Is this the sharpest classic 50mm film lens?

I think the Olympus 50mm 1.8 lens is the sharpest film lens. I have run a simple test.

In the last week or so I have shot my OM10 with this lens on and also the Minolta XG-M with the MD 50/1.7. It is hard to find fault with main brand 50s. I love them. Good shooting.

You are 100% correct and I Lobe my MD 50/1.7 as well. I have a few prime classic lenses but not the right adapters for them I want to get on for my Canon FD 50 and my Pentax 50 1.7 as well. Thanks for your comment.

I did some semi informal testing of several different 50’s from Olympus, Minolta and Nikon. 2 lenses were 1.4 versions, one was a 1.8 and the last an F2. None of them were great wide open but all were equally fabulous by 2.8. It was hard to tell them apart.

Thanks for your comment. And yes you are right I think in time as I test mine I think I will find the same.

I have a few Nikon AIS F1.8, F1.4 and a couple of Canon F1.4 FD lenses ( the later SSC and MC ones ). They are all sharp at f2.8 and smaller. I don't have an Olympus simply because I never had an Olympus film camera, although I do have a couple of their 40 series fixed lens range finders. I can't imagine Olumpus being any less sharp or otherwise to Nikon and Canon. I do however, have a 45mm Contx-G Planar F2 for my G2 camera and a Zeiss Planar 50mm F2 ZM ( this lens is actually not a 50mm but close to 44 mm, even though Zeiss claims it is a 50mm ), and both the Contax G2 Planar and the 50mm Zeiss Planar are in a different league to the others. They are razor sharp even wide open @ F2, and by f2.8 the corners are almost as sharp as the center. The latest £5000.00+ Leica 50mm Apo-Summicron is again sharper than any lens that I have including my Summicron F2, but at that price I would expect it too. The fact is that I don't actually rate sharpness very high on my list of priorities, as most photographers seem to do so these days. There is more to a lens performance and rendering than just sharpness. I actually love the classic rendering of my 50mm Summicron DR. The older classic Leica lenses score very high when it comes to the quality of rendering.

What a fantastic comment thank you. You are correct in saying its not about sharpness because there are so many different dynamics in a lens like colour rendition.
