Is there a future for White Afrikaners? - BBC Our World

After campus protests some of South Africa's most prestigious universities have agreed to stop teaching in Afrikaans - the language of the Afrikaner white minority who controlled the country during the brutal apartheid era. More than 20 years after the end of apartheid some Afrikaners claim their language, and culture, are being marginalised. For Our World Benjamin Zand meets Afrikaners who fear for their future in the 'Rainbow Nation'.

We are Portuguese. My son went to Stellenbosch University. It IS THE BEST UNIVERSITY! My son studied in English. Degrees are offered in both Afrikaans and English. There should not be any issue here. It's all just politics. Afrikaans is the language of whites AND coloureds/mixed race people in SA. This idea of removing Afrikaans from University is a racist oppressive idea by politicoians/ANC. It's a human rights abuse to not allow people to learn and speak in their mother tongue. Afrikaans should not be removed, more universities in other languages should be built. The problem does not lie in Afrikaans, but in an incompetent government who does not cater for all 11 official languages. The Afrikaners built SA, they built a functioning strong SA. The ANC is breaking it down. Don't try to change Stellenbosch. It's the best University in SA at the moment. There are many many Universities in SA, if Stellenbosch is not suitable go elsewhere. There are plenty of English universities in SA. Yes, pure Afrikaans is being preserved by those who speak it which is right thing to do. There's nothing wrong with being white. Or Afrikaans. Afrikaans is my 3rd language. Why should blacks feel uncomfortable amongst Afriform? Imagine how whites feel amongst EFF!!? Everything that ANC changes and decolonises turns to sh*t.

You're a hateful collectivist simpleton. Are you to blame for the acts of your parents, ancestors and other people with the same skin color or gender? Or are you as an individual, responsible for your own actions only? Besides, the white people today volunteered to give away power. Not to mention the fact the afrikaners and the large black ethnic groups arrived in South Africa at about the same time and apartheid was a result of hostile groups where one was significantly stronger than the other despite increasing numerical inferiority. Had both groups been blacks, no one would have really cared.

Yes we did this last year and yes we did this the year before and yes we did this for 400 years please trust us we are good people now are you kidding me since when has Europe done anything good for Africa. Conlonization destroyed africa. European white wash african history and claim europeans achieve everything. Why would we want to deal with such a people. Who steal murder and pillaged every other race on this planet. Understand not only do Africans not trust your people...but asians, americans and all other none whites. As economies boom in africa we will slowly cut off ties with you. We don't want violence but to honor the ancestors you need to leave period. How do you expect us to believe anything you say when that isn't our experience. Yes forgiveness is key but we will never forget. We know your European allies will do what ever they can do down african and we will over come you can't kill the black race. Your people will turn on anyone without hesitation and justify transgression with religion saying that the white man is the great savior not the case and your the only ones who think that. You lose your power you say don't act like you. That laughable. Africans want white people off the continent we really don't want nothing to do with Europe. Its not about vengeance we don't want to kill no body we just want you to leave and if you don't then we cross that bridge plan and simple.

In November there has been at least one attack every day so far. During the month of October 2019, there were twenty-eight farm attacks and three farm murders, whilst one farm attack was successfully averted in South Africa. During September 2019, there were forty-six farm attacks and seven farm murders, whilst one farm attack was averted. And the authorities continue to deny the existence of these heinous crimes. So you want to say that students who can't speak Afrikaans apply to an Afrikaans university, because it is easier to get there, beacuse of a smaller number of students? But still, it is not a unique thing. In many countries there are study areas where it is easier to get or more difficult to get. For example many students want to study law and not all would get there and few students want to study mathematics. So what would happen if a student who wanted to study law and was not admitted decided to study maths, was admitted and then complained that he/she had to study maths?

Just Me, you hsve misunderstood my intention. I am IN FAVOUR of teaching in Afrikaans at the universities (Afrikaans sal bly). I just wanted to say that if protesters see any problem in the fact that Afrikaans is used as instruction language, they should choose an English university. If there is need to build new universities it should be done so. I said it just hypothetically. But if in fact there is no such a need and all the movement insisting on changing the instruction language is just to make trouble for the sake of making trouble - it is very sad. BTW, I am not South African and I am not a native English speaker. I am from Poland. I only visites SA once. Unfortunately I was not in CT, but I met people from CT area and I have noticed they spoke Afrikaans, regardless their skin colour. You can go to any number of universities in the RSA and have classes in English (or Xhosa or Zulu etc.). Even in Stellenbosch, the post-graduate courses are (or at least were) in English. If you don't want your under-graduate classes in Afrikaans, then, here's a thought, don't go to an Afrikaans-speaking university :-/. Problem solved.

I can see your point that it is an Afrikaans University so if you don't speak it then you should not go there but this is the problem that will always arise when you have a society trying to recover from tremendous injustice. There are too many open wounds. Every action is scrutinized by the former oppressed in terms of proximity to past actions. Example: Are they trying to make yet another place where we aren't welcome to edge us out of the best schools yet again? No doubt some students and teacher likely do breath a sigh of relief that there are less black students there. The past political leaders went there. Are there left over ideologies lurking in that school where not long ago so many did believe in racial inequalities? Will the students who go to that school form high level connections that make it harder for black, indian, and colured S.A. to get the few high level jobs in the country forming a network that its hard for non white to break into? This is what angers people and scares them especially in light of the horrid past. A past that is causing problems today.

I think the government policy of acknowledging *all major South African languages* is *well intended*, but counter-productive in academia. On the tertiary level, all universities should *exclusively use English*, which is the primary language of academia worldwide. Afrikaans is a useless language in this regard and a relic of the past. The indigenous South African languages are also not very useful, since people will have to deal with English literature, journals and articles anyway. Every South African who makes it to university should be proficient in English anyway! BTW, even the Chinese and the Russians publish most of their academic publications (journals, articles, dissertations, research papers...) in English!

In South Africa their more then 10 recognized official languages, two are colonial, afrikaanse and English. The most spoken is Zulu and xhosa (native tongues), yet the medium of instruction is (colonial)English in most primary, secondary and tertiary education in South Africa and no other indigenous language groups object to this, because it's a universal language that most understand and speak. And truly, that´s probably the only way of coexistence - the poor people (kids) in the slums need to get a chance to achieve higher education. There are many cases all around the world which prove it right - young people are malleable and once they´re shown a positive example they follow. Then they try to get out of the misery they were born in. Guys, people should learn, listen and cooperate from one another. Whites could learn a simpler way all life (meaning less demanding), black Africans should learn all the good things European civilization offers: technology, science, engineering, ability to plan, foresee and organize things.

The points made by the young lady about Afrikaan language is appreciated but still somewhat in error. The fact as actually pointed out by her but not expanded on is that accurate translation requires the same concepts to be available in each language. It is seldom the case that different language contains the same concepts so loss of concepts would be critical where technical language exists in one discipline and not in another. Trying to eliminate the expressed language by order is often tantamount to dumbing down the whole lesson. Pity she has not learned this.

@Martin Stop being like this, man! Both sides should change the way they think and act! Whe you say "your people" or "white people the most beautiful race..." you're making a lot of trouble. You have to remember how black people suffered in the entire world with the white people for centuries; maybe that's the cause of so much fight today (it does not justify that whites have "to pay" for what they did in the past, because the world belongs to everyone). I'm from Brazil and I can say that. I'm a black man who never suffered like many black people here, but I heard a lot of shit from white people but I never wanted them dead (I'm not saying you want somebody dead). I always wanted things to be different here and there. I also know that white people suffer racism there, but the only way to stop it is when both black and white people forget about race and work together for a better life to everyone. God bless you and your country and remember that one day everybody is gonna die, so let's be friends in order to live in peace.

So Afrikaners are anxious but that does not come close to answering the question. They made some very serious claims - that their culture and safety are threatened - yet this story flippantly waves them away with the assumption that white privilege, wealth and education somehow insulate them. If that were the case how can the government institute discriminatory programs like BEE or politicians like Julius Malema or Jacob Zuma openly talk of seizing their land and killing them? Given the precedent set in Zimbabwe I would take their claims much more seriously. There are so many assumptions that have to be unpacked from this video that is seems like an inside joke.

To quote Simone Cupido who is mixed race (So very likely has white ancestry): “Your institutions should reflect kind of the demographics of your country.” For us Canadian and American viewers can you imagine being white in Canada or America and saying something like this lol? 1) You’d be cancel cultured fired from your job or suspended/disciplined by your school. 2) The blacks would be reporting you on social media, protesting in the streets, rioting, looting, throwing bricks at cops, likely shootings. It’s interesting how black people nowadays can say racist sh*t at free will and get away with it, absolutely insane! Also in Canada and the United States the blacks that decide to educated themselves nowadays have all the advantages and get way more opportunities than the majority of the population (Whites), 110% facts! Sooooo sick of the anti-white rhetoric…

Skin color is just the result of varying melanin. Being proud of your skin color is like being proud of the placement of your eyes on your face. You have no control over it, it's natural, and it has no effect on your intelligence. There are only cultural differences, and nobody wants to learn one anothers' culture. We're all to stubborn and self-entitled. Education is what is lacking in this country, and our children should be the focus of the future... I am not an expert on South Africa's education system, but I do assume that there are universities available where courses are taught in English. Surely this is all to do with vengefulness, repression and politics and has nothing to with providing an egalitarian education system. As the person already mentioned, for every 8 black workers you need 2 white workers, 2 coloured workers and 1 Indian worker, so even if the white person graduating from Stellenbosch University get his/her (so-called 'privileged' education) their opportunities are delegated to the needs of other races.

I’m sorry but BLM is Marxist in its foundation and wants to destroy the family and the United States itself. We have bent ourselves into a pretzel to get along and live peaceably. I think, it’s not about that. It’s a about revenge against whites. I’m under no obligation to sacrifice myself and my children to a Marxist mob. I think you’ll find at the foundation of the ANC it’s also a racist Marxist mob with murderous intent. “Kill the Boer”. If you’re white, you won’t be able to be woke and anti-racist enough. 6:00 The real question is does the 70% white attendance reflect a demographic or does it reflect the merit of the student? If the attendance was based on demographic rather than aptitude or merit then it would reflect the very thing that is being opposed which is racial discrimination. Also if you are really talking about demographics, then by all rights the prevalent language should reflect the demographic of the immediate area and not the entire country. If you were in Canada for example where the city or province you live in is majority French speaking whereas the majority of the country was English speaking, would it be beneficial to insist on English curriculum at a predominantly french area? On the flip side to this point, globally English is one of the most widely used languages in business, and if you are to make any headway then it is probably in your own best interest to adopt or at least educate yourself in that language. As for the preservation of heritage, there have been many many instances where a culture over time loses some or eventually all of its traditions to integrate with an ever changing world. Afrikaans although a few hundred years old now, is one of the newest languages in the world. It comes as no surprise that it would be short lived especially given the size of its population and influence globally.

We all know what it reflects. The same outcomes are found in every country on Earth. The average IQ in Africa is around 73. White settler colonials built the country of South Africa. Before they arrived it was mud huts and barbarism. And that's what it will be again if they're forced out. Or some other colonial group, like the Indians or Chinese, will take charge.
