I have been using Owlbear Rodeo 1.0 for almost 3 years now. I'll miss the 1.0 when it's taken away, as I'm not keen on paying for a VTT, so I may have to make the jump to Foundry, since it's a one-time purchase for the Pathfinder license, which I'm planning on using, along with my existing 5e games.

@@knavesquill9198 You purchase foundry itself, the PF2 ruleset is a free module :) You can buy an official token pack from paizo to add artwork to all the PF2 monsters, which is an excellent pack and well worth it in my opinion.

I played for years with Roll20, then Let's Role and Foundry. My next campaign will be with Owlbear Rodeo. I don't want to pay my subscribtion on the Forge and owlbear rodeo is just enough for waht I need.

It's important to remember that owlbear 1.0 will only be available for another few months. It will then be replaced by a more commercial oriented version 2.0 (with free options still existing, but a bit more limited in storage).

Is it just storage that's getting limited in 2.0 free? Because I can live with that easily enough, but losing the whole free option would really suck.

@@IcarusGames Yes, in the current version of owlbear rodeo you essentially save all data in the browser cache, so your computer. The new version has a limited cloud of 200mb for the free version and a few small inconveniences. Other then that it's pretty similar to 1.0 with a few quality of life improvements like an initiative tracker. The paid version has more storage space and support for animated maps which is cool. It's also a bummer that they cancelled chrome music sharing and outsourced it to KenkuFM. KenkuFM is a good, free music sharing service, but it only works on discord which kind of limits it's capabilities. So yeah, overall the update is a mixed bag. But I'm happy to see them get stable income from this, they deserve it.

@@IcarusGames Owlbear have completly ruined what 1.0 amazing. My mother told to not say anything if I can't say it nicely. So I won't say what I think of the way they went with 2.0

@@1pageadventuresOne thing I really like about owlbear rodeo is how easy it is to drag and drop most assets. So I save most assets and maps on my computer until I'm ready to set them up. Makes it really easy to have a bunch of tokens saved and even drag and drop them last minute if you need.

They will make the version 1.0 open source at some time in the future. I really love the simplicity of it! I'm trying the beta 2.0 version now, and while I like it, I miss the very simple DIY vibe of the first one.

It's a good little program but wish it did have LoS. Yes, Foundry can be complex when adding modules but the base program does everything I need pretty easily. Great to see more of these tools being developed.

i've used owlbear rodeo a lot for the games that i run. its really really good, and it runs on my really old laptop that is truly barely clinging to life just make sure u arent playing with assholes cause everyone has editing permissions for everything

Excellent point. That's where Foundry really shines; just with it's sheer amount of control options.

It looks great! Definitely would be an option if I were still running online. Thankfully I do not have to do that anymore and plan never to do that again.

I think abovevtt is amazing for a free vtt. Only works on DND beyond but it has so many features like fog and line of sight

I still prefer planar ally. Been using it for 4 years now and not gonna look back anytime soon.

The title is kind of click bait ;-) I get the point, that Owlbear is probably the best free VTT for some users, but for me it is definitely MapTool! :-D

It's a question, the answer could always be no!

Unfortunately owlbear has commercialized and pretty much ruined its use as a free program. By limiting the space you have down to 200MB from what was before---nealry infinite since it was LOCAL. This has pretty much killed its use for me i think, i'm trying it atm, but honestly i doubt i can fit a whole chapter into 200mb, i guess we'll find out... but i am already having reservations with it. I do like some of the new features... i just hate that its cloud only... i wish we could do local if we wanted to but looks like they are going the roll 20 model. It was this same model that made me shy away from roll 20. I feel like i might just have to go back to Maptools... it seems to be the ONLY truly free option and i just cant see putting out MORE cash every month on a sub for something i only play once or twice a month.

Pity you did OBR1 just as OBR2 coming out :-(

i like OBR 2.0 is great

TBH, after purchasing Foundry VTT, every other VTT seems meh

Foundry is great, but sometimes I just need something simple to move tokens around on, you know? The learning curve in foundry isn't the smallest so it can be difficult to just get up and playing with a new group.

Owlbear Rodeo 1.0 was by far the best, if you wanted a free and simple VTT. But by shutting down 1.0 and only running their new (way more shit) 2.0. Owlbear Rodeo is ruined.
