Huh, they could have used a bog standard 4x4 diesel Ranger with no rear end tray/tub and built their entire custom chariot on that base vehicle including Lift, bull bar, snorkel, rear canopy etc etc. This coulda saved $30ish k of crud that was removed anyway.

I suggest you consider a wrap for both the car and canopy. It keeps the setup looking great after bush touring and keeping clean is very easy. We only wrapped the car and not the slide on camper. The difference after 5 months touring was very noticeable. Next time I will get both done. Keep up the good work!

Any wind that thing will shake like hell, what puts me off these tents is the lack of shelter getting in and out. Having spent a few nights in a rooftop when the wind is blowing I am looking at an alternative. This great rig would be perfect towing a good camper trailer and you make them. The tare weight is now 3000kg, we have a GVM upgrade to 3500kg. Originally able to tow 3500kg, however, due to GCM of 6000kg, the most we could tow is now 2500kg. Our main priority was to make this a media/recovery vehicle that would self-sufficient expedition ready. Towing was not a priority as our other vehicles are better suited for towing our vans.

Thankyou for the cost breakdown and parts used for a perfect build. Any work coming for extra power hauling the extra weight?
Looks nice, you could have added cargo bars to those flip up doors for your smaller items like the trax and the jack so you could have mounted your solar to the top of the cab!
Owning a rig like this is my dream. I probably won't fit as many luxuries (I mean who wants a coffee machine and a toaster in the bush?), but that ARB kit, the canopy and a decent rooftop tent, all on arguably the best looking UTE currently available in the market. Maybe one day I can save up enough to build me something similar, until then I will make the best of my stock fourby going where I can with a swag and a cooler box for the weekend.
I like the orange on black with the drawers n stuff.

Nice work looks cool Can we see what the weight is full loaded to work out gvm Also what about a wagon comparison to see the cost of setting one up as a tourer maybe a cruiser dual cab to see the cost and the gvm so people towing vans etc can understand gcm and what the vehicles actually carnt legally carry when van is hooked up. Great work

One of these days I hope I will be able to understand why people still fit chest-type fridges on heavy drop slides, in lieu of the more sensible idea of a conventional front-opening fridge. It is fixed in position and requires no heavy slide...and stuff inside is MUCH easier to access. My Silverado came with a drop down fridge slide and aluminium cage. The 60 litre Engel + slide + cage was removed and weighed-in @ 100kg. I junked the whole lot and replaced it with an upright Engel (I got a cheap 55 litre unit off Gumtree) which weighs 23kg. I'm hoping you'll tell us how much that Ranger weighs with all that stuff on it (including passengers etc when fully loaded) and see how that compares with the GVM.

My reasoning would be securing of items in the fridge and chest style fridges are more efficient. Upright fridges while easier to access allow the contents to move around a hell of a lot more especially on rough tracks, where as chest style you can tetris every thing in to keep stuff from moving around. The second reason is efficiency, chest style fridges use less power than uprights which is important if you are running off batteries. Chest fridges dont dump out all the cold air every time you open the door like an upright does, so no having to cool down the air again. You can fill a chest fridge to the brim which you just cant do with an upright, this means greater thermal mass which easier to keep cold once its at temperature. I am sure there are other benefits to uprights, but for me the benefits of the chest fridge out weigh the cons
