Is This New Zealand School The Best In The World?

Model Schools For Europe (1997):
An insight into why New Zealand's schools are the best in the world, radically reformed from the late 1980s.

In Auckland, New Zealand, Michaela turns five. Kneeling in front of her pink and white birthday cake, she explains that now she will enter the 'big' school. Most children start school on their 5th birthday in New Zealand, giving teachers and children a 'rolling' introduction to each other. In Europe, all children start school on the same day. They enter a system plagued by slashed budgets, demoralised teachers and an unclear curriculum. In 1989, confronting its own failed education record, New Zealand's Labour Government turned its system upside down. Now, parents have the majority vote on school boards. They choose their child's school freely and a poor school gets less pupils and less money. Crucial to the system, parents assist in the classroom and sign notes to indicate they've supervised their children's homework. At Michaela's school pupils sit attentively on the floor reading and singing with their teacher. "We would never tell a child that he or she is not good, ... we focus on the positive side", says a school inspector. European teachers are increasingly aware that New Zealand schools may offer a model for tomorrow's education

Sad that we don't see the disparity between the rich schools shown and the poor schools.

I disagree with her saying there are no bullies. We were taught to be nice to each other... but my brother was bullied horrendously. No teacher ever did anything about it. I think that's a major oversight. I really think that it's important that we look at children holistically. Hurt people hurt people. Learning how to address the hurt in those who are hurt is so important. Because instead of addressing the truth of the situation; that this child is hurting another because they themselves are hurt, everything is getting swept under the rug. Children have a mighty sense of justice. Don't discourage that by not prioritising the truth.

Children will naturally navigate to their own kind. They will hang out at school with like-minded kids. The scum will hang out with scum, high achievers like wise. My son has never been hassled at school, as he has no interest in dealing with scum.

Education system in New Zealand is very far behind. From my own personal understanding, NZ gives us more freedom of learning in our own pace and time. Kiwi teachers teach students in many ways in terms of their own cultures.

New Zealand has one of the highest funded education systems in the world. It is one of the best regarded systems in the world. Anyone complaining about it is usually an outcast feral deadbeat. One who failed at school, now blaming the government for all their problems. 85% of a child’s education begins and ends at home! IT STRTS AT HOME!

New Zealand has a poor curriculum and academic results, borne out by the governments own figures. By their own admission, students have 17% less understanding of subjects than 20 years ago. There is way too much reliance on online teaching and technology, due to the teachers own lack of knowledge. In short, NO THEY ARE NOT

What an absolute idiotic statement. 85% of a child’s education begins at home………..AT HOME! Lots of blame gets focused on schools, they are not the answer to poor parenting. Feral, dumb parents usually breed dumb kids. Being a parent is not that hard, giving up your time seems to be.

13:10: "The teacher is concerned about teaching children, not concerned about teaching mathematics or about science...". They should be concerned about BOTH. And from my practice, they are not. The products of NZ schools usually know nothing, unless they study externally, and they don't know how to apply themselves. Now I see why. They are not concerned about science. (A university lecturer has spoken.)

This is a New Entrant classroom. Science at NE level, and through much of primary school, should be experience-based. Teachers are focused on where the child is at, and moving them on from there, not simply on shoving information down student throats, as university lecturers do.
