City, just landed and took off from Clark once, but following your channel for the last few years I have become familiar with Angeles City, Dao, and other places you have taken us in videos. Seeing walking street like this is shocking to see because it ....was....such a hub of energy 6 months ago. It's sad knowing how much this damn virus is effecting the Philippines in such a negative way. So many people are out of work and the longer this drags on the worse it's going to get. I just hope and wish for a vaccine to be found soon. The problem being not all countries will be in a situation to be able to afford the vaccine, nor will the people in those same countries. That's scary because it means that the damn virus will just continue on mutating. I know the people that can afford the vaccine there will most likely get it even though most Filipinos are scared of vaccines because of the scare a few years ago with the 'contaminated' vaccine that so many people in the Philippines had gotten. I will be making sure that my wife and family there will have the vaccine when it is available, I'm sure you'll do the same for Lot, HG, and the immediate family of Lot's that are there with you at the store and at home. Please keep safe my friend. Thanks for the walk along walking street. It just didn't seem the same. Peace, Happiness, Love and Laughter, Keep Safe All, -Matt

The rate is going to continue downwards into mid-thirties. The billions in debt to China is coming due. Those loans only get paid by exchange rate manipulation. Please look at the history of the Thai Baht. Same pattern is slowly emerging in The Philippines.

Wow I found this Video really interesting, I was stationed in Clark AB from 1989-1991 when Mt Pinatubo blew up, I left, I went back for the Centennial Celebration, but I have not been back since, and it looks like EVERYTHING has changed, the only thing I even recognized was Magaritas. And even that place looks different. I wish you would take more time and go farther down Fields Ave, give me some reference points. I used to live in Santa Maria Balibago, Which if I am right is like right around the corner from where you stopped the video, I felt like I was just starting to recognize places when you stopped the Video. I don't think there is a single bar that has the same name as when I was there. Does the Train still run through there? It used to when I lived there. But this was really interesting. I noticed an Alley way you walked buy that looks like a bunch of bars were destroyed, do you know the story behind that? Thanks.

Not sure how I missed this video, but I watched it now. Why do some people feel this urge to correct others over something so silly as saying "the" walking street, instead of simply walking street? I mean, it is THE walking street, because literally any street you can walk down would be a walking street. But, you are talking about THE walking street and it seems perfectly acceptable to refer to it as THE walking street, to differentiate THE walking street from just another street to walk down, as opposed to THE walking street. Hahaha. Gee, I hope I didn't offend those " know it all" types that jump on you for saying THE walking street, by saying THE walking street, too. Haha. Either way, you should always be careful walking down any street, but especially when walking down THE walking street. Haha, just had to throw in one more to show you support.

It is obvious that all the bars are closed on Walking Street......there are zero tourists, haven't been for 3 months. The bars were not patronized by locals; all the patrons were foreign tourists. There's no point opening until foreigners can again travel to the Philippines. The city will issue permits to the bars when the Immigration dept. again issues 'visa on arrival'. It seems obvious to me...it is hardly a mystery.

There are enough ex-pats living here to support a handful of bars, but that's about it. Personally, I think this correction will be good in the long run for the Angeles Bar scene. There were too many bars, and not enough customers. Sometimes less is more, and in this case, I think fewer quality bars will be better than a ton of crappy bars.

  • @allankleidon6437

I saw in one of your earlier videos that some of Walking Street's bars had undergone recent renovations, this would indicate that, at some future stage they will reopen. Maybe not all bars will reopen simply due to current and immediate ongoing lack of income (due to covid closure) could have caused financial difficulties for Owners/Investors, hence non-renewal of some existing leases. I've heard, through the "Grapevine" that International Flights and Tourist Visas may start being permitted by September / October this year. Personally, I have no intention to travel anywhere till the COVID Vaccine has been released.

You are not going to break even for a long time, you have to have deep pockets and staying power . There are local tourist from other islands who will fly in and spend money , but not if you don't open the damn. Also most of the bars on walking street put themselves for jacking up the the prices and cratering to Koreans, LoL.

Tough luck for you, Philly, you are stranded there. You should move to Thailand where the bars and nightlife are open now. They will accept tourists on Aug 1 where incoming international flights are allowed to open.

The sad reality is, the city officials needs to care about all the different dynamics that make up the attractions in and around Angeles city, because if they don’t you will be living in the new Detroit of the Philippines.

In many countries its not just a case of being safe and having no job, its also having no food. It also means early death of malnutrition and related complications, death if you cant afford private health care in emergency etc. The longer this is going on the more I'm feeling that the decision makers don't have sufficient data in front of them when making decisions.

When the USA creates money out of thin air in large quantities it in effect creates a surplus. When there is a surplus of something the value decreases.

Hi, you mentioned the rate on the pesos to dollar being below 50. I think since the U.S. printed and gave away the stimulus money they diluted the value of the dollar. I'm not an expert but I would assume it will continue to drop. Not good, I'm now an American ex C.O. living in the Philippines for 8 months now. Take care

They will allow international flights when your home countries allow them. Sorry B but the USA is pretty much screwed right now based on the news that im seeing in Canada, the numbers are very high. As for Canada our numbers are going up too but it's all being attributed to the young adults, same for the USA numbers also.

the dollar exchange rates are dropping because the US in one week created trillions of dollars out of thin air for the stimulus payments and other debts. The more US dollars created then the less purchasing power. If the US prints up more money then the exchange rate should drop more unless the Philippines devalues their money by printing more of their's.

When you winge about the US/Peso exchange rate please cast a sympathetic thought to the Brits. I was king of the hill in the 90's with 108 pesos to the GBP. And then came the belt-tightening days of the middle 2000's when it was 58P/£1. All the time prices crept up. Our 5 bedroom house that started at 15000 a month rent was beyond a joke 10 years later with rent rises of 10% per an...and we had to up the deposit to match year by year. Meanwhile the US dollar has never gone beyond 44 to 55 as I recall.

Wow reading these comments are scary. Yes sometimes it has to do with oil and gas, but not at all at this moment. A ton of SE Asian countries are driving the value of their currency value down. It will allow them to loose far less money especially when repaying current loans. Weak money less loss. Why do you think Thailand is so freaked that baht is so strong right now ? They are near a US dollar more than other countries and are about to get hammered. 8-10 percent of its gross. Yet Vietnam actually tried to lower the exchange rate last year and probably will break even. Nothing to do with oil and gas right now. It's called currency manipulation.
