Thanks for the update! Again, costs matter from where you order, but even if there is a price difference, I would always recommend the TS100 But the piencil is still an option And regarding a PD USB C power source that can run from a 6S LiPo, I looked for this for a long time, because I needed to power my razer blade stealth from a LiPo. The best option I found was a Lenovo Car charger; the Lenovo 40AK0065WW It works well on my 6S LiPo and provides 65W of power, still a little expensive ;)

The Pinecil V2 is specified for 24V maximum but I heard somewhere the actual maximum is closer to 28V, so it can take a 6S input. I think the USB input is going to be a massive advantage for a lot of people as USB-PD power banks get more common. No shade on TS100 though. They walked so the clones could run.

I have to use the TS100 for some heavy duty machine field repairs (ripped signal cables most of the time that need a fast fix before the OEM replacement cable comes in). I can simply hook it to the 24V machine power terminals. But almost all of them have that one dealbraker at some time - They are not capable of heating cables with certain thermal mass. Signal cables no problem, but für power cables from 2.5 mm^2 upwards i am forced to use a propane torch and an iron, especially when it is a bit windy and cold outside.

I got the T's 100 and it's brilliant as long as you pump the heat up to 480c and you don't have to do too much negative stuff as it rips the heat out of it. But out and about the T's has been the difference between going home or making one quad out of 2 broken ones. Either way its a must have in the tool box, or talk your flying mates to get one?

  • @HumanShield117

In your heat-up test, you talk about how the power dies off as it gets closer to the target-temperature. That's because the tip-temperature is actually controlled by a PID-loop, same as 3D printers or a quadcopter like what we fly, so it's intentionally lowering the power to avoid over-shooting. Or at least, I remember that being a selling-point of basically all of the more fancy irons... Also, if I remember correctly, the TS-100 on official firmware has a max-temperature of 400C, and the power-boost mode that Ralim uses can push it to max (I think it also disables the PID loop), which is probably around 450C. But I haven't looked into it since the week I got my TS-100. :)

If you need a XT60 to USB-C conversion device, check out the ToolkitRC SC100 wire. In order to connect it to the flight pack you will still need a XT60 male to male adapter, but when you have a soldering iron, you can make it up yourself) Also, having say a ToolkitRC M7 charger you can potentially power up the iron from the Power Output on the charger through the SC100 cable. And there are some other options which you can come up with, so there is a field for experiments. P.S. Pinecil V2 for the win!

Shipping is (or at least used to be) an 11$ flat rate to Russia from the pine64 store. Buying several irons and sharing them with the community makes it even less per iron. I guess I don't need to say which iron I've got. The price and USB-C capability were the deciding factors (although I must admit I've only powered it once from USB-C, and that was to solder up an xt60 to barrel plug wire, which I've been using exclusively since then :). Oh, and I'm also one of those weirdos who fly 5S :) Anyway, it's an awesome iron, especially for the price, but I can't say if it's the best. I probably would've been just as happy with an SQ-001 or TS100, but would never have bought the latter. It's just too expensive for what it is :)

Yes all of what you said regarding how FPV pilots would think about this soldering iron is accurate. I also thought about not being able to use 6S on this iron. RISC-V is not as well known as ARM (which most MCU are using), and China is basically pushing toward RISC-V in order to not be dependent on ARM.

The Pinecil V2 was just released today, and has bridged the gap between the V1 and the TS100. It now accepts 24v @3a through the DC jack, while still maintaining the USB PD input and the USD$25.99 price. I believe they are opening an EU store to reduce shipping cost outside of the US as well!

@@JoshuaBardwell I guess we'll have to find out if 24v is a hard limit. Strangely, it's rated 18-88w rather than 72w (24v * 3a), so it might not be a hard limit

Funny thing. When you order from germany it is exactly the same price. I thought I could try the pinecil, but it literally cost here 50€ same as the TS100. So with no price differences. The TS100 is for me slightly more worthy

I'd love to get portable iron for when I'm out and about, but I'm used to irons with very little stick-out and I'm not sure I'd be able to manage. I stopped burning myself with soldering irons many years ago when I bought one without the long stick-out, is the flexibility of where you can use them really worth burning yourself every month?

It's not that hard to get it in Europe. I bought it from the official store, they also have European warehouse (in Netherland if I remember), you have to pay for the shipment of course but it's still cheaper than ts100.

You flashed the firmware from the pinesil soldiering iron on to the TS 100. That is why it's behaving Exactly as the other soldering iron. I have a completely different firmware flashed on my TS 100. It goes to 450° no problem.

The main advantage of the RISC-V processor is that, being an open source architecture, the manufacturer doesn’t have to pay royalties to use it. That likely contributes to the Pinecil’s lower cost.

What I was told is that it burns out a pin on the chip that is required to flash new firmware. So it will still function, but you won't be able to flash new firmware to it. I haven't verified this.

What a difference a year makes eh. The Pinecel was slightly ahead of the game a year ago with a small lead on the TS100 but only in a couple of areas. Now, since December, 2022 we can buy the TS101 which has two power ports extending the flexibility of the product. The Pinecel does not allow rotating of the screen for lefties and that's me so right off the bat, it is not suitable for my use. I will be using a barrel plug on the TS101 I have orfdered so the USB C in both of these comparable irons isn't even an issue for me. The TS101 is shorter but both suffer from long reach which exaggerates any hand wobbles that may occur - deadly for SMD work. So sadly for me, I still haven't found the perfect iron, and I have 9 different types.

Yeah, I don’t think a soldering iron is something most people would upgrade or whatever unless you’re already in the market for one. It always gets me how my friends will have like 3-5 radios, but their flying is still the same, even after they upgraded the radio. I think the same for this iron… your soldering won’t improve without practice, so if your current iron works, what’s the point in getting a new one? Just me?

ts100: the 65w are not used is not a firmware bug. we could reproduce it. 65w is not possible on 4s. You need the almost 6s (22v) to be able to use 65w at the tip because the soldering iron apparently passes the input voltage on to the tip 1:1. maybe this is for joshua bardwell from the future in the video. 😜
