Is this the new shape builder tool for Affinity Designer?

There are two things that are keeping a huge segment of designers and artists from jumping off Adobe Illustrator and moving to Affinity Designer. Those two things are a Shape Builder tool equivalent, and Image Trace.
Now I cannot speak to the latter of those two (and truthfully, I can only speculate on either), but I have a sneaking suspicion Affinity Designer already has in place the beginnings of.a shape builder tool.
In version 1.9 of Designer, Affinity released the new Contour tool, and when you use it in combination with the boolean compound tools, it creates some really interesting results. I first saw this in the Affinity Designer v1.9 launch video, but I didn't think much of it at the time. But then I saw a type designer named Mario De Meyer doing some really amazing things with the tool, and it inspired me to make this video.
Check out Mario's work:

    I think that it is meaningful to this discussion that the old Serif DrawPlus had both a Trace tool (called "Auto Trace") and a Shape Builder tool (called, um, "Shape Builder Tool"). Even though the Affinity products don't exactly copy all the features of the earlier Serif products, they tend to, and often are just slow to catch up. For example, Affinity Publisher is going to have to go some to catch up to everything Serif PagePlus could do. So, basically, I think you're right about both tools coming to Affinity Designer, hopefully soon (2.0!!).

    I notice using this tool also can bypass affinity’s division and union bug. When you divide complex shapes, then try to union, affinity messes up the curves. However if you contour the curves with 0.1 radius (ie negligible) union magically works like it should!

    Love the contour tool ... it is a very powerful tool. Works well with compounds and also works well with symbols and creating multiple symbols with the contour compounds. Pity the appearance feature doesn't work well such as adding strokes etc as well as gradients and blending them with all those combos. Nor can you compound a symbol set but the symbols contours are all still active. Bake appearance for the contours is also quite useful and also using them as a stroke only design. @@xzenor To be honest, I’m a firm believer in the fact that Adobe’s vector distortion tools are just pixel manipulations with a bad-ass vector trace engine batting clean-up in the background. When you erase Adobe vectors, for example, the shape becomes pixels, the pixel eraser removes the pixels and tells the vector trace engine exactly what it did, the engine swiftly retraces the pixels taking the eraser tools self reporting into account, and the lines and control nodes are recreated faithfully in a matter of nanoseconds. I would like to see Affinity come up with something comparable. I still say they would be best served by following the Adobe Capture approach and creating a free-standing specialized software app that could be refined to perfection, and then be incorporated into the Affinity family as a solution that can open externally, bend vectors, and send the results back to the app that invoked it.

    This is cool. You can also switch each element in the compound group to have a different boolean operator, and you can have a separate contour on them too. That said, the contour tool has nothing in common with the shape builder tool, the compound group implements some of it's features. Also, though it's a different workflow, but you can ctrl-click the divide tool and it'll split your selection to overlapping pieces which is technically (mathematically) the same as in the shape builder tool. You can assemble you pieces from there, sure, it's a bit more of a hassle, but still.

  • @DaveConrey

    @DaveConrey

    3 жыл бұрын

    My point though isn’t that the contour tool is identical to a shape builder, but rather that Affinity is experimenting with how shapes interact, and it is my speculation that this tool is something that they discovered during their Process of building their own shape builder equivalent, which I speculate will be revealed in version 2.0.

I don't rent my pencils and inks or my hammer when I renovate.. I felt in love with the series as much because of their business philosophy then because they've kept it quite intuitive and easy for folks like us who migrate from Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.. My guess is that it will be a paid upgrade, especially considering that Affinity has been offering these extended stints of half-price apps. Perhaps it was strategic because they knew people would be needing to pay again when 2.0 comes out, so they cut the cost in times of need to make the jump easier on people. I'm all-in on the upgrade cost, even if it does mean paying full price again. Knowing what little I do about the company though, my guess is that it's still only going to be a fraction of the full price cost.

    I used to use Photoshop as my main tool for design (broadcast design) And then moved over to illustrator and it was about 50-50 where I could make vectors in illustrator and cut and paste into photoshop. I also did most of my print work in illustrator. A few years ago I moved to Affinity Designer which has become my tool of choice. I recently did a project where after building everything in Affinity Designer I found out I had to deliver templates to the client. That became a problem. Importing into illustrator from Affinity isn't great. Its fine illustrator to Affinity, but Affinity to Illustrator is awful. I also had to rent illustrator for the month just to do this. I haven't looked at illustrator since CS5 so was a little lost with all of the changes and additions. Unfortunately the world isn't ready to move on from Adobe.This was the first time this happened but it probably won't be the last.

    @@DaveConrey I tried a bunch of ways. EPS.PDF.Cut and paste. I needed to have a type backplate that kept turning to bitmap upon import. I ended up deleting the type in affinity and importing the layers as eps (import layers was also weird) I then had to adjust my layers in illustrator and reset the type. The type was in a kidney shape and of course illustrator had moved that particular type tool, so I had a struggle finding it. After rebuilding the first layout I was able to cut and paste the type shape to the other two versions I had to edit and reset the type that way.

    What all the miss is the tools Flash or Animate has, you can create amazing shapes super fast with less steps. The biggest problem I see with Affinity Design is some tools are odd to use and the export is a nightmare if you try to share your design with others. I found the solution to create design in Infinity Design and export to Adobe Affect Effects so all elements are on it's own layers. But, again. Affinity Design And Affinity Photo are super fun to use with miles ahead of Adobe, but again, some tools are odd to use and requires a totally re-learn what things are and do. My point is, Affinity needs to STOP re-venting the wheel and concentrate with new tools but using same commonsense of other applications so the learning curve is not huge. Every time I try to use Affinity Design, I end up jumping to Animate or Illustrator because functions are different. Where is this tool? where is that? and time is money, so I just jump back to what I use and what is compatible to other studios. Yes, the biggest problem is EXPORT not exporting layers and looks to other formats that we can use on other applications. With Illustrator, I can simple export all the layers in a PDF file and anyone can open them with all format and styles in place. Ready to animate or else.

  • @DaveConrey

    @DaveConrey

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don't think Affinity is trying to reinvent the wheel. I think they're trying to improve upon tools that they see flawed in other apps. That's subjective of course, but they believe they're doing the right thing. And with that comes a learning curve. If none of us had any experience with Photoshop or Illustrator, we wouldn't be looking at Affinity sideways for doing things different, but our bias keeps us from considering that is more than one way to do things, and sometimes it takes a left-turn in our process to find that out.

    @@DaveConrey Yes, I understand you, but I think they miss a lot things when comes to UI and UX. But for sure, like I said. Affinity is miles away in UI and UX then Adobe. Many things are just nonsense in Affinity products because of rights or else. For sure, they are in the right direction and I try as much I can to use affinity products. When I can. Yes, there are a lot things in Affinity products that need to improve and they should follow others that to accomplish things. Example: The layering system in Affinity is nonsense, just crazy, but there some great stuff in there too. The gradient tool in Affinity is amazing, but there are some crazy things that does not work there too. The Shadows, styles, etc are kind from the earl version of PowerPoint. They need to improve what other software are doing. Anyway, Affinity Products are amazing for what is does and super cheap too. Until the fix the Export system and try to re-invent the wheel to do simple tasks, people will keep using Adobe for professional work. At the end, the tools don't matter much and yeas the content you create. And if you can not share your content to other professionals you are stack inside a bubble. When comes to great UX design, things makes sense and you know what you are getting. In Affinity you have great tools but you have to play with it and memorized new forms in how things works. Affinity has the same problem as Open Source software, it seams like new people jumps in to finish a code. It seams like a totally different software engineer worked on the Contour tool and another on the Filters and layering system. Why you have to make a decision first if you need a project with transparent background first? This like this is all over Affinity.
