What Frieren the mage is known for: Being 1/4th of Himmel's party. How Frieren spends the vast majority of her days: Quietly browsing magic shops. Collecting grimoires that have Flamme's name on them. Harvesting crops.

About knowlegeable people not recognising Frieren, imagine this , we all know who Charles Darwin is, where I live in England there are even a few statues of him, if it wasn't for photography and the fact that I've seen his face in decent resolution with colour I wouldn't be able to pick the man out from a crowd of faces. We remember and identify human faces pretty well, translating a rusted statue to a real person in your mind would be exceedingly difficult. (and everyone who looks at this post and thinks "I don't know who Charles Darwin is" proves another unspoken point)

But the top mages are not average people. Most of them probably dont care about history, but at least mages like the guy looking at Frieren mana should deduce who she is. He seems like a scholar, at least a comment like "an elf mage? Could she be... No, impossible... But what if..." Among scholars, at a magic city, someone should have make a big deal about an elf mage with twintails. Specially since she spent a lot of time in a library

How do they not know? It's been eighty years and this organization has only been around for fifty, and even if they recognize the name I'm not sure they'll recognize her face immediately. Even Lugner who fought her before needed some time to remember her.

But she’s an elf, how many elf named “frieren” are there? I would understand if they just saw an elf mage and didn’t recognize it was frieren but the girl at the counter who sign her up should know her name and have amples context clue to know who she is exactly and inform the higher up or someone else that there’s a legendary mage taking the exam this year. That old guy at the counter overheard frieren talk about holy emblem so he should hear fern call her “frieren sama” as they walk past each other too and given that he know the emblem he must know that to own one you must be a long lived species who’s extremely proficient in magic, not that the ear wasn’t enough of a giveaway but still. The only way for it to make sense is that he just doesn’t know the name frieren in general, which is highly unlikely because. 1. He seems to live in an era when the demon is recently defeated 79-80 year old, so there’s definitely a buzz around that 2. He’s a magician, even after the defeat of the demon king frieren also help in development of zoltrak and scholarly work for a time so she should be a celebrity there. I can’t imagine he lived his whole life being in 2 of the most likely demographic to be involved with frieren and her influence but that name and appearance still didn’t trigger any kind of memmory or response.

I think everyone knows frieren the mage of the hero's party, but they don't know what she looks like. She's so low-key she doesn't even introduced herself as a hero. Heroes feats are often exaggerated some would not even know she's an elf so they would assume she's dead.

There are statues of the heroes party around I woulda thought there would be one in Auberst or at least Frieren. Being now the most famous mage in the world and considering it's a notable city, the most notable magic city and in this world and the only other place where you can take the exam besides the Capital

@@Scyon13 Frieren isint famous. She has been hidden from public eye for most of her life. Because Flamme told her so. Only public thing she has done was beat the Demon KIng. And from party that defeated Demon King, she isint even the most famous. Himmel was the hero of party.

I feel like she was proud of the holy emblem when she first got it cuz it's like a proof she worked really hard to get where she is but nobody knows what it means anymore, that's why she feels kinda sad when Himmel and the others don't recognize it and why she's apprehensive about obtaining a new one when it'll lose it's meaning just as quickly.

Frieren is everyone who has suffered from group projects in school.

Not like the rest of the party wasn't contributing as much as Frieren though. We know Eisen was a monster safe to say Himmel and Heiter were strong as well.

She screams "I don't wanna be a doll forever!!" To Frieren, Fern was born yesterday and the girl already looks more developed than her xD

They don't have internet so they won't recognise her, most of them may know her name but they don't know what she's like

I don't think Frieren let her go scout by herself because she felt she was strong enough to see how strong she was. It was because she has good judge of what she can and can't take by herself.

We people in this era just live in the world that full of the social media, technology, facilities, welfare state, and familiar with it already, so sometime we might just not know that we just put the mind set and logic of our world to Frieren's world. The Frieren's world that no social media, the travel is so hard since there're none of car or plane and walking is the easiest choice, not every people who cares about the history like 80 years ago, not everyone that have a proper study or love to read a book. With all that I think it's normal for people who doesn't remember Frieren since the first thing that people think about the hero party is Himmel the hero anyway, Heiter is bishop so maybe someone knows him but Eisen and Frieren who have live more quietly would have been forgotten.

i dont expect EVERYONE to know who frieren is, but for people who study magic at one of the foremost magic institutions in the world, in a city referred to as "The City of Magic", in a world where people rarely see a single elf in their entire lives, and only 80 years after one of the most notable events in history took place (only 30 years after Himmel died, so its not ancient history), AND after Frieren was said to have helped the advancement of magical knowledge among humans after the end of the battle. If ANYONE would be able to guess who Frieren was on sight (again being that there are almost zero elven mages in the public sphere of knowledge, these people at this institution whose job it is for them to study magic would likely have more of a reaction to an elven mage with white hair and green eyes who is clearly as powerful as they see. For no one to have any idea or even a guess is clearly a set up for a select group of people who already know her to "find out" about her and for it to be a little satisfying reveal, but with the way frieren has been built up as a figure in academic magical history for these scholars to not even guess is weird. Im not saying they should know what she looks like. I grew up without the internet, so I'm not so consumed with it that I can't imagine what life would be like without it

I think 80 years is still quite long even if that's the 80 years after one of the most notable events in history. Of course we might not feels that much long since it's just like a few minutes for us. But just try to compare to the real world, people these day even some people in goverment in our real world doesn't know about ww2 that much too isn't it? since 1945 and now 2024 it's almost 80 years but the one that people remember the most is Hitler which is more like a demon king but others than that keep getting forgotten, some people who work for military or goverment these day don't even know who's the pres of the US back then, they don't even know the name of the Allied leaders during ww2, of course it's not ancient but 80 years still long for people to forgotten thing especially for some details. Plus, in ep 18 at the start of the episode(02.06 minute) when fern talking about first class mage I recognized some elf on the throne too so I don't think the people who work for magic association would hype or curious that much when they see another elf mage since they already got one on the throne so they might be familliar with elf than we thought. Others normal mage just don't care about history that much I guess, just only care about how magic work but doesn't care about who's the founder of it. So when they met the elf they just be like "Oh! that's an elf, we never saw them before." than "The elf mage! could it be the one in the hero party?

Funny enough about you guys mentioning the magical academy trope, during this arc of the manga many people were complaining that it was "boring" and wanted it to go back to the usual day-to-day traveling, saying it added nothing to the story, etc. But then again just like the early parts of the manga, people find anything to complain about and went back to complaining that the characters were too dead pan and stoic with their expressions and not emoting emotions constantly after this arc ended.

Lindsey understand assignment, "you're cute when you smile" is not just a simple compliment between two girls. Usually, girls, no matter how friendly they are to each other, often give compliments like "you're cute or beautiful, you're skinny," and these compliments usually lack a specific reason behind them. When there is a specific reason behind such a compliment, she genuinely feels that way.

For there being less mages, I read that as more that there just isn't a need for so many mages in a time of peace.

Most remnants of the demon armies are at the north and some remote areas. Mages nowadays probably would be "recruited" or "hired" near those area.

I mean, people don't normally know who Frieren is because even though she has been around for so long, she doesn't go to magic acendamics or try to make connections or tell anyone her history she just moved around and travel stop by town to help people in this world you have to walk everywhere not a lot of people travel on foot

If you think about it, it kinda makes some sense that they don't know her right off the bat. Since everything is recorded through writing, when would Frieren ever sit down and talk to some historian to allow them to write down her story? From what we know of Frieren, she's always on the move. Even after defeating the Demon King she immediately went off on another 50 year journey. So most of the info about her would be from third party accounts most likely (which the info wouldn't be entirely accurate). On top of that, Frieren didn't really become "active" until she joined Himmel; so those third party accounts of her mostly span those 10 years with Himmel. Also, this Magical City also doesn't seem to have any statues of the Heroe's party, so there is no clear image of Frieren for those that live in the city.

10:43 remember that Frieren was tasked by her master Flamme to be as inconspicuous as possible since she will be hunting demons. It's only logical that even if she contributed so much with mankinds advancement of magic, no credit is given to her or atleast her name is not associated with her looks.

This is a whole couple of generations after the hero party defeated the demon king and many people already forgot about them as we have seen. Human lives are quick and as such their history and advancements also move quick which is the whole point of the show, Frieren is always behind and old fashioned because her concept of time is different, humans chance mage certificates so often to her because it's every 100 years or so that she can't be bothered to keep up. The only people who have recognised her or know about her are old people who were kids during the hero party's adventure and even then they might not remember her name. It's not unusual for a lot of people to not recognise her as much like her master Flamme, she's just a name in a history book now. The first-class mage who is an old guy likely only recognised her when he saw her holy wand emblem. She lived a nomadic existence outside of those 10 years she was an adventurer so few people ever saw her face or spoke with her. The people that know her now are either old humans or elves who met her centuries ago.

What if she is already certified hunderds of years ago where she is an equivalent to the modern "first class mage" and that emblem is the proof? lmao

I think an interesting detail about the test is that it's purely focused on skill and knowledge. Age, status, gender, species, or whatever else doesn't matter. So you have what are basically still kids like Fern and Frieren's teammates taking it, as well as professional soldiers, full-grown established mages, and even an old dude who's an influential politician in his country, not to mention Frieren herself. While Frieren's teammates bicker and pull each other's hair, Fern's teammate is said to have killed her proctor in the previous exam, and other characters will behave as you'd expect from someone their age in with their background. It's not a test that's applied as is to a bunch of young people roughly the same age, and that changes things from what you tend to see in this kind of story arc.

Its the same case with Himmel, in one chapter of the manga Frieren and co encounter a very buff and manly looking statue of Himmel. When asked, the villlagers said this is how they know him and they think heroes should be a figure like this. As bonus the author draw what the peoples expect the Hero Party look like at the end of the chapter. Himmel the buff manly and wear a noble clothes, Eisen the muscular and heavily bearded dwarf(realy muscular), Frieren is an Onee-san looking elf mage with slightly revealing clothes, And Heiter is a gentle looking Onee-san body and sister like figure, yes she is thought to be female(lmao)...

Actually, at the time of Flamme, magic was outlawed by of the Gov. Mages had to study magic in secret. It was Flamme who turn over that situation. The people who go to 1st class exam are all combat mages. Scholar mages won't take that

I guess this information is TECHNICALLY a spoiler since it won't be mentioned until next episode (possibly the episode after actually) it's not super plot relevant so I feel comfortable mentioning it here. but I guess spoiler warning. I'll add a few dots so you can choose to hit see more for yourself. ... ... ... ... Most of the mages there absolutely know of Frieren. However, you have to realize the majority of Humans have never met an Elf before. And Frieren is more like a legend to everyone there. They may have heard stories, but they aren't sure how much is just fiction. So things like; "Elves live a super long time" isn't something that every person believes. Some suspect it COULD be Frieren, but they don't fully believe that someone from that long ago could still be alive, or at the very least look exactly the same.

Hunter exam, chunin exams, MHA's exams there are so many exams in anime that are similar, but what the show wants to do and the character dynamics are different. Don't compare them with gon and killua, they are completely different characters.

Kraft is down by the city where they beat Aura. Uber mentioned that Aura had been defeated. She's traveling north towards the mountains, but it's currently summer, that's why she is able to get to the magical city in a couple of months. Doesn't have to worry about the winter and she's not taking her time to help people along the way either.

Glade im not the only one who thought this sounded just like the hunter exam tho this arc seems like it will be fun I just hope it doesnt feel draged out to long witch was my one problem with the demon arc

Yes, the rest of this season will cover this arc. This is the first long arc of the series. Those people who said that this is the worst arc are exaggerating because it's not. This arc actually helped expand the story, introduce key characters for future arcs, impact of the deeds of the Hero's party and provide more information on how things work in this series. People always have something they don't like about things. I guess it'll all depend on your preference.

This arc definitely is not a bad one, in fact is rather cool. I personally love the next one more, for that one this one is needed. This one has a lot of cool stuff in it, the mages are interesting and there's action too. The only complain, maybe, is that Stark is not present for setting reasons.

I still enjoyed the episode, but it didn't feel like Frieren. Felt like a more generic anime episode, with anime characters and anime arc. I was hoping Frieren would mostly stay out of that. Took me out of the story a bit.

Felt the same reading the manga. I had to double check if they didn't actually switch magazines over to wsj because the entire arc just felt out of place to me. I also dropped the manga at this point so I'm hoping the anime will actually get me to enjoy it.

The show would start to feel like too much of the same thing if all Frieren did was peacefully walking through every city reminiscing about the past. Arcs like this are a nice change of pace and are highly important for the plot, wich is a sign of good writing. Frieren or Fern NEED to get a first-class mage certification in order to go through the Northern lands to continue their journey smoothly. Cant hurt to get stronger too since you know, there will be extremely strong monsters and demons on the way to Heaven. Also, many of the characters you are introduced to in this arc will make reoccuring appearences @@tiocn

frieren lived without showing off and this is 80 years after himmel's death and 130 years after they defeated demon king. And I think a lot of people when they meet respected celeb they're usually "is that... can't be"
