Is This The Lightweight EMTB Motor Of The Future? | Fazua Factory Tour

Спорт

A key innovation in the world of electric mountain bikes over the past decade has been the Fazua Drive, arguably one of the pioneers of the lightweight EMTB. In this video, MTB journalist turned EMTB pioneer Steve Jones takes a tour of the Fazua factory to check out their super-compact lightweight Ride 60 motor and battery unit.

I have to say I am really impressed! Mostly of that how well integrated and protected is the motor. But the battery seems a bit small. there are now 900Wh battery e-mtbs. I guess 60Nm from the motor is about right.

A very interesting addition to eMTB motors and more competition is always a good thing. Thought the Fazua 50 was a bit weak compared to other motors, I hope this feels more powerful/usable. Good video!!!

Interesting components design, lighter e-bikes. On the other hand, the range on the introduced battery is simply not enough for hilly countryside expeditions, even for normal multi-hour hill rides outside high mountains of around 50 km. Maybe for the trail spins? I would definitely again choose a full-power Bosch setup of the last generation with a proper battery, and I don't have to worry about not getting where I want to go. Even with the sacrifice of the high weight.

Can't help but think of a recent Sam Pilgrim video where he lamented wishing for a jump bike, that had a small lightweight battery/motor so he could do tailwhips and other stunts that require a lighter weight bike - and most importantly, so he could also ride back up to the top and do it all over again......Hey Fazua / Porsche - are you listening? I can definitely imagine Sam Pilgrim on a Porsche Jump Bike.......

I ride a Fazua 50 on a Trek e-caliber. 80% I ride it without motor like a normal mtb. I only take the motor & battery to help on longer, steeper, rougher trails. Still manage 40km and 1000m D+ with 70% of the 250Wh battery left! The philosophy of the Fazua 50 is to help you ride, not to replace your efforts like others motos. Following the arms race of bigger torque and battery will have them endup with a me-too product. I liked the idea that light emtb was for people who don't want to ride an electric motocycle in the woods but still enjoyed pedling with some assistance when needed.

For me Fazua had an advantage of being able to transform EMTB into MTB in seconds. How it looks alike in such case? We know, that the motor is not removable, but maybe they have something like a clutch or something, to detach the motor when a battery is not there? Or maybe this is fully integrated system without such possibility? Please elaborate on that a bit more!

Very interesting video Maybe they have moved away from the removable motor because, having bought an ebike, people tend not to do that. It was a solution for a problem that didn't really exist? So now they want to be the best of the lightweight and compact offerings - which I suspect will be a massive growth segment because it can be used in all sorts of bikes, including road & gravel. I like the max 60 NM sweet spot because it gives you that punch when you occasionally need it for most types of riding, however I don't think it's enough for many MTB riders? I don't really notice the weight of my Carbon Turbo Levo once I am riding it. I remember before getting it I had all sorts of plans for how I was going to shed some weight off it and then after the first ride I realised the weight was a zero issue. I can ride all day on the 700 battery if I use low levels but I have the massive punch for the very rare occasion I need (want) it. A few additional kgs is the price I pay for a bike that can do everything I need. Another problem with eMTB weight obsession is that you start to fit the lightest components which means - very expensive and/or not quite strong or durable enough. So in reality the lightweight EMTB market is limited to lightweight riders with deep pockets

Looks nice and compact, when you have a company like Porsche investing, it looks good, however they may push the company in a direction that suits Porsche. As for his review of the motor, well, he's going to say it's good, enough power and battery life, a punchy motor, because let's face it, they never say anything bad.

Fine and dandy with reducing motor size but what is needed is the bike industry to concentrate on developing the sealed gear box and do away with derailleurs completely, this technology should have been standard 10 years ago and by now super lightweight and on most every bike...I can only surmise companies make money by putting out more derailleurs as they know it is an easily damaged part so needs replaced making money. Sealed gearboxes have far more importance than this fad for creating lighter motors, it will always be limited by current battery technology and the duration of such batteries...Lightweight ebikes are probably at their zenith and this continued fascination with small weight margins on motors is IMHO really going backwards...

Agreed, I wouldn't mind the extra weight and lower drivetrain efficiency of a gearbox on an e-bike. Happy with my chunky 2020 Aluminum Turbo Levo Comp. The only reason I would upgrade would be the integrated gearbox. With battery power always being on-board, I wouldn't mind electronic shifter for it either. Something that would give the impression of being able to shift under load to the user, but the motor momentarily cuts power like a quick shifter on a motorcycle.

Why is the Fazua controller so bad? It’s plastic junk. They need to rethink it and create a new one made of metal that works on bearings or something. It’s on some pretty pricey bikes. It’s amazing how bad the quality of it is. I hope they come up with something more substantial or just go with plus and minus buttons and offer replacements to those with the plastic controller.

Expensive weak motors and small batteries. Exciting tech. My Bafang 29'er has twice the N-m and over twice the battery capacity and less than 1/2 the cost. Production ebike tech is for suckers or those that didn't go to engineering school. Of course you will try to sell it to the uninitiated. Good luck finding replacement parts. CANBUS proprietary controllers. The tech hustle continues. German's are the masters at fleecing the public with expensive tech. BMW is the flagship for poor reliability and therefore non existent resale value. The ignorant public are easy pickings.
