Explore this very interesting area of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia called Chow Kit. It's now also known as Little Indonesia due to the amount of Indonesian people who are working In Kuala Lumpur at the moment. It's actually a very nice part of town, way nicer than I thought at first.

A few locations in KL are well-known to particular communities. For instance, the Indonesians are in Chow Kit, the Filipinos in Kota Raya Complex, the Bangladeshis and Nepalis in the vicinity of Kota Raya, the Pakistanis largely along Jalan Ipoh, and the Middle Easterners in the Bukit Bintang region. There are also sizable Korean and Japanese populations in Mont Kiara. They might go unnoticed because they resemble like our Chinese.

Many are looking for job opportunities in Malaysia bro. Especially from Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal and even some Arab countries facing crisis such as Yemen, Iran and Syria. Because Malaysia entered into an agreement with several labor supply countries, Malaysia is also faced with the problem of illegal immigrants who enter without valid documents but through the rat route by human trafficking syndicates. Surprisingly, even though this syndicate imposes high fees, it does not stop these foreigners from wanting to enter illegally. It is said that there are more than 1 million Chinese nationals who enter Malaysia through legal channels and do not leave until their visa expires. Some stay in luxury condos and conduct illegal online gambling activities.

Malaysians come to chow kit market because we want to buy ingredients to cook and fruits, because the price is very cheap there. As Malays, we dont eat food served at stalls at chow kit market because we feel uneasy with the cleanliness of the place and the way Indonesians cook their food. Local Malays are much cleaner in our way of preparing our food and we dont want to get food poisoning too. One thing, chow kit market is an old market, hence it is not clean as per modern malaysians standards.

Great video, man. You do an excellent job highlighting the cultural diversity in Kuala Lumpur. Indonesians are wonderful people, and the Chow Kit area has always been known as "Little Jakarta" since the 1970s. I have an Indonesian maid at home who has been with us for more than a year. Unfortunately, due to a few bad apples, we employers have to take drastic measures to avoid being cheated by some of these maids. Since we have to pay a large amount upfront to hire the maids, we need to keep their passports and ensure our premises are locked at all times to prevent them from running away. I even keep my maid's room locked at night. This causes unnecessary stress for me. I hope Indonesians teach their children about integrity.

It's against the law to hold on to your maid's passport and it certainly is akin to imprisonment to lock her room door from the outside. Do not be surprised if the police come knocking at your door one day. Your best bet to allay your fears is to hire through a licensed agent and make sure that agent has it in black and white that he will be responsible for replacing the maid if she runs away.

actually is quite simple. each site in the market has a boss which is local and they usually have local and indonesia worker too, majority customer is local.. u can see local during early morning after fajr like 7-8am.. if u meet an indonesian people who came from acheh, if u ask their origin. they will tell u they from acheh and not indonesia. it is because acheh was once a great empire along side johor sultanate empire.. "acheh" in malaysia are more into selling and enterpreneurship bcoz local boss can trust them. when they speak local malay, they can hide their accent easily and do not have jakarta style accents. and their face more decent look so sometimes you think their are local malay until u heard they speak acheh language.. "madura" more into building and constructions.. there area also javanese and others who work as factory worker and some work in food stall and as well as some in palm tree plantations and there are estimated 2.7 million Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia

if someone say the area is like 'Indian slum', he or she obviously hasn't step foot in this area for at least 10 years. Chow Kit admittedly is the least appealing part of KL. 10 years ago it looks like a run down ghetto neigborhood (but never Mumbai kinda slum level). But now thanks to City Hall, the place is actually very well maintained, neat, & lively. I was quite suprise when I walk around the area, even the 'red light dictrict' (Lorong Haji Taib) now is clean & tidy.

Chow Kit was one of the busiest part in KL ever since I can remember. In the 70s (my time), the main hubs in KL were Chow Kit and Bangkok Bank/Central Market area. Chow Kit is where my mid-stop is commuting from home to Uni. Bas Sri Jaya from home to Chow Kit then, minibus number 35 all the way to Pantai Bahru. No LRT/MRT back then. Not sure about now, but back then prior to the 90s, Indonesians can have red-identity card (permanent resident but not a citizen) as opposed to Malaysian citizen's blue identity card.

Definitely not an Indian slum level lol. But the Chow Kit, Titiwangsa, Sentul area is quite dirty. I think u mostly walked through the main streets area which is pretty clean. Try to go further inside and u will see it is quite dirty. I used to live in Titiwangsa which is really close to Chow Kit and I am glad I don't live there anymore. It's getting disgusting by the time I leave.

@@Chai_Travel You are right though. In the city center it's pretty clean. Even in the main streets of the Chow Kit area which used to be dirty as hell it is decently clean these days. I am saddened over the declining state of Titiwangsa though. It used to be a nice place to live now it is terrible. Rats as huge as a cat is everywhere and the Titiwangsa river is smelling like 😑.

It is amazing to see that eventhough all Indonesians are maids and construction workers, they can survive as a country. Or..maybe this stereotype is just too stupid.

Maybe it’s too much of a stereotype. Though I think there are too many people working way too many hours in Malaysia to make enough money.

@@Chai_Travel actually 800,000 Indonesian workers working in Malaysia is only 0.29% of total Indonesian population of 270 million. Back in Indonesia, middle class is actually the majority (200 million), followed by the rich (50 million, which is bigger than the total population of Malaysia even if combined with Singapore & Brunei). The last is the poor, around 10% (26-27 million). However, Malaysians tend to look down upon all Indonesians, stereotyping them as poor maids & cement mixers.
