Is This Rig Better Than The Drop Shot AND The Texas Rig? Free Rig Breakdown!

In today's video, we are talking about one of my favorite rigs and that's the Free Rig! The Free Rig was invented in Japan and is slowing making its way over here in the US, replacing the drop shot and the texas rig for a lot of guys. The Free Rig combines the drop shot and the texas rig and gives the fish something that they might not have seen before!

We have been fishing this rig for over 30 years in the river. The only difference is we use bell sinkers. You start adding beads and bobber stops and soon you will have a dozen slight modifications for different situations.

Thanks for giving us great tackle info and I always enjoy them! For your info, Free rig originated from Andong, South Kore some 15 years ago unlike other finnese rigs gaining popularities followng uses on US tour circuits. It has been gaining popularities amongst Japanese anglers in recent years though. It was deveoped in Andong by some bass anglers who fished the lake Andong heavily due to the unique structural character which required fast sinking rig for bass suspended in deep waters there. Top Japanese pros like Namiki Toshinari and hot Japanese youtuber like Hata Takuma also introduced the origin of the rig recently on their channels.

Thank you for the info. I’m aware of the origin, but I consider this a Japanese technique, since it is the most popular finesse technique in Japan and it drives the JDM finesse industry, and that’s what US anglers are interested in 👍.

huh, I have been using this for a long time. I have very little money and I usually don't buy different types of weights. Usually I get a couple different sizes of lead swivel sinkers, casting sinkers I think they are also called. I use this rig with all types of soft plastic lures and have success. Flukes, ribbon tail worms, craws, stick baits, and large grubs are what I use the most with this rig. Works well for me here in central/south east Colorado.

Been using this rig and a variations of it for decades. Funnily enough, I shower a leader variation of this last week on a couple of my videos. Using a bomb sinker free running on the main line, to a small brass ring, and an 18 inch leader. Works great for redfin perch and yellowbelly, but, like I say, prone to hanging up in rocks.

The Free-League is called the national league in Korea. If Japan has a Down-shot League, Korea is a Free-League. The reason the Free-League is hot in Japan right now is that it is being used later than Korea. You may have used the Free-League before. This is very easy and fast to set up. Korea also uses the Texas League and Alabama League a lot. So is this made in Korea? Every league knows that anyone can use it. But don't touch its origins. If you are an expert, you need to pass the right knowledge on to people.

So what hook and size are you guys throwing the 3" dolive beaver on? I grabbed a pack from you guys but, I don't have a single hook small enough to fit it. I ended up using a straight shanked neko hook- but it has no keeper on it so my bait is continually sliding down. It looks like maybe a 1/0 cover shot would work- 2/0 is the smallest I have and it's almost right- the point goes through the very tip of the main body though, the head. That's making the bait to stiff really- I would prefer the front 3rd of the body to be hanging off the hook freely. Any advice would be greatly appreciated- from anyone. If you throw this bait, this size- help me out, please.

Kinda mirrors a texas rig without the sinker pegged. I throw my texas rig with the bullet not pegged 95% of the time except when punching. Had a buddy I grew up with that did this with an egg sinker when we ran outta bullet weights. Still caught fish. I’m definately gonna try it, no doubt, but can’t really see the difference in the texas rig unpegged based on the tank test. Would love to bear tour response and 2 cents on it. Thanx!!! You say your jig/worm rod WILL work. Is that to say you’d throw this on casting gear? Or do you largely throw it on spinning gear so that it meets less resistance taking line off the spool?

Greetings from across the pond in the UK, I have a question regarding baits for this rig. Can you use a buoyant bait ie Z-MAN?

  • @MrRourk

Yes but use a 1/80 or 1/100 jig so it doesn't float up to fast. You want it to rise but slowly. It will look like it just died to the fish.

What do you think about tying on to the weight like a drop shot, and instead have the hook be free? Wouldn't the bait slide with line upwards while the sinker falls.

I use a modified version of this. I add a bobber stop between the knot and the weight to keep the weight from constantly smasing into my knot. Great finesse technique.

that rig has been in the great lakes region for 50+ years. Works even better on walleye. It's just a swivel-less lindy rig. Use a floating jig head and you can jig from the bottom at distance without having to recast. You can even pull the bait to the sinker, and let out the amount of line to jig at very specific depths.

Huh, didn’t know this was an established rig. Felt like a ding dong once throwing a Texas rig with a teardrop weight instead of a bullet weight, which I left at home. Little did I know!

Great video as always, thanks for the detailed explanation of the benefits of this technique. But you’re out of stock on a LOT of the stuff listed below. So, not sure I get the idea of promoting a technique we can’t buy components for.

Going back and watching this again after my first year with the free rig. Everything is true about this technique. I put it through hell, kayak river fishing for smallies. No stopping, just hit and run every wood pile on the river. If you want to find out how snagless a technique is... river fishing is the truth. Out of thousands of casts I might have lost a dozen, maybe. I used it finesse with tiny worms on a 1/32 or 1/16 ounce weight. Its one year later and hundreds of fish caught...time to stock up for next season.

Hey so I’m looking at doing the same river smaille fishin with the free rig, but I have a lot of chunk rock and boulders in my rivers, do you think the free rig can handle it? Drop shots get snapped too much and a lot of other finesse presentations don’t work too well.

@@colem94 Absolutely!! I'm in a kayak all of the time and the main river I fish is nothing but rock and boulders. It will stick some of the time but, 95% I get it back. Look for wieghts that are cylindrical, and not tear drop shaped. Because mostly if they went into a crack they'll come back out. Where as a tear drop shape can wedge into rock.
