Is This The Korean Civic Si?? Yes And No - 2020 Kia Forte GT

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Like the GTI is the benchmark in America for a hot hatch, the Civic Si is the benchmark when it comes to compact performance sedans on a budget. The budget part is important, because Kia neatly avoids too many direct Civic Si comparisons by making the new 201 horsepower Forte GT so inexpensive. The result? The Forte GT is the bargain sports sedan to beat....

The Civic Si has been the benchmark for compact performance sedans on a budget, now there's a Kia for that. The new Forte GT. Kia has managed to so drastically undercut the price of the Civic Si, that a fully-loaded 2020 Forte GT is actually *less* than a base Civic Si. In a segment where performance is just as important as affordability, the Forte GT might even be seen ad the new benchmark. It may not have the finesse of the Civic Si, but for the price you'll get features not offered on the Civic at any price, a better infotainment system, longer warranty, and... a bit more personality. The real win for the Forte GT is of course the price tag, because it neatly answers all the questions from GTI/GLI/Si fans. "Is it as refined?" No, but it's way less expensive. Is it as powerful as a GTI? No, but it's way less expansive. Does it have a limited slip? No, but it's way less expensive. That's the best argument to be had in the auto biz.

I'm not super impressed with the way the 2020 Kia Forte GT looks, the headlights look like bug eyes to me. Perhaps more importantly, the dual clutch transmission in the GT does ride & feel rough. Even Sofyan, a huge fan of Kia/Hyundai, admitted that when driving it. That will be difficult to live with everyday. Keep in mind that performance is more than the amount of horsepower, amount of torque, and 0-60 time. Most of us drive in real roads where we have to follow speed limits, not the race track. If anything, driving a fast car slow is incredibly frustrating. For my money, I would buy a 2020 Toyota Corolla SE sedan as my performance sedan. Yes it's not the fastest car but it handles incredibly well. Professional reviewers have stated that it handles & drives even better than the 2020 Mazda 3. Best would be to pair it with the available manual transmission with auto rev matching but Toyota's new CVT with the physical first gear is awesome too. Plus the 2020 Corolla SE is cheaper & more reliable than the Forte GT and the Civic SI. Win win.

In fact VW's 4yr/50K bumper to bumper warranty is not the "shortest warranty of the bunch." It's longer than most manufacturers' standard 3year/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. Furthermore, it's coupled with two years of service and maintenance on every vehicle sold, a benefit that amounts to something over $600 for every buyer. Balance that certain savings against the potential but very unlikely probability that a buyer will have a warranty claim in years five and six of ownership and the average consumer is far better off with the shorter warranty and free service and maintenance.

Yet, for me it’s not the fun experience that manual enthusiasts love. Especially in stop and go traffic. Because of this review, I will definitely check out the Forte GT. The only turn off I had was that big info entertainment screen in the middle of the dash. It sticks out way too much. I wish it was built in more to the dash. Other than this, I’m drawn to the consistent performance of the car and all the important safety features this car has to offer at a much lower price than Honda. I do, however, like the styling of the Honda better than the Forte. Again, thank you for this excellent review. How the hell do you cram so many words in one breath? Take care.

When I saw the Kia at this trim level including ventilated seats it was love at first sight. This is a sporty car with reasonable performance. I also drive a BMW x3 M40I which shocked me the first time I drove it. No cross over should be that fast but BMW has even faster toys. I drive the Kia for work and gets great mileage in smart mode( 37 to 40 mpg on highway). Engine/ transmission are a little rough on start up in the morning but settle in after the engine is up to temperature. Handling is very good with a low center of gravity and good tires. I had a manufacturer’s incentive when I bought it so it was in the 22k price range. For the price it’s a steal.

Coming from someone who drives a GTI and a KIA Sorento I have to say that KIA once again hits the ball out of the park with the new Forte, especially the GT model. If I won a raffle that gave me a choice among the vehicles Alex cites in the video I'd probably opt for the GLI based on my long experience with the GTI and its superb EA888 engine. But I'm not a recent college grad laboring under a massive student loan debt in what is (and will be for quite some time) an uncertain economic climate. Nor am I a family breadwinner with a budget that makes a several thousand dollar price difference a major issue. And for those and many other consumers the Forte's generous dose of features, enjoyable driving dynamics, and extensive bumper-to-bumper and power train warranties make a compelling case for the Forte.

  • @stephenhendricks103

    4 жыл бұрын

@@lindagonzalez9691 Nonsense. In fact, every manufacturer applies firm rules to warranty claims. KIA and Hyundai are no different from any other manufacturer. And if you have any reliable evidence to the contrary, feel free to post it. You won't because it doesn't exist. If you want to criticize KIA/Hyundai's 10 year power train warranty, though, you might want to focus on the fact that very few problems arise in ANY automotive brand in the transmission and engine over a 10 year/100K length of time. In fact, a number of dealers of various brands in my area offer LIFETIME warranties on their new vehicles' engines and transmissions. Since such warranties typically apply only to the original purchaser of a new vehicle and so few problems every arise, either a 10 year or a lifetime warranty is basically a marketing gesture. A somewhat more valuable warranty from a consumer point of view is the bumper-to-bumper warranty offered by manufacturers. But even in those cases a 3 year or 5 year warranty is a good bet for a manufacturer. Again, they're seldom transferable to a second owner and even if they are the vast majority of owners will never have the need to redeem a warranty claim over the period of their ownership. If anything, long warranties are a sign of (a) a manufacturer's confidence in their product and (b) a way to counter worries of risk averse consumers who don't realize that just about every new vehicle will run reliably and without the need for a warranty claim for the entire length of ownership. Reliability concerns are widespread among consumers primarily because a new car is such a major expenditure but a warranty, like any insurance policy, is a far better bet for those who sell them than for those who buy them. If that weren't the case, insurance wouldn't be sold.

Resale value is a frequent argument in discussions of the value of some vehicles -- Toyotas and Hondas on the high end and KIAs on the low end. But here's an example that doesn't apply directly to the vehicles reviewed here but may be instructive. In 2012 I purchased a KIA Sorento. The price I paid was over $6000 less than the best offer I received for a comparably equipped Toyota Highlander. Six years later I traded the Sorento for a new model (same top trim). The dealer gave me a price for my trade-in that was about $600 less than the KBB estimate for a comparable (trim and condition) 2012 Highlander trade-in, the resale champ in the category. Simple arithmetic indicates I saved about $5400 on the pair of transactions. The keys, of course, were (a) substantial savings on the original purchase price; (b) keeping the Sorento for six years rather than trading it within a couple of years of its original purchase; and (c) the significant improvement in KIA's resale value over the last decade. Personally, I don't buy vehicles based on my expectation that it will hold its value, especially over a period of five years or more. Vehicles are almost universally depreciating assets and the longer they're owned the less difference in resale value of comparable vehicles. P.S. This comment is aimed at contradicting your post. I suspect that you're correct that the "price difference might end up being less than it seems." But the greater the initial savings and the longer you keep a vehicle, the less it matters.

@@stephenhendricks103 In general I agree; resale value is overrated. But with enthusiast cars, buyers seem to be picky. I happen to agree that Alex provides the most comprehensive, thorough, and detailed reviews on the net and his inclusion of comparisons with rival vehicles in the same market category is especially enlightening. That's why I support this channel. Having said that, though, I find several other reviewers well worth watching, a group that includes Tom Voelk's "Driven" channel, the reviews from Savage Geese, MIcah Musio's perspectives on his own channel as well as KBB, and Sofyan Bey's perspective on Redline. As far as Sofyan's "profanity," I have to say it's pretty rare and typically "beeped." Everybody wants a Honda Civic Si, but most of the people that are buying new “faster” compact sedans don’t want a manual Honda Civic Si with no leather/heated/ventilated seats. Back then, the Acura Integra, RSX, EL, CSX, TSX, ILX, and even the coupè Honda Prelude filled the gap somewhat: a more comfortable, just as fun and reliable, affordable Honda Civic Si with an automatic transmission option. There is a legitimate reason why many owners of the Preludes, Integras, EL, RSX, CSX, and TSX still love their cars even decades later. Nowadays, with Acura ILX base prices soaring and new redesigns absent, the Kia Forte GT and Hyundai Elantra N-line (former known as the Elantra Sport) gladly take its place. Hyundai and Kia reliability is still a bit of a gamble for now, but the trends point upwards and away from the tragic catastrophic engine fires/recalls of years past. The low MSRP, value proposition, and 10 year warranty seal the deal. As a value oriented brand, Nissan especially, is feeling the sting. Mitsubishi’s Lancer got squeezed out of the market too along with Ford, Chevorlet, and Dodge’s sedans. I hope Honda releases a new Civic Si with a manual and an automatic transmission option with leather/heated/ventilated seats soon. And I hope Acura slashes the prices on their ILX to more competitive and reasonable levels. Because the Kia Forte GT and Hyundai Elantra N-Line could use some stronger competition. But then again, sales in this segment are so pitifully low, it might not even be worth fighting the battle anymore. First the affordable compact sports coupe’s died in the 2000’s, next the affordable compact sports sedans soon follow. Now that’s just heartbreaking. 😔

Alex, I enjoy your reviews, but you have a big error here when talking about the specs on the manual transmission model. The MT version does include many of the features you can only get on the GT2 package with the DCT, including the sunroof, Harmon Kardon stereo, blind spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist. That's why the MT model costs more than the DCT, unless you add the GT2 package to it. That said, I gave this car a long look before opting for a Civic Si. For me a MT was non-negotiable, and when Honda added adaptive cruise to the 2020 Si, that clinched it for me, and I couldn't be happier. But if I were looking for a car with a DCT, I would definitely consider the Kia GT2. Although, when I was shopping I found it annoying that nearly all the GT2s on the lots came with the summer tires. I understand why some would want them, but living in the NE USA I would have no interest in the added expense of buying all-seasons on my own, or buying and switching out with winter tires twice a year.

For a family man who desperately wants a small fun to drive car, but knows that I've got a family and gear to fit, I pay a LOT of attention to trunk size. The Forte's trunk is larger than a Camry's for example. And while I generally prefer sedans to smoke and mirror hatchbacks that end up being less cargo-friendly, I am curious how this compares to the Hyundai GT N-line hatchback. Same engine I think, no? It is also available with a manual transmission. Furthermore, in a world where new cars are heavy on infotainment tech/controls, light on physical buttons/controls, I continually hear that Hyundai/Kia have their systems dialed to be user-friendly above everyone else. Also I found it interesting and not surprising that Hyundai/Kia, according to Matt Moran Motors, do ventilated seats really well--better than Matt's wife's Mercedes apparently! If this is all true, it seems to me in fact that the Hyundai/Kia value proposition has stepped beyond a simple dollar and cents calculation, (we're cheaper and have better warranties) and are now producing vehicles that are actually better from a day to day livability point of view as well.

@@stevenr1354 That's not what I am referring to. The forte GT has an optional sport exhaust which has a throaty growl and has lots of pops and bangs. Probably similar to the I30N set up but it sounds a little different

A C+ for cabin noise is disappointing. It's a shame they couldn't add a little extra sound proofing in the top level trim. That would add weight, so perhaps an extra 10hp/10lb/ft.... :)

Weird, my manual Forte GT has a sunroof, blind spot monitoring, wireless phone charger, Harmon Kardon radio 8 speaker with a powered subwoofer, and rear parking warning, . Alex must not have realised that you do get a partial premium package with the manual. Just not heated/cooled/power/full pleather seats or adaptive cruise control.

Honda has a dual clutch transmission for their Acura line. It’s proven to be a pretty good transmission. I wonder why they don’t use it in Honda models
