A couple of days after I shot the Fuji GA645w I had the chance to shoot a Makina 67, a camera that I wanted to shoot for a long time. Yes, it wasn't the one with my preferred focal length but with a similar shooting experience despite the fact it had a 80mm lens.
After seeing the results I am very pleased how they turned out. Even when shot wide open at f/2.8 the Nikkor lens delivered stunningly sharp images with a nice and creamy bokeh.
The only thing that concerns me a little bit is all the trouble the owner of the camera went through. Maybe those issues are not common but still it makes me think twice wether or not I should get a Makina Plaubel.
The film I shot was Fuji Acros 100 that was pushed to 400, which wasn't really necessary but I like the extra punch it gives the Acros. The roll of Portra delivered as you would expect. Not sure at what speed I shot it at but I probably overexposed by several stops since I shot it at 1/500 with an aperture of f/2.8. It was developed normally without any pulling.

11:22 The shutter normally won't cock after the last frame, that's how you'd know. Perhaps this was one of the problems the Makina you used had. An unusual feature of the 670 is that its light meter is practically a spot meter. This was an intentional design decision geared at advanced users. I got my Makina in 2005 and it needed a small shutter repair but it has worked perfectly since then (it's 2022 now). It still has the same light meter battery (they seem to last forever). There are some things to remember to keep it in good order, like remembering to set the focus to infinity before folding the lens. The sharpness and the bokeh of the lens is top notch.

Robin, the problem with the PM67 was that it wasn't properly serviced or CLA'd. The winder jam is a pretty common problem with the Makina when it hasn't been properly looked after. Sounds like your friend took it to someone who wasn't familiar with Plaubel repairs. So the camera wasn't exactly in good working order. Nevertheless, you got some fantastic images from it. I own a PM670 & love it, but I don't shoot street with it as it takes a while to compose & focus & you lose the moment, as the camera stands out way too much. Love it for street portraits tho. That Nikon lens is stellar.

Really great to see the Makina getting some love! I wrote a review of the Makina 67 on the Casual Photophile website which I recommend reading, as it has all of the little tips I've picked up about keeping the cameras healthy. They're wonderful and well made, but have a lot of parts that can be vulnerable to damage, and the meters often stop working. Funnily enough I was luckily able to get the W67 with the 55mm lens as well. The ridged surface on that camera plus the rubber on the focus wheel makes it so much faster to focus, and as such I enjoy using it a lot more than the original 67. Lens is pretty slow at f4.5, but really wonderful rendering! If possible get one under warranty from a camera shop. My 67 was winding very roughly but they serviced it under warranty, saving me £270!

I think the Hasselblad 500s and the Mamiya 6 & 7 are the undisputed kings of portable Medium format. As your looking for RFs, other options i can think of are the Makina & Fujis 6*0 (670/680/690) which are also great, I have the GSW with a 65 of which is an amazing lens. The issue I can see however with all of these for street is the minimum focus distance and depth of field of medium format, really inherently bad for most street photography uses as quick focus precision is much harder, with low light almost impossble and focus mistakes are clear in the larger negatives. Potentially something like the Hasselblad SWC or the Pentax 645AF might be the best medium format cameras for the type of work you show in this channel imo.

Not sure how you feel about 6x6, but you may want to check out the Lomography LC-A 120. It has a surprisingly sharp lens and wide 38mm aperture (21mm equiv.) . It also has a very fast zone focus system and you can typically get 12 or 13 shots per roll. Lastly, it’s probably the smallest medium format camera you can find. Thanks for all the videos!

Robin, have you considered the Fujica GS645W. You can zone focus with and it has a very accurate meter. It is a little on the slow side with f5.6 being the widest aperture and a max shutter of 1/500s.

Overexposed Porta has a look all of its own. Curious what format scans Carmencita delivered for you. Seems like some of the US labs by default only offer JPG which limits post processing

This has really great depth. I don't think I can see a huge difference between this and your M6 35f1.7 combo you used back in Thailand, but it does look nice. Maybe just a fast 50 or 55mm lens on the M6 would get you a similar look in terms of depth, but if you want to stay wide with the same depth, medium format is the way to go.

@WoboTheWombat I would in general step away from medformat rangefinders with film. These cameras 1) are old 2) have slow lenses and 3) usually limit you with 1/500 shutterspeed. These times Film gets more and more expensive - so I would go with WYSIWYG Cameras only - however I understand that it is tempting to have a carry around medium format Cam. I did use a Mamiya 7 and Fujica 645 myself by the way…

I can’t see the point of shooting 120 unless you print big with maximum quality. That means Fuji Gw690. Superior lens and properly affixed to the body. Not as heavy as people make it out to be. For real value the Ercona or Zeiss Super Ikonta C are hard to beat for 6x9 quality and portability. The Makina has always had a reputation for quality mixed with fragility.

Keep the Leica dude, for the resale value. Mamiya RF need quite a bit of servicing & they're plastic. Fantastic lenses tho. Plus 36 v 10 shots. Keep the Leica. I own a Makina 670, the following model. Much more reliable but still hella pricey to CLA. They're a luxury niche camera with that killer Nikon lens. MF is getting way too pricey to shoot nowadays. From my experience, the grass isnt greener, its just heaps pricier to maintain. You'll never lose money with a Leica, and you won't find Mamiya repairers for those cameras in the years to come due to lack of parts or lack of repairers because they've all mostly retired & no new technicians trained as Mamiya don't even exist anymore.
