Some pretty valid arguments in this video. As someone who's lived in both cities (and Chicago) for a decent amount of time - I feel like Toronto is somewhere in the middle of both its American counterparts. It has the size and population of Chicago and the two cities look similar too but Toronto's vibe, culture and diversity is much closer to New York than Chicago, which is not as diverse and has a slower Midwestern feel. If you like the exciting NYC vibe without that insane pace and massive crowds everywhere, Toronto can provide a nice balance whether you're thinking of visiting or moving.

Quit comparing Toronto to some American cities because American cities has nothing to compare to no Canadian cities. Toronto has nothing unique about themselves, Chicago does, So what Toronto is so diverse about? chicago and NYC are diverse as well, but you know what's the difference between Chicago and Toronto? Chicago has pride, identity of their own, better history, friendly people, American flags everywhere. What about Toronto?? Nothing, just a copycat of NYC with fabricated shoe box condos from China and diversity? Torontonians bring up diversity because they know Toronto have nothing other than diversity in which diversity is global.

I've been to both cities and there's is something in Toronto that makes me feel happier than NYC during my visits. NYC is older and was built earlier and Toronto is younger and more fresh built overall. Both cities has excitement, variety, and a lot things to do. In general, I enjoyed more visiting Toronto over NYC.

Very insightful first impressions. Toronto can be a very fun place to visit, especially in the summer.

Downtown is bustling with full patios, lots of people out at the clubs on Friday and Saturday night, outdoor events, places like the harbourfront, the Danforth, Kensington Market, the club district, Yorkville, and the Beaches are all packed. Now that covid has closed many places and people are afraid of going out things might be quieter this summer.

I've been to both. Toronto is cool and all, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Nothing against Toronto, but you can't really compare the two. New York is much bigger (which is part of the reason that is comparatively less tidy). Consider the population densities of the two: NYC =27,962.21/sq.mi., Toronto = 10,750/sq mi. NYC itself has a larger population than the entire GTA. To add to this, the GTA has a population of about 6.5 million compared to Greater New York's 20.3 million. NYC is a beast. You compare it to cities like London and Tokyo (where I currently live), not Toronto.

Toronto and New York both have boroughs. In New York it's Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and The Bronx. In Toronto it's Etobicoke, North York, York, East York, Old Toronto, and Scarborough.

Yeah but the difference between TO boroughs and the NYC boroughs is that NYC boroughs are all very urban, city like areas with excellent walkability, pedestrian friendliness and excellent public transit. Toronto's boroughs for the most part (particularly Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough) are just suburbs that have been amalgamated with Downtown (FKA Old Toronto, where the city's true origins are).

You are very clever, Mary Jane, and very observant. In a short visit you have nailed down a lot of valid comparisons. You also have a very appealing personality, and way of getting your points across. Well done!

Downtown Toronto has an underground pedestrian network call PATH that stretches across the entire downtown area. It has tons of shops and restaurants and connects to all the buildings and transit stations along the way. So in the winter, you could potentially spend your entire day indoors if you live and work in the downtown area.

Loved this video. I remember going to the US and it took me an embarrassing amount of time at the cashier looking through all my bills trying to find the right one 😂

What part of Italy are you from?

I live in a lakeside neighbourhood in Toronto called The Beaches. We walk every day along the boardwalk and on the beach in the winter. There are also locals who take a plunge in the lake every day in the winter, but that is unusual. There is also an annual outdoor art show on the beach in the winter: Winter Stations. It’s well attended by people walking on the beach. Also, we have many outdoor skating rinks in the city, a few along the lake, where we enjoy time outside skating and drinking hot chocolate. The temp may hover around 0, to -10 Celsius for much of the winter, but that’s 10 to 32f. Come back for the winter ❄️ There is much to love!

Most of those skyscrapers you see in the Toronto clips are condos. The majority of the tall buildings you see were mostly built after 2000. So the whole landscape of Toronto has changed in the last 22 years. Back then the tall buildings in the downtown core were mostly office towers and a few shorter condo buildings. Toronto is very diverse. You can walk for an hour in certain neighborhoods and hear 10 or more languages spoken. The food culture also reflects this. It is a relatively safe city compared to other North American cities and very clean.

love your videos. New York and Toronto are my fav cities in the east side of this great continent. Both are unique and one of a kind. New York is AMAZING, it's a Global city heavily integrated with the world economy. Sure people seem to be always in a rush and engulfed in work. But hey, that's why it's so competitive and a world leader that influences the world markets. Toronto is similar in many ways, but a much more scaled down version, it almost doesn't compare unless we're measuring their reflection of their respective countries. That said, my impression of Toronto when I studied there is a city still creating itself. Toronto is colder, stats says Toronto Jan average daytime high temperature is 32 (0C) New York 39.2F (4C), although there are huge temperature swings in winter.

Hello Sean. I think I totally get you when you say Toronto is a city that's still creating itself. For me they are both very recent cities cause I come from the Old Continent...but New York has been the huge metropolis that it is for a few decades now, whereas in Toronto I can see that is still developing very quickly, so it hasn't reached its peak yet. That's the magic of Europe, it's old charm can't be beat or replicated. New York is well established and has nearly reached its peak, but is well ahead of the game. Toronto has cranes everywhere and the city is booming and still stamping its place in North America and the world. Toronto has the most cranes in all of North America. Toronto has an estimated 97 active construction cranes, well ahead of second place Seattle at 65, and nearly 5 times more cranes than New York's 20 active cranes. To scale it, Toronto has more active construction cranes than New York, Chicago and Los Angeles combined (US's largest cities). In addition, there are more than 400 approved and proposed buildings in Toronto, I imagine this will change the city's skyline and density.

Toronto's winters are not as cold as you claim. The normal temperature is not -10c, it's around -3c and we very rarely would ever get below -20c. In fact, we get less than 30 days below -10c, which for some people is really cold but for me, the weather here is not so bad. Also we do have the largest under ground city in the world, for those days when it is below -10c (my comfort level) Our cold snaps usually last for 2 to 5 days in a row, so we never have to go too long with unreasonably cold weather. As for snow, over the last few years Toronto has had snow on the ground for only 2 to 3 weeks for all of Winter, so not much snow at all. It's the end of January now and we have only had our first major snow fall this week. It's really not as brutal as some people claim and every year, it seems to get milder and milder.

I would tend to agree; I think there is a mental image of Canada as being super cold that people from other countries carry with them. I can attest that NYC can also be VERY cold and VERY windy in the winter, albeit generally somewhat milder than Toronto. Visitors to Toronto in winter comment constantly about the cold, but in NYC even if it is the same temperature they take it for granted and don't comment much about it.

I'm four years late but still, I must say that your interpersonal skills are impressive. And I agree with many of your points. Excellent video.

I’ve been to both cities and in Toronto I have family so it would be ideal to live in Toronto rather than NYC. However I would also love to live in NYC.

How do Americans pay cash for a price that includes cents? For example, something that costs $1.50. Or are the prices all even?

If I had to guess I would say Russian/Belorussian or Ukrainian based on the vowel mixups and some specific sound pronounciations such as th -> d etc I am not attacking or calling you out , just curious.

I live in New Jersey 20 to 30 minutes via train from nyc and I am French Canadian by blood so My dad lived there I temporarily lived in Toronto in the summer growing up and I have family in Toronto plus my fiancée lives there so I feel like a can say with experience I love Toronto a lot more personally.

I actually just got a dollar coin with my change in NYC 😅 So I have to take back what I said in the video, Americans DO have one dollar coins (they really are not common though 🙄)

Canadian money used to have paper $1 and $2 banknotes but they were replaced with the coins in the 1990s. There is a US $2 banknote but that is not widely used. The US $1 coin also is not widely used. The reason why it was probably given to you is because it is a nuisance to retailers to hold onto it and a visitor is less likely to complain about getting it.

Often a store in NYC will give out any dollar coins they have to a tourist, because New Yorkers will ask for bills. It's not easy for them to get rid of coins.

Toronto is gorgeous and the people are very classy. It's a mix of North America and Europe in a way.

I lived in NYC for 3 years then Dubai, now I wonder how this transition would be to Toronto 🤔🙄

My friend, there are a GREAT many suburbs surrounding New York; it is not all urban by any stretch of the imagination.

I think that your analysis was fair and balanced. As s Canadian though, I have noticed that whenever any foreigner does commentary on our weather it is always off! I've nesr Toronto and I would say that -10 Celsius is not unusual for weeks at a time in the daytime with -15 at night. However, I have experienced-60 Celsius or -75 Fahrenheit on the prairies, -40 to -50 often in Northern Ontario and -20 to -30 frequently! I work outside, and at -10 Celsius hardly even warrants my attention. I don't even pull out the heavy clothing for that!

The only way to compare temperatures is by using historical statistical averages; the average January temperatures in Toronto are -1°C by day and -7°C by night. Visitors almost always get confused because Canadian weather channels use a rather silly and misleading "Windchill Factor" that greatly exaggerates cold temperatures. All cities all over the world have wind, so it is a crazy way to report the weather. Visitors don't realise this, and leave thinking it was much, much colder than it actually was.

The beautiful thing about the Canadian currency is that u cannot counterfeit it.

Toronto isn't very cold anymore. Within a few kms from the Lake it can be practically snow free all winter long. Another 10 kms north, the temp drops 5-10 degrees, and progressively so as you go away from the large moderating effects of Lake Ontario. Here's another difference. NYC has 700 public elementary school buildings; Toronto has 450, for a population 1/3 NYC's. There are 200 Catholic ones in the Archdiocese of NY; 164 in Toronto -- tuition free -- fully funded by government! Toronto has an enormous number of neighborhood schools. There are other differences. Toronto is, in general, a much more livable city for every age group.

For those that care to read, this is the WHY Toronto and NYC are often compared. First, let me say that I'm an American who has been to both Toronto and New York City. Second, I work in statistics and deal with population stats all the time. Let's talk about population. There is no comparison. But no one is denying that if you measure the CSA, Toronto falls down the list. But when measuring a citie's population, you don't just measure the CSA, you measure the city proper. They're two different, and distinct terms of measurement. The GTA is not the city of Toronto, Chicagoland is not the city of Chicago. They are the broader and greater areas that makeup smaller municipalities that make up a larger picture. When someone asks what the population is of a specific city, they're not asking what the CSA is. They're not talking about the 50 to 60 miles of cities, towns and regions connected to that city. They're talking about the city proper. Toronto is the 4th largest city in North America. That is a fact. Now, when it comes to the greater CSA's, and the population that encompasses the different municipalities, and towns connected to that anchoring city, that's a different story. Now, here's the reason why New York and Toronto are often compared... Toronto is a big, massive City that showcases a New York vibe. That's what it is. I've been to Chicago, and you don't get the New York Vibe. I've been to Boston, Los Angeles, St Louis, Washington, Montreal, Vancouver, Houston, Dallas, and everywhere in between, and none of those cities feel like New York. Toronto has a very specific, almost Junior New York vibe to it. The skyscrapers, and its main center core of Dundas Square, although not nearly as large as Times Square, definitely has a New York vibe to it. The streets, and the energy of the city has that vibe to it. And because Toronto is the financial, cultural, entertainment, business, and sports capital of Canada, it gives you that New York Junior vibe to it. Often population of cities can be a dick measuring contest, and when it's not working in one's favour, they bust out the CSA. Sure, Toronto maybe 9th or 10th on the list when it comes to CSA, but when it comes to the city proper; the actual City itself, Toronto is the 4th largest in the entire continent. And that's coming from an American who studies this on a daily basis and presents the information you see online. I can assure you, driving in Toronto traffic, being in that City, and experiencing it on the many occasions I have, it absolutely compares to any of the larger cities we have here in the states. It's a very American city in many ways. It might be, the most New York feeling city, outside of New York itself. And that, is ultimately why there is often a comparison. It's about feeling.

NYC is obviously a larger, more vibrant city. But Toronto, in relation to the type of city it is, gives a mini NYC vibe, depending on where you are. And there are reasons for this. Clothing at 9:55. If you are downtown that is where many people live and work. The offices still require people to dress up, so people dress well. Toronto has a lot of people from different countries, who also like fashion. Plus there are three districts in Toronto where people can buy designer clothing. And they make a good income, so can afford it. As for clubs, women in Canada and the US dress similar.

I live in in TO and just came back from NYC. As a tourist, I say go to New York. The place truly is Metropolis. Toronto is changing and growing fast and is a great city to live, for sure. Biggest difference is green space. NYC has central park and that's it. Toronto is criss crossed with parks and ravines and rivers and has the Lakeshore and the islands where you can escape the noise and pollution of the city without leaving the city. Toronto is still filled with quiet leafy streets and if walk around long enough to, you'll see rrabbits and groundhogs and raccoons and squirrels and maybe even a coyote. No such thing in New York.

The drawing is not the same on the US dollar

The best part of Toronto is that it is NOT New York City. New York is New York. There's only one and we don't need another. Toronto is big and cleaner and overall less stressful. It's safer and friendlier and there are ravines throughout the entire city with deer, coyote, fox etc. That in itself makes Toronto unique. Bike paths are covered by trees and on a Sunday morning, the silence in these ravines makes you feel as if you are kilometres away from the city. If you haven't ventured out to these ravines, please check them out. Good video!

Canadian money at 13:47. We switched from paper to polymer bills about 10 years ago. Other countries in the world use polymer (plastic) bills. They outlast paper in terms of lifespan. Contrary to the video here, they do rip easily if there is a tear in the corner of the bill. That gets fixed with tape. The bills also melt if near a heat source. The different colors help differentiate the dollar value: 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100s.

Euros and British Pounds are polymer notes now, too. The bills wear better and are much cleaner than people. They stack better, too.

The US definitely recycle as well. Idk about NYC, but definitely in San Francisco and everywhere else I been there’s recycling bins. And NYC is known for its fashion and modeling industry, so I don’t think women’s fashion would be masculine. Maybe some people are like that.

I’ve heard that states like California and Colorado are very environmentally conscious. NY unfortunately is horribly not. As for the fashion, well I am Italian, so all I say is relative to my point of view 🤷‍♀️

News of shootings in Toronto make the rounds quite regularly, but statistically, it doesn’t have that many for a city of its size-considerably fewer than most US cities of similar size. Sure, there are cities around the world with fewer, but Toronto is handily dangerous, still one of the safest big cities on this side of the globe.

Toronto vs Chicago and Montreal vs New York.. I’ve been to all 4 and that’s what I believe.

I don't take the comparisons seriously because I live in Toronto and am not a tourist, but I have to say that Montreal and NYC are completely , utterly different cities on just about every level. I have been visiting Montreal, NYC and Chicago since the 1970s so am extremely familiar with all four cities. I've heard Montrealers make the NYC/Montreal comparison, and I scratch my head; to me it makes no sense. If I had to make one of those oversimplified generalisations, I'd say Montreal is to Toronto what Boston is to NYC.

The population of toronto is only 2 million because thats is the population of the city of toronto which is a small district in the the greator toronto area or GTA whose population is 6 million. Most people consider the GTA toronto.

Not a bad comparison, the only thing I will say is your off on the weather. Toronto gets the same weather as NYC and Chicago, just usually a day later and a few degrees difference. Toronto being so cold is a myth.

Thank you, I lived in NY (queens) for 10 years, now living in Toronto and the weather is pretty similar, with maybe just 3-4 degree variation. And NY get wayyy more snow storms/blizzards

I feel like Toronto is a mix of New York and London but New York is also a new London as well because of the history behind it it only makes since why they are so similar people make big topics out of nothing

The neighborhoods surrounding downtown Toronto can't be beat, and for nature in the middle of the city, Torontos ravines beat Central Park hands down.

I’ve been to both cities and they’re completely different except for the diversity and the food places, New York has a very specific vibe to it that Toronto doesn’t have. Toronto is basically just a chill major city that’s pretty simple tbh

A lot of people try to describe an unfamiliar place based on a place they already know. It's why they try to describe Toronto in terms of New York. It's overly simplistic and a little ridiculous. Is New York the Toronto of the US? Is Toronto the New York of Canada? Both viewpoints miss the mark. Each is the top city in their respective countries and each city strives to be a better version of itself. They're each different, each have their good/bad points, and both have their own identities.

Not true……Manhattan has Name streets below Houston St. Lower Manhattan, Soho and past 6th Ave. The other NYC boroughs have name streets as well.

Just a point...Toronto is the cultural and economic capital of english canada. Montreal is the cultural and commercial capital of french canada.

Interesting and valid (from a Torontonian), mostly. But I wish you'd taken a little more care before perpetuating myths about Toronto's cold weather. A quick Google search would have shown you that the average daily high only goes below freezing in one month, January (to -1). What you're thinking about are the short spells of a few days once or twice a winter, if at all, when an Arctic blast sends the temp down to -10 or even lower, occasionally a day or so of -20. They are terrible temperatures and, of course, to outsiders they stick in the memory, but they're not at all typical. Then there's the rest of the year, when it's not winter.

The reason Toronto has a better quality of life is because of Toronto's urban forest. Quiet, tree lined streets, hidden laneways, large parks, deep ravines and river valleys criss-cross the city. You can find peace and quiet and run into animals you wouldn't expect in the big city, like coyotes and deer. And we have the lake. Nothing compares to NYC, but Toronto has finally found its mojo and is developing a unique personality. About time, too.

I'm glad to hear it. Thanks for the comment. I'm currently reading "Delirious New York" by Rem Koolhass, one of the biggest architects of our time. He claims that the architecture of New York - particularly its grid structure and the skyscraper - is what brought it to have socio-economic-cultural features such as the endless research of money and efficiency. Toronto has a very different urban development, first reason of which is that it's not located in a limited territory such as the island of Manhattan. Interesting reading.

35 years ago I would have given a different answer preferring to live in Toronto. Not anymore. Not since the 1990's. Canada's big failure also being prepared to shut down and slow handling of the pandemic has also changed my desire from wanting to live in Toronto or in any other Big Canadian City for the foreseeable future.

You're wrong about US money - dollar coins actually do exist, they're just rarely used.

Last winter I bicycled every day but one in Toronto. The climate is getting milder thanks to "Global Warming". This July was too hot, however.

Liked the video but to be honest I have never understood comparing Toronto to New York. NY is just massively bigger and much older. I have never heard anyone from Toronto make the comparison, Toronto is just Toronto. NY started in 1640s Toronto realistically 1790s. In 1945 New York ranked as one of the most important cities in the world, Toronto a small city of 500k. NY is a mature city, Toronto is just getting started. Incidently lotsof people spend time outdoors in winter. You should try Regina Sask in winter at -44C.

I lived in NYC for more than 5 years and the reason why you see garbage piled up on the sidewalks is because there are no alleys. I guess the early planners knew alley ways would take up too much space for New York's population

Based on your videos and ‘Actionkid’s, it seems N.Y. has more green space. Parks and so on.

No, Toronto's Canada is Chicago because they have roughly the same population etc.

Toronto is Canada's NYC the same way NYC is the US's London and Berlin is Germany's Rome etc etc. Biggest cities in every country have that same thing in common, but Toronto is much different than NYC, you can feel when you're in Toronto and it doesn't feel like NYC. That isn't a bad thing either.

Only thing wrong about this video is that Toronto isn’t divide north south, it is boroughs just like New York does. Zoom in to a map

"Shootings" are so common in many American cities that they are not even logged in the same way as they would be in Canada. In 2023, you are more likely to be killed by being shot in the USA than dying of Covid. It's a whole different scale.

Toronto is an amazing city for sure but it’s not close to New York tbh. NYC is comparable to other mega cities like Tokyo, London, Paris, Shanghai etc. Toronto is more comparable to cities like Chicago

@@b-man443 Chicago and Toronto are roughly the same size and both have roughly the same amount of people living in both cities. NYC on the other hand has nearly 3x the population of Chicago and Toronto and is also bigger than both cities. Just because Toronto is the financial capital of Canada doesn’t mean it compares to New York. Also NYC is filled to the brim with iconic places to go sightseeing while Toronto and Chicago both aren’t really known for much other than the bean and the CN tower. NYC also has a huge subway network while again Chicago and Toronto have similar small subway networks

@@thepizzaelf Chicago is not the biggest place population wise, nor land wise in the country. Chicago is not the main tourist city of it's country. Toronto includes the GTA and if yopu include the GTA then you are definitely wrong in terms of tourist places, The CN Tower is the biggest but not the only one. Toronto is just straight up the biggest city in Canada with New York being the biggest in the US. Which makes them the go to spots for city folks in their respective countries. I guess in your eyes you are looking at the cities in their physical forms and comparing them like that. Me and many others compare the soul within the city as well as the stats of the city as compared to the rest in their own countries.

@@b-man443 I understand what you're trying to say but, the city of NYC has a pop of 8.5 million which is already more than the entire gta at 6 million and metro new york has a pop of over 20 million. The cities cannot be compared. NYC like London, Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai etc are mega cities that impact the world. Toronto isn't in that league at all. This is coming from a Canadian btw, so if anything i should be biased.

Is New York City the USA's Toronto? Metro Toronto was a borough system not unlike NYC (Toronto proper, York, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, East York), until about 25 years ago when Ontario premier Mike Harris made the controversial decision to amalgamate it all.
