IS THIS A SECRET TO SMOOTHER WASHERS?!

Ойын-сауық

Recently I started mixing something with my regular oil lubricant on some of my washer knives. The result was surprising…

I've tried this with my large Inkosi. Crk grease and 10w nano oli. Maybe 10% more smooth than with grease only. So, yes, I will work a little. Do not expect too much.

I can definitely attest to this. I got a Umnumzaan in on Friday, and after deploying it which definitely showed resistance, I cleaned it and added that “PB&J” (Flourinated grease and KPL Heavy) it was like night and day.

Like most novices to the hobby, CRK with their precision manufacturing and history, was the first knife I wanted. Now, after hoarding more sought after grails for almost a year, I thought it time to go back and acquire my first CRK. Having previous experience with other washer based knife, I knew about the possible break-in period and some methods I successfully used in lieu of month long useage. However, what I did not expect was the Herculean efforts needed to pry open my new CRK using both hands. Despite a complete disassembly, cleaning, and thorough greasing, it was substantially easier to thumb roll (with a 50% deployment rate) but thumb flicking would be a forgone afterthought. There was significant force required to eject the blade from the locking detent ball. Perhaps my thumb needed some training or more likely, this new CRK zaan needed a new home. A final effort of the aforementioned dissassembly, slight washer sanding with 2000 grit sandpaper, the addition of nano oil 10W+grease, and loosening of the pivot collar, and viola! My small sized female hands can easily thumb deploy this oversized knife. I guess I'll be keeping it in the collection now :). Thanks for the informative video!

Pure serpentine oil infused with nano silver particles, the exact ratio of which depends on the combination of blade steel and phosphorus bronze washer, is the only way to go!

Late to the game here. Thanks for the video! I just got my first CRK, an Umnumzaan, and it is stiff. I'm going to give it another week of opening and closing then I'll try your method. I'm either going to use KPL and the grease or Gunny Juice. Have you ever lightly polished your washers (I have) or is that taboo? Thanks again!

  • @cody3078

No need to polish the washers. Zaan is a bear to break in but as it polishes naturally and your thumb callouses develop you’ll forget how you ever struggled with it

Yup, you can also polish as well. I’ve gone as far as to lightly wet sand with 2000 grit before polishing with Flitz. This combo of lube and grease is the icing on the cake though I think…

I use "Slick 'Em All" and plain old 3 in 1 oil, which is a LIGHT Machine oil.....works GREAT........the REAL trick is to get the clearances set right...especially on a Sebenza, which is more difficult because the Pivot is supposed to be set tightened TIGHT, and to function correctly, the tolerance is measured in 10 thousandths....which most folks have no way to measure.....soooo....if you take too much off the washers smoothing them, you must take some off the bushing to compensate.....fun stuff........my Sebenza will now Drop shut, (until it hits me thumb), and is an easy thumb Flik, with no Blade rock or lock rock....and BTW, it's less than a week old,... Magnacut also ! .... love it ! ....best knife ever made by anybody anywhere.....OnWard........

@@TheCasualCutter alright, I'm now the proud owner of some Finish Line brand Extreme Fluoro grease. Being a scientific kinda guy, I'm trying out the grease-only approach on my Spydiechef and Endela before testing your half & half method. The smoothness is a huge step up from mineral oil, but it's not a fast action. Just super luxurious feeling. I'll try out the half & half next.

What I find interesting is how first the author states that washers are superior because they are flat against the blade, implying that they really never need maintenance. BUT quickly follows with cleaning, re-lubing these supposedly 'never need cleaning' knives. Huh? Strange enough, to be sure, but then to follow up with 'ok, if you put LIGHT oil on HEAVY grease (duh) it works BETTER. Yeah, almost as good as bearings. Here's the real point, for the price of CRK knives, they should NEED no "break in", they should be perfection right out of the box. The fact that not only do they NEED break in, but even after being "worn in" you STILL need "magic sauce" to make them function almost as well as bearings do right out of the box. Things that make you go Hmmmmmm. BTW, teflon washers are always smoother than phosphor bronze. This is why a $12 SRM is as smooth out of the box as a tuned and "worn in" CRK.
