Great video Matthew! Some other less expensive nebbiolo wines to try are from northern Piedmonte Best nebbiolo I ever tasted was a 1974 Le Colline Monsecco Gattinara in the late eighties The wines from this area are more" burgundian" in style lighter body more aromatics Try wines from Ghemme or Carema Vallana Spanna was good back in the day but heard not what they used to be Will need to hunt them down as distribution can be limited

Glad to see someone doing this comparison. Naoussa is very underrated! 2017 was a really good vintage but Xinomavro from Naoussa typically needs 10years of aging if you want to understand its true potential. With bottle aging it develops some leather and olive flavors and the tannins slowly mellow down. Btw, the producers in Naoussa make significantly smaller quantities and therefore those wines are hard to find. Ramnista is a great example but there are some other gems from Naoussa that are even better! I like Argatia, Karydas and Dalamaras. With regards to Xinomavro appellations, you forgot to mention Goumenissa where Xinomavro is blended with Negoska. Chatzivaritis is an incredible producer from that region that will certainly surprise you!

Just returned from both Greece and Barolo and had both vintages. As you were going through the tasting notes, it brought me back to my tasting experience at Ratti. I'll say that the closed feeling of the 2017 takes a little while to open up but still contains grippy, jagged tannins and much less fruit than the Xinomavro. What I love about Greek wines, especially from Naoussa is their approachibility even from a shorter aging period. Great comparison between the two since that Mavro does have a hint of sweet tobacco that is an acquired taste. Greek wines are definitely underrated.

Nowadays there are actually two styles in Naoussa. The classic one, not hiding the tannic character of the Xinomavro. These ones require quite a few years of ageing to start taming their fierce tannins. Argatia and Foundi are examples of this classic approach. Then there is the new school which is the work of Thymiopoulos and its followers. These are indeed much more approachable in their youth thanks to much softer tannins. I once read Thymiopoulos mentioning that his vineyards planted on a poorer soil contributed to the softer tannins of his wines. It's probably only a part of the explanation. In any case, aged Naoussas (say beyond 10 years old) are worth the wait as there aromas evolve quite a lot over the time. Note that a restaurant in Boston is now listing a bunch of 30+ years old Naoussas. That must be an experience.

I know nothing about Xinomavro, although you have tickled my curiosity, but all of the Barolos I have accumulated since and including the '13s are tucked away in the merchant's cellars while I drink through my 11s and 12s - the 10s are still developing. Five years is way too young for Barolo, with the possible exception of '18. Not surprised you were fooled. Coincidentally, I have the other half of a bottle of '12 supermarket Barolo (Araldica) started on Sunday which I will finish tonight.

It’s just that I have been serious with wine for just a bit more than a year now and always seek for good recommendations of more experienced guys as orientation. But at the end of the day, I will always check if this can be applied to me or not. For example, My cellar consists of a fair amount of new world because I really do like them and a bit of age serves them well too :). Don’t really agree on that a cellar should mostly consist of Riojas, Brunellos, Barolos etc for aging purposes.
