mono is not just a mixtape, it's a feeling in itself. it's like a warm hug when you're feeling down - and i used to be one of those people who didn't quite understand what others meant when they said they listened to mono when they felt upset, but now i do. everythingoes in particular means a lot to me. joon accomplished something with this mixtape that any artist would be proud of, and even though he has said more recently that he doesn't relate to mono anymore, it encapsulates the emotion perfectly and it will forever remain important to a whole lot of people, including myself.

Where does he say this that he doesn’t relate. Of course he’s better now than when he wrote mono and was when he put out the album. RM tries to put out work that helps people and this whole album is one of the best things he put out. I see people liking but not questioning this source. I remember on Suchwita recently he talks about the colors he used which was black and white, monochromatic colors. He said that soon after he started wearing more colors and he wishes there were more colors. Indigo is making up for that with its 10 shades, ten songs. To me though considering the songs themselves, black and white fits perfectly. The fact that he wanted some colors in there shows his change of mind. He created such a work of art. Pls let me know where you got that statement from so that I can search it up as well. Maybe you misinterpreted what he said?

Namjoon has gotta be up there with one of the most talented writers of this musical generation of artists, his lyrics translated are beautiful in themselves but they’re even more beautiful and poetic in Korean, where the meaning is fully present. He’s like one of VERY few people who can beautifully write poetry type lyrics in 3 languages, Korean, English, and Japanese.

It could be tourist so 2.a Life is a word sometimes you cannot say b. life is a wave sometimes you cannot see Its so meaningful and deep in every way it's crazy and i also think joonie purposely pronounced this way

@@SLiPinBoise ... Yep & ash is also what we used to be before we were born. It's basically carbon mostly. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Most of the molecules in our bodies used to be part of a live organism before, like a previous person, plant, animal, microorganism, who are now all dead, generation to generation of organisms, going as far back long before the dinosaurs, to the primordial sea. It's Recycling ... because we live on a planet that doesn't get much stuff from outerspace except a tiny amount of metorites for 4+ billions years. "That someday we all should be", probably means he's stating the obvious that Earthen mortal death is part of the mortal life cycle, whether designed by nature or god or both. Mono is like that old friend to whom you return very often, in a variety of moods and for varied reasons; doesn't matter how long it's been but you pick up the threads immediately. We've weathered some dark times together and I will never be able to fully articulate how much it means. This goes for much of Suga's solo work too, but we're here to celebrate our "Prince of Ilsan".

Seeing reactions like yours remind me of how spoiled ARMY is, that we are given these kinds of gifts from BTS. They are just so generous with their artistry and releasing gems like these FOR FREE? I know we don't care about the awards shows anymore, but this is one project that deserves every recognition, for just how genius and amazing it is, regardless of the language barrier. Another reason why I will forever be a fan.

I was thinking recently about the differences between mono and Indigo. For me, mono has always felt like when you’re in a dark room, someone coming in and sitting with you quietly so that you know you’re not alone. Not trying to change you, make you smile, fix your problems, etc. Just sitting in comforting harmony, waiting for you to decide yourself when it’s time to feel better and leave that room. Indigo picks up where mono leaves off, when you leave that room. It recognizes how effed up the world is and how sad, lonely, and confusing life can be, but then it takes you by the hand, reminds you how big the world is, and encourages you to LIVE. I 💯 believe RM will be remembered as one of, if not THE most significant songwriters of his generation. As you said, his ability to capture/reflect such a depth of emotion is just awe-inspiring. 💜

To me, RM's albums most closely reflects that unique thread of healing that I feel in BTS's projects. It makes it clear that hes the main songwriter of the group because you hear the DNA of his writing and perspective in his stuff and BTS's stuff so clearly. It's wonderful how the music feels like a pat on the head and a kind word when your heart needs it most. It's impossible for me to pic a fave BTS album or solo project. When I'm in need of gentle comfort though, I turn to RM's music most often. When im in need of sunshiney confort I turn to Hope World and when I want to listen to something a bit dark and angsty for comfort I go to Yoongi's stuff and Jack In The Box. The Astronaut still makes me cry but its great for missing Jin hours. All of them have a time and place for me. I could go on and on.

Mono reached out to me and showed me that RM gets how depression and suicidal ideation can burrow into your soul and how exhausting it can be to live with them. How people can look at your success and ask “how can you possibly be like lonely and sad?!!” He GETS IT and is unafraid to communicate it in this album. My hero, really.

Mono is such a special place in my heart. It’s gone so full circle in my life it’s so crazy. (Sob story incoming) When Mono came out fall 2018, my best friend and I were in college living together. She was probably at her lowest mentally in life, and I wasn’t. I didn’t get her comfort and sadness associated with mono and what was going on in her life. Then a few months later my father passed unexpectedly. I’d never dealt with a close and personal death. I felt so alone. And my best friend then became the one to be there for me. Almost like this balancing act. She was my soulmate to say the least. Then 2019 came and I found so much happiness and that was my best year. Then covid (we all know). But then in 2021 my best friend was diagnosed with stage four stomach and liver cancer with no prognosis to live more than a few years. We stopped listening to mono together, and eventually we stopped listening to a lot of Kpop together. BTS was her outlet, and I saw her slowly fading from it. Her passion disappearing. She passed this last June 23rd. I feel so lonely. I feel so empty. I feel like I have no one even when I have everyone. Everyone but her. About a week and a half after her passing I listened to mono and it was the first time I had cried since she passed. I didn’t cry at all until that moment. now I get it. I get what she meant back in 2018 when this album was released. It brings you out of your lowest with the warmest and most supporting hug anyone/anything could give you. If any of you guys want to learn about my best friends story, her ig page is @churreh She was such a beautiful human, and could bring any light forward🤍

As soon as this project was released, Mono. became my comfort album and still is to this day. There's just something about him accepting the pain and trying to embrace it until it passes rather than most people who just try to tell you to stay positive and ignore or hide the pain you're going thru. Moonchild is my absolute favorite song off this album but every single song from this project is amazing. Anytime I need to calm my anxiety or am about to have a panic attack, I'll turn on everythingoes and it helps me calm down so much faster than anything else.

Can't wait to revisit that playlist with you let me jump in to that reaction Edit post-reaction: well i agree.. mono is just a very special and unique standout project... it resonates with so many and comforted so many...b I think by ash he means like dust.. we all shall return to the earth abd become ash... death.. it also refers to the ash from the city (especially in Seoul where pollution levels can get really high and dust visible).... mono is literally monochromatic black (and white) and grey is a color the he uses to also often express sadness (cf. RM's verse in the BTS song blue and grey) and leading the way to the color that then entered his life (indigo)

This playlist/mixtape is something I hold dear to my heart...it saved me. I cant thank Namjoon enough for baring his soul to us so that we could find comfort in the harsh circumstances of our lives. We connect through music, reflection, introspection and relating to each other although we are different. It doesnt take much to change your perception of life if you think about it but it also feels humanly impossible to do so at the same time. For me it was "it all passes...everything goes", this became a mantra for me and I still need it till this day. This is an artist, poet and amazing human being who told me all I had to do was breathe and I would be alright. RM and all of BTS for that matter are magic that this world needs more of ...

Regarding "ash": I believe the mention on Tokyo meant death, a "we all shall die one day" (with "shall" being an interesting choice, in contrast with "will" - I think he's saying that type of pain is also a part of life and should be embraced as well). And it's a different usage, a literal one. The other mentions of "ash" as an adjective, seem to refer to "grey-ness" on things (all building being painted grey, the pavimented road being gray, etc) or on humans (faces that are tired, resigned, sad). It seems like it's always linked to a "sameness" too, everyone I see is grey or everything I see is grey. Thank you for another video

I’m really struggling after 3 failed surgeries to repair my foot. I NEED mono…it keeps me trudging on even though shit is hard rn. Btw, Yoongi does the same repetition of comfort words in Snooze. He repeats the phrase 다 괜찮아질 거야 which means everything will be ok. I tell myself this many, many times a day. I’m just glad BTS, and especially Yoongi and Namjoon are keeping it real for us and letting us know that we are all out here just being. And sometimes being isn’t easy, it sucks, but it will pass.

When mono came out, I listened to it days on end over and over. I cried every time. It was so painful to me to think that RM had to suffer and was suffering so much. Finally after maybe a year or so, it didn't make me cry anymore. I could find it comforting. Flash forward a bit more and I began to even appreciate a sort of melancholic sexiness to it. Tokyp has always been my favorite track. Until a few years ago, the lyric was translated to torso. Then, someone translated it differently making torn soul. They both make sense to me but I think it is torn soul and not torso even though that is what we all thought for years and years. Also, FYI, RM once said that mono was a playlist that he made to comfort himself when he was down. It contains the things he wants to hear when he is feeling sad/blue/depressed/stressed/etc. So he created a self-soothing project that ended up comforting millions around the world. Like another post I saw, he said he doesn't really identify with the Namjoon that created mono anymore. He has changed and grown. He is someone else now. Oh and he also said recently that he thinks of his mixtapes as experiments and that Indio is his first real attempt as a solo artist.

this is my comfort album. i don't really think about this album when I'm actively listening to music, but when I work or read I so often put it in the background because it has such a comforting energy, all tracks flow together so well so i just have it on on the loop and it is perfect. as much as i love rm's aggressive rap i think he is at his best when making those softer tracks, that sound like wistful poetry with a melody. he is a musical and lyrical genius.

Namjoon is truly a poet and I am so glad that he got into music and rap, because he has a talent and his words / music can heal people, and that is not an easy task, I am so proud of him, mono was my anchor during the pandemic, and I probably wouldn't be here if it wasn't for this mixtape .. So so so thankful and I'm happy that you got to hear this in this period of sadness, I hope it will help you !

Ashes in tokyo can be interpreted in many ways. The first thing that came to my mind was the process of cremation, it could also be the colour ash and how this colour relates to the feeling of dull, loneliness emptiness

Thank you for such a vulnerable reaction. I too love Mono so much. My interpretation of moonchild is that moonchildren are those sensitive souls - the ones who feel deeply and are sometimes criticised for being too soft and to easily pained by things. It's a song of comfort for me that my pain is valid and I too have a place - perhaps not a place under the sun but the moon welcomes me.

mono is one of my favorite pieces of work ever published. It was funny to me, ironic, when mono was released and I heard moonchild, I've been writing poetry since I was 8, I'm 27 now, and I was 22 when mono came out. For the longest time I've been writing poetry about the moon and I'd call my self "moon child" in many of them, because I've been dealing with depression for over a decade now, and many times I felt I could only breathe at night, when everything was quiet and I felt I could finally let go of my mask and be myself, let my sadness flow. I wrote, drew, painted, read, all at night with the moon my only companion. Right now even, its 4.42am, Im working thr night shift just bcs I love the tranquility of night, when I feel its only me and no one else can bother me. So when I heard moonchild I finally felt seen, I saw Namjoon and I thought "wow, you understand me". I will carry that song with me until I die.

I cannot explain the full context of how RM used "ashy" in this whole mixtape but I'm pretty sure that in Tokyo the expression we all go back to ashes means that we all die, we become dust. 4:55 = We are all from dust and to dust we will return. I think in Seoul, he used "ashy" as a way to describe the city. My favorite line from Seoul is at 13:15. It's so brilliantly written.

I think the ashy line makes sense with the album being mono, suggesting monochromatic/grayscale. He has such extreme darkness and sadness in his heart and such bright ideals...and he knows it too, that he has both of these opposite sides of the spectrum in him. Becoming ashy would be becoming gray, meeting himself somewhere between his ideals and reality. Accepting and mixing what he hates and loves.

When mono came out, I felt all the lyrics so deeply, like it was exactly what I needed at the time, because I felt the same way. It's such an experience, that somehow feels bigger than just a normal album? I'm not sure if that makes sense, but it feels like its own little world while listening. Mono will always have a special place in my heart💜 Edit: I always thought the ash thing, was about the fact that inevitably we're all gonna die. We will all return to ash at some point, that's the natural cycle of life. I think it's just something that comes up when reflecting on life in general.

I think "ash" in Tokyo refers to death, for one, and also the end result of having lived a full life or having loved fully. In Korea, cremation is customary nowadays because of lack of space. I guess it could make more sense to you if you think of the word "dust." He said "ash is a thing that someday we all should be" instead of "would be." This line could evoke a dark thought some of us experience in a depressed state. But... I sense a reference to sentiment in an old poem / song called "Love" (although he may not have thought of the specific poem in this case). "Burn, burn all of you. Don't ever stop burning it all. Burn and burn again and you are sure to become ashes, but a half-burnt log is good for nothing. If you're going to stop half-way, don't even start it." (Refer to his song "Trivia: Love," where he equates life and love.) All this to say, I think Tokyo (and Mono as a whole) is a song about RM's feeling of "uhgood"(incongruent) between real RM (who he truly is) and the masked RM (the celebrity he needs to be for others). RM likes to think of human beings ("better adult") as trees. Trees keep giving to the end until nothing is left of itself. I think the running theme of RM's art is Love, complete and selfless. The more you look at RM's words, the more you see. It's truly incredible that he was writing these at such young age. Other artists tickle your emotions because they convey deep pain or pleasure of the moment. But RM goes way beyond. This is why my whole being is brought out and comforted when I listen to his songs. I mean, no other artist has touched so much of my inner world. Now that you have Mono in your heart and soul, I hope you too will become one of the few in this world who truly understand the human Namjoon and hug him often :-) Thank you for sharing your moment with us.
