Is This Comic Book an Investment Opportunity or Waste of Money?

I unbox and review a mega-key comic book, Brave and the Bold #28 from 1960. This comic book is the first appearance of The Justice League of America, Snapper Carr, and Starro, and is the brainchild of editor Julius Schwartz, the father of the Silver Age. It’s graded by CGC as Universal 6.0 with Cream to Off-White Pages.
I review the historical significance, story and art, and market value of this Silver Age Grail. One of the reasons I like these mega-key books for long term investment is that they just haven't been hit that hard by the bear market in comic books of the last two years-it’s only down 35% from its record high because blue chip assets this sought-after will generally always have buyers stepping in when the market falters. Now may be a great time to buy this blue-chip investment-grade comic book!

    Congrats Dr Paul on owning this mega key for your collection. There are few comics I’d like to own and this is one. Thanks also for the history lesson on how Superheroes came back through DC’s attempt to revive the brand. I’m thankful to own a copy of JLA #1 in fair condition. Has a lot of tape on the cover. I also have Brave & Bold #29 in fair condition. B&B 28 is next but have to wait a bit to afford it. Congrats on this nice grade book.

    Thank you Peter! I found Brave and the Bold 29 and 30 raw in nice mid-to-high grade about 20 years ago. Paid about $300 for the pair at the time, and never regretted it. And i purchased JLA1 in 7.0 at the start of this current market crash for what i thought was a steal (video link below in case you missed it). So i have their first 4 appearances all in at least 6.0. I love the cover to 10, the first appearance of Dr. Light. Would really like a high-grade copy of that issue--mine is falling apart! Good luck in your hunt and thank you for your continued support of the the channel. kzread.info/dash/bejne/i3yny8NvcZbJlKw.html

    Great book. Sekowsky's art is really helped by Murphy Anderson inks. In retrospect, it's disappointing that a better artists didn't work on JLA. Can you imagine the title with Murphy Anderson pencils?

  • @DrPaulKosnik

    @DrPaulKosnik

    6 ай бұрын

    Bronzeville, completely agree. How about Gil Kane? Mike Sekowsky was just not their premiere artist at the time; i guess they didn't consider JLA the flagship title. Funny enough after the first few issues, Marvel didn't have their best artist on Avengers either...by issue 9 Don Heck had taken over from Jack Kirby. Maybe team books were a bit of an afterthought and/or considered just a tool to sell the individual titles.

  • @DrPaulKosnik

    @DrPaulKosnik

    6 ай бұрын

    I do think there is opportunity in the $1,000-$5,000 range of taking some risk on by buying raw, cleaning and pressing, and submitting for grading yourself. But for bigger grails, i tend to like mitigating risk by buying graded. I have a hard time spending >$5,000 site unseen. In person i'd be a bit more comfortable buying a bigger book, but over the internet having the peace of mind of third-party grading is worth it for me. Slabbed books will also be easier for my heirs to liquidate when i've shed this mortal coil, which is comforting.

    @@DrPaulKosnik I agree on internet buying of bigger books. I am starting to love to slabbing my keys but for some I’m keeping them raw for now. I have a whole lot of books from collections, shows, flea markets, etc. that I plan to submit. I’ve been wondering about the number of collectors who will buy graded books and then free them from the slabs - Billy Mumy does this as he posts a ton of amazing golden age books on Facebook. I guess those Lost in Space royalties did him well.

    Philip i read the grader's notes and did not see anything i felt was worth the risk of a crack, press, and re-submit. There are some small tears, color-breaking creases, and stains listed along with the edge and corner wear. So no plans to do anything other than enjoy it as is for the moment!
