In 1969 my fiancé and I walked into the Capitol building through the "front" door, wandered all over the building and was never once challenged by anyone. In fact, I don't remember even seeing a guard. People today have no idea what "freedom" and "responsibility" really mean.

My husband and I went there in 1980 and did the same thing. We walked up the steps, around the rotunda, through the corridors and even into the house and senate (they were not in session as usual). We went into the old senate chamber and touched the statues from the 50 states and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves with no questions asked...because we knew how important this building was to this nation and we respected it.

In Feb of '91 a friend and I say down in the intersection of hwy 49 and Indian boundary and smoked a joint while watching the lights change. The whole time no one, not even a cop at 2 in the morning came by. We were 16, no cameras, free as could be and knowing it then; we later flagged down a cop for a ride home even though we were way out past curfew. The cop was dumbfounded at how as-a-matter-of-fact we were about how little we cared about being out. Not a single cop in town was ever going to catch us on foot and we used to get them to chase us for fun. Known of that is possible today. I remember the shouts of joy, skiing fast through the woods. I hear the echos..I remember

By the way, the Capital does NOT have a wall around it, there is fencing around it. A Wall and A Fence are 2 different things. A wall is permanent and if taken down would require major construction. A fence can be taken down easily without major construction.

Actually i read an article about underground dumbs' that one is set up for the capitol as well as the whitehouse. I took pics of the article so i could reread it. Its at white sulfur springs in west virginia. Big enough for the senate, the house of reps n a separate hall for joint session. Accomodations for the whitehouse hotel is exactly like the WH. Makes me wonder if they really are at dc or west virginia.

The budget for the Capitol visitors center almost doubled when the Supreme Court insisted to add a tunnel for them. This is also where the tunnel for Amtrak, and half of the east coast rail traffic, passes through and was recently upgraded. Because they were already vetted, the same construction contractors made the underground expansions from the WH to Blair House and parts of Whitehaven Street.
