    True, but their respective register doesn't explain it all, they also know perfectly each other voices and how to make some harmonics enter in resonance, which explains the magical 3rd voice which seems to appear in the middle even when they sing in unison... Benny elegantly said there is "something of a metallic quality" in the sound as soon as they start singing together. There are many sopranos and mezzo-sopranos around the world, still really few of those are able to obtain that result when singing together, it's a bit the same as chemistry on screen when acting, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, regardless of the individual talent.

    Originally a Frida solo song from her 1975 album 'Ensam'. It became a huge hit in Scandinavia, and ABBA decided to record it and replaced the Swedish lyrics with English, and, I believe, after Dancing Queen, it was their biggest hit. It beat so many records on chart lists all over.

    What a song, what a group, what a sound, what imagery, what a masterpiece. I rather liked it. Actually I liked it a lot. 1976 was when this was released on the world, and in my opinion it was here that they really showed their brilliance. Waterloo, SOS, Mamma Mia all came before and were good in their own ways but this was a game changer IMO. The single release that came next, of course, changed direction and changed the world for ever.

    No... Frida was always singing the melody... it's just sometimes Agnetha (an-yet-ta) was singing a lower harmony and at other times she was signing a higher harmony. I do find it interesting when the melody is lower than the harmony, or when a mezzo is singing higher than the soprano... the men did a great job arranging their voices, and of course both women are master vocal technicians.

    It's amusing seeing how different people write down how Agnetha's name should be pronounced. Because certain letters have a different sound or emphasis in various languages so we could all be looking at how someone thinks it should be pronounced and we'd all still read it and say it slightly different. For a native English speaker, I think the closest way is to say the first part of her name like 'Hang' or 'Bang' but drop the first letter. So you have 'Ang' but the 'g' is very soft and almost mixed into the 'y' of 'yeta'. A Swedish person would say that is still not right, lol, but as I say, we can see even the same letter and say it differently. Back to Fernando. Yes, originally a Frida song in Swedish and a huge hit on the Svensktoppen chart there. The ABBA vocal harmony arrangement normally followed the two women's ranges. But when they occasionally switched for certain passages, such as here and songs like 'I've Been Waiting For You' and 'My Love My Life', it made for a beautiful, angelic sound. It's surprising ABBA didn't do it more.

  • @ArthurVerhulst

    @ArthurVerhulst

    I think the first A of Angetha's name isn't pronounced as the English native speakers would pronouce the A of 'bang'. As in other Germanic languages, in Swedish an A-sound is more like how the vowels are pronouned in words like 'love', 'but, 'stuck' etc. In phonetics, this sound is represented as a V upside down.

  • @chelseacharger

    @@ArthurVerhulst I can only go by how it sounds when Agnetha herself or her ABBA bandmates have pronounced her name in interviews. Even English people from different regions will pronounce the same word differently. LOL.

That's why I love this, in Chiquitita you can hear Frida clearly on the lower and Agnetha the higher part. And the last line 'Sing a new song Chiquita' they both go a bit higher. I reckon I let the music speak with Frida as lead is their most "cinematic" song. Thank You For The Music is their most "musical theatre" song and is just an utterly beautiful one. By the way at some point you should check out their live performance of does your mother know and then whole in your soul (two in a row live at wembley as they lead into one another) and you'll get to see all of them being duper energectic. Or for somw super energectic live kicks from their earlier years try"so long made in sweden for export". I mean kicks literally. Also if you can find a good quality version of "Why does it have to be me" live in Australia. Frida really rules the roost in this live performance kocks and all whilst Agnetha is offstage getting changed for their nect set.

    Agnetha I think in Swedish her name is stressed actually on the last vowel… most times it’s stressed the second syllable.. Ag Ne tha and in Swedish I think it’s more AnjethA pronunced. Frida is a nik for Anni-Frid…

  • @mudshark5393
    @mudshark53932 жыл бұрын

    Marissa, you were really, really close with her name there at the end, the g is just even more subtle. In Sweden, when spelling 'ng' we often drop the leading 'n' if it's followed by an 'n'. So 'ngn' becomes just 'gn', this is also true for names.... like Agnes, Ragnar, and Agneta, to name a few. Agneta would therefore be pronounced more like Ang-neta. (Edit) ...Oops, the comments loaded really slowly, sorry for the repetition. :)

    The proper Swedish way to pronounce her name would be easiest to pick up from a video in swedish, I reckon. I see many variants offered below and haven't found a single correct one yet. It doesn't help that she tended to pronounce it slightly different each time for the english reporters/aduience, or putting too much emphasis on one syllable to help them (but not how you would say it in casual speech). If I tried to reproduce the sound using english spelling the closest would be "Uhngnehta" (but hey, I'm just a random dude on the internet).

    You can hear a lot of foreign influences in their music, but strangely enough nothing American except in their disco rhythms on some songs. The Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Sabbath all have their roots in the American blues but these individuals went their own way.

    No, Fernando was on her "Frida Ensam" solo album, released in 1975. The Swedish solo version of "Fernando" was explicitly written for Frida, so the album would contain something unique and new. The song became the album's most popular track, spending nine weeks at #1 on Svensktoppen. The English version recorded by ABBA became one of the group's biggest hits. Eleven Women In One House (Elva kvinnor i ett hus) was Agnetha's solo album also released in 1975. So both albums came out during the ABBA era.

    Agnetha is pronounced with the 'g' merged into the 'n' in the same way as one would say 'lasagne' and the 'h' is silent giving it the pronunciation of ' etta' - "An-yet-a" not Agneetha or any other mistaken pronunciation. Once you say it once, it's easy to get - "AG-NET-A" :-) ❤
