IS THIS FAMOUS BOMBAY PARSI RESTAURANT OVERRATED?? BRITANNIA & COMPANY | MUMBAI

Myself and ‪@Thelocalguide‬ venture to a Parsi restaurant called 'Britannia and Company' in South Mumbai to see what all the fuss is about!

TWO THINGS: This is Both for you, other Tourists and many Locals who are not aware. There is a Museum available in CST (AKA VT). Make sure you everyone takes a tour, the time and amount is surely worth it. Second, for the record, a bit of a history about Parsis: Parsi, who also call themselves "Irani". According to the History, Parsis are known "Zar Tusht" (Fire Worshipers). When the revolution hit Iran, they announced that Fire Worshipers will be killed if they stay in Iran. So, the Parsi's ran for their dear life. I wouldn't call Parsis Iranians. Their food is different, their well known "Irani Chai" (Iranian Tea) is Actually not Iranian but rather Parsi. You see, in Iran, they do not drink tea with milk, it's always plain light black tea, but very light, unlike the Egyptian tea (which looks like coffee as it is SO STRONG. The other FACT ABOUT THE TEA IN IRAN, THEY DO NOT PUT SUGAR IN the tea. They dip a sugar cube in the tea, put it in their mouth and Then sip tea. As for the condition of the restaurant you've been to, I wouldn't be caught dead in it. It's almost ruins. It looks like it could fall on you ANY TIME 😵‍💫 But for the Chocolate Mouse, I probably get one and eat it outside. THEIR PRICES ARE NOT JUST HIGH, IT'S RIDICULOUSLY HIGH. WHY WOULD I PAY THAT PRICE FOR IT, NO AMBIANCE, NO HYGIENE. Next time you are in Mumbai, get in touch with me and I will take you to places, not many people talk about and it'll be like a Virgin territory, that'll boost and give you new viewership. Cheers

@@aaamp21 what exactly do they do with the selfies from complete strangers? My gf is British and when we visited India, we had a ton of people asking for selfies. I was born there but left India in the early 90s and selfies were not a thing back then. It gets annoying and some guys also use it as a segway to gratuitously grope the women and my gf had a couple of bad experiences like that. It’s a really annoying habit and I wonder what they do with pictures of white woman tourists.

India used to have tons of Irani cafes back in the 80s and 90s but most of them disappeared. The place you went to, Britannia, is one of the very few remaining places along with a couple more in Bombay and one or two in Hyderabad. The Iranian cafes have a lot of history and known for cheap food and typical Parsi food fare. They have a lot of history with the Indian Independence Movement and it’s where people met . Most of them disappeared. They have a very peculiar ambience and usually very dated old buildings which haven’t seen paint in decades but a very lively atmosphere and great cheap fare. Unfortunately, most of them are no more.

@@deepakkamath1988 Can you bloody read and comprehend? The old Irani cafes were cheap. Now that most of them closed down, the remaining ones may be a novelty. 950 rupees is what? $11? Or £9? She can afford it and so can I. If you are a broke Desi making minimum wage, maybe you balk at the 950 rupees pulao.

Look for an update for that dish( Zereshk polo). In the Persian language Kooh( mountain) ,noor ( light), the Parsis are Zoroastrian Persians from Persia/ Iran , but we have a vast majority of Persians who are Shia Muslims today, still ,we basically have the same Zoroastrian culture as our ancestors as Nowuz, chelleh ,sadeh etc etc . Why would someone name their restaurant after a colonizing company btw???

I keep telling Vloggers coming to Bombay/Mumbai to take the Harbor line from CST Train station and go to Chembur suburb. Just as you come out of the station, a few meters walk brings you to the Restaurant called “Grand Central”. They were famous for their unique butter chicken. I am not sure if they have maintained that quality, but so different and delicious was their Butter Chicken, I could never enjoy Butter chicken anywhere else in India or anywhere else in the world, including here in the US. Another place I would recommend is at Hutatma Chowk/Flora Fountain in Fort area. A Mangalorean sea food based restaurant called “Mahesh (Lunch Home). It’s a bit pricier but worth the price. Had the best Prawn curry there. Also known for their Crab Dishes.

@@LondonkiLali YW. I hope you have a great time in Mumbai. There was this young British model from UK , just before COVID had kicked in , whose vlogs on Mumbai were fantastic. She had come down with her just married husband who was the Physio for one of the IPL cricket teams. She had found antique shops in Mumbai and vegan cafes that I had not known existed. I forgot her channel’s name , but if I find it will forward it. It had really unique places in Mumbai that she was able to find that amazed me.

Parsis are very nice people , jovial , fun loving and eccentric at times. They are also good cooks and great foodie. Perfectionists to the core in everything they do. Their houses are so clean and have the habit of keeping things in apple pie order. One can have great time with fun loving Parsis.

You have the qualities and the knowledge to make it big on you tube on a country and subject that you love.. you are missing an element or two...the street. The indian streets and the normal people that inhabit them make the Indian experience richer. You are using a TV format with bite size soundbites.. it works well for kids that want a magazine type show. your knowledge and language skills need accentuating with a more languid approach and longer indepth films. Dnt sell yourself short Laura. You, India and youtube are a perfect match.. all the best from an opinionated auld Indiaphile

How wonderful when insular foreigners with a limited palette and no exposure to Indian cuisines proclaim our food "nothing worth shouting about". Does she even know what the "salli" in salli chicken is? Parsi cuisine is a unique blend of Indian west coast and ancient Persian flavours and techniques. And here we have a foreigner dismissing a slice of history.

They are called “Irani Cafes” in India. They have a lot of history with the Indian Independence Movement and those were the places the activists met and talked about things. They are known for old decor and a standard food fare and their Irani chai and Irani Samosas and Bun Moska and the prices were very low. Even in the 80s and 90 s , there were a lot of them remaining but most of them closed down and only very few remain in the whole of India. They are not called “ Parsi restaurants “ as much as they were called “ Irani Cafes” in India and most of them were cafes that served a few Parsi dishes as well.
