I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

    I agree 100%. I always have a swim jig tied on. I use it for flipping, pitching, swimming, wood, rock, grass, everything. I have, but I don't really use casting jigs flipping jigs, etc. But I prefer to just use the swim jig in place of all of those.

    Same here. I will tie on a football jig if I’m in a clear, deep water reservoir. A football jig seems to get hung up less in rock.

    Swim jigs are the best lol. To get the powerbait grass pig to move like the old havoc model you can dip the tail in boiling water to soften it up. That or the skinny dipper are imho the only swimbait for swim jiggin. Luckily I scooped a nice supply of havoc’s when they closed out lol.

    It’s the shape of the tail…they are both about the same. The zoom swimmin fluke has the tail too😉. It gives the jig that side to side roll that they can’t handle!

    Interesting….were you just doing a straight, standard retrieve??? I thought that was a “no-no”, when jig fishing. I’m fishing Headwaters down here in FL for the first time, which has become as legendary as Togo and Okeechobee, and like with 99% of FL lakes, the water is tannic, shallow, and EXTREMELY warm, given we’ve had no rain the past 2mo, and 95% temp’s the past two weeks. I had to come in off the water today by 12p….I couldn’t take the heat anymore. I think you pretty much answered my question in the video, but I’m seeing a LOT of fish, but it’s still really slow right now. Nothing is hitting a swim jig….at least not the bluegill dirty jigs model with a green pumpkin Rage Menace. I’m thinking with that tannic water, maybe I should try a black/blue, or maybe even the golden shiner color, and put on a trailer with a little more thump. Like you said in the comments, when you have a lake inundated with vegetation, a chatterbait becomes a high-maintenance disaster. I ran into Roland Martin as we were crossing paths from hole-to-hole….and they weren’t doing much either (he was guiding), and they were using shiners. I’m hoping that these fish aren’t tucked up under the mats, because I’m just not into flipping. But, I think that may be happening as the day gets hotter and the sun is directly over the water. The only thing I caught anything on was a 3” SP Pointer (mat shad), working it like a jerk bait, but with all the hydrilla, I don’t like throwing it…I prefer to stick with something that will come through the grass better. *Anyway….I wanted to see if you had any suggestions?* Would be a bummer if I could have at least one good day on a spot as highly regarded as Headwaters. Great video!

    Matt, something that I saw you doing in this video, that I can't seem to be able to do at all, is pitch/flip/skip a bait and then regular cast it without ever making a reel adjustment. I know you're a pro w/ good gear, not me with a $99 Lews combo, but how do you do that without going from free spool to adding tension? I'd be in birdnestville for sure. Very applicable video for me in the tannin waters of Northern MI.

    Question as I don't fish swim jigs. Why would it come through vegetation any better than a spinnerbait or paddle tail on a swimbait jig head? I understand the concept behind the shape of the head, but they all have exposed hooks. Do you fish these when specifically targeting smallies?

    What the hell is going on with the first 8 comments. AI run amok. Everything but the Nigerian prince and hot Ukranian singles. I should throw this bait more, but find that bass in Lanier like things dragged on the bottom, so I have more confidence in those baits. Lastly, congrats Matt on your Core line of products. Why choose a swim jig over a bladed jig? Bladed jigs have come a long way in having the same versatility as a swim jig. I would think the thumping of the blade would be a great attractor for the bass.

    Three observations watching your video very closely. One, you did not seem to vary your retrieve speed or shake. Two, when you cast the jig it looked like you had your rod tip high at start of cast and lower it as you brought in jig. Three, it seemed like you basically ended your retieve while the jig was still out in the water just picking it up out of the water with line out. Could you explain how or why you determined that was the right approach? There was no start/stop or pumping of your rod that i saw. What is the purpose in high rod tip to start and then lowering it. Do you basically just fish a jig from the fall and then burn it back to recast?

  • @MattStefanFishing

    @MattStefanFishing

    2 ай бұрын

    As i mentioned in the video i was deflecting off lots of cover so no need to pump rod. I lower my rod to place the bait in the water gently as possible. Strike zone was first half of the cast so i reeled in second half
