So - I've had a Yamaha Revstar Professional for a while - but I think the more important question was around how good are the standards. In the UK, the Standard are about £900 cheaper than the Professional range, and boast some impressive specs. I bought this Standard, and tried it at a gig over the weekend - GREAT GUITAR

I played a standard a few days ago at a local music store and I'm going back to bring it home. It felt perfect to my hands and body and the tone was fantastic. I tried it with different amps and it sounded great on all of them. My oldest guitar is an acoustic guitar that I bought way back in 79, I have several acoustics, but she's the one I play more. Yamaha makes great instruments at every price range.

That is one thing I really like about my Revstar Standard with Humbuckers (also have a Standard P90) of this new remake is how good it sounds on every amp. P90 as well. And if you like the feel of it in your hands, then get it. It will become a favorite guitar for you imho. Is for me. Biggest complaint from detractors, is they don't like the neck shape. Me, I love it.

Love the soundbites you gave us later on in the video, which revealed - much better than in many reviews out there - the tonal differences between the pickup settings, without lots of grit or amp flavor clouding the picture. Fell in love with this guitar right after it was released…but for one thing (and your vid confirms this): it‘s missing a bit of single-coil crispness that I‘d also want it to have. So now I‘m looking more for a not-so-expensive Tele (such as the Sire Larry Carlton T3) to fill the bill, though I‘d love the look and other tonal choices of the Yamaha if it could only be a bit snappier/crispier at will. So thanks for pointing out that Yamaha would be well advised to come out with other pickup options on this model, e.g. with single coils added in. Maybe they‘ll listen?

The design (at least the body shape) is the same as the late 1970's era Yamaha SG's which were infinitely superior to anything Gibson could produce. I have a similar era Yamaha SF500 (Super Flighter) which is made in Japan, but unlike the Yamaha SG's it has a bolt on neck, a slab mahogany body & is more strat shaped (lower horn like a SG but upper horn more like a strat). An excellent guitar, mine will just need a refret as it is on it's original frets & I bought it about 35 years ago & the frets were pretty much gone then. The Revstars look a great guitar.

Great review! I own the P90 Standard in black, and it is a gorgeous guitar. With that said, John is spot on about the electronics, where some of the middle positions and the boost push/pull sounds weren't that good in my opinion. I wound up swapping out the Yamaha P-90's for a set of Seymour Duncan Hot P-90 Silencers, got rid of the push/pull switch and all electronics, replaced with CTS pots, 3-way blade switch for simplicity and high quality caps. I also lowered the action by filing the nut, which was way too high from the factory and adjusted the neck relief. My Standard now sounds awesome and plays extremely well.

I agree with everything John said about the Revstar line. There is a reason guitarists as top drawer as John Cordy and Mateo Mancuso have Revstars. I have the Pro (Japanese made) with Humbuckers and love it. The price was within $100 Canadian of the California made Fender Strat Pro I first ordered, but I find I play the Yamaha a lot more (tuning stability of the Strat is an issue). I also think the Standard single coil ordered with the Standard Humbucker model makes for a great pair, a genuinely good deal. Even so, I didn't mind paying for the Pro and believe the real comparison is with a Les Paul (equal marks, in my view), but at less than half the price. I do like the black finish offered in their Standard line. There was only one Pro available at the time across the country in the large music store chain, and it was the yellow-red fade finish, and it's grown on me ... a bit more mature than the racing stripe finishes that 19 year olds go for. Natural finishes would be a really nice top off one day on a new line of Revstars.

I bought a Revstar RS620 in 2018. Yamaha's quality is way better than an Epiphone or Squier/Fender in the same price range. This is a well-made instrument! The RS620 has two humbuckers. They were good, but not great. Last December, I decided to change the Yamaha pickups for a couple of Bare Knuckle's The Mule. Best decision ever made! These new Revstars are looking even better and I don't have a P90s guitar in my collection! As a rule, I no longer buy guitars until I can try them in person. I hope I can play one in the future.

P90 seduction is setting in on the Bloke. I just can't find my desired tone balance in any other pups. Every amp or modeler is at its best, IME. Doesn't need pedals to compensate. Set git vol low-ish, dial in amp settings. Roll up the volume to desired EQ and push. I especially enjoy my variable tapped set with blend of alnico 2/5 bar mags.

I get your point on the finishes. For me, I love them, but then in my stable, I have 9 Solid Color tops, including my 2 Revstar Standards, 4 Plain top wood grain finishes, and just 1 Flame top. Me, I get tired of Flame all over. I DO wish I could find a mod for the focus switch, to not cut the highs so much. I like the focus on the P90 Revstar, can get Jazz box tones in neck, and great lead tones with the bridge. But, on the Humbucker Revstar Standard, I find it less useful. The OLD Revstar line, Yamaha had all kinds of options like you mention. But, they wanted to simplify that, this time around.

I'm a professional musician and I recently got this fine instrument. In fact I just come from a rehearsal where I played my black Revstar P90 :D I very much agree with everything you said. The colors are a bit "meh", that's why I went with the black one - can't go wrong with black. I would LOVE and gladly spend more money on a model with some nice translucent finishes so you can see the natural wood. That would underline the sound, which I would also describe as very natural. It has an almost acoustic "living" feeling playing it, which is wonderful. It also feels so natural to play, because of how well it is made. That's what surprised me when I took it out of the box. Looking at the price I expected something "ok", mid-range. But these Revstars play absolutely beautifully. Really top tier. I have to admit, even slightly better than my PRS custom 24, which is my main guitar. I also very much agree with your description: it's like you took a Les Paul and brought it to a new level of perfection. So glad I bought this, if you are looking for a new guitar or want something with p90s and don't have a big budget, this is the one to get. Complete recommendation here. It almost feels like a mistake that they made this instrument so good at that price point :D

I got a 620 a few years ago and gigged it the very next day, not even a string change (it came with Elixirs). The only mod I did was a bit steel wool on the back of the neck (at that point I knew it's not going anywhere). For me it's a Les Paul sound with a Strat ergonomy, it's my only non-S type guitar. Every time I played it on stage I got comments about well balanced clear sound, especially if it was the 2nd guitar after breaking a string. Another thing, I hardly ever break strings on it, that's a new one for me.

Ive got three Revstars, one is a Standard - the others, 502 and 702 in the previous incarnation. I agree with much of this review. I much prefer the finish of the earlier range. Re: the comment about the lack of a satin neck, this is easily modded with the judicious use of fine sandpaper. I love the shape of the neck and the stainless steel frets are like butter. I concur with the comments about the pickups and don't find a huge difference between the sounds in the various middle positions - and also the push/pull feature. One thing I have noticed is the angle of the fret board in relation to the body. It's certainly not parallel and the angle between the bridge and the saddle is pronunced (as a consequence?). I've found there may be setting-up issues as a result. Have you noticed how the old mid-range Revis (like the brick burst) hold their resale price? An used 502 can sell for more than a new sunburst Standard.

John Nathan, I appreciate your reviews, your tasty playing and sounds. This topic is interesting because what is pro level? I have a Saint Blues Mississippi Bluesmaster which I always take on stage as my first back up guitar. Korean made and well made, all mahogany, plays smooth and better than the USA tele I had. I got it used for 375 euro, even fitted with Bare Knuckle Mules. That guitar rings and sings and puts a lot of guitars to shame. Anyway, a good player can make a cheaper guitar sound pro level. Imho for anything above 2000 euro the consumer pays mainly the brandname. I had very expensive guitars in the past, but could I express myself better on them than on my current workhorses from which the most expensive one is about 1400 euro. I can see myself gigging with Revstar Standards. They look cool and sound really good.

But it was one of those marmite Yellow fade finishes & it wasn't for me. I looked at the Premium, knowing I wanted P-90s so it was Chris Buck Gold, John Cordy Blue, or Black...so I went with a Standard in Hot Merlot as to not be derivative (and knowing how well the standards play). If Yamaha had more, or more interesting colours, they'd've had an extra $1000 cad out of me. I disgree with the flame top, gets a bit too PRS Blues Lawyer even on the old ones, but some transparent/semi-transparent finishes or perhaps go garish & do sparkle/flake. Personally, I'd just make the Premium have either a nitro finish or a carved top.

I have the RS720B from the first generation of Revstars, and it’s a very nice guitar. It sounds and plays great, and my only complaint is the weight. It’s the heaviest guitar own by quite a bit, including the two Les Pauls I have. I think the newer gen has weight relief, and I can see why they added that.

My Sunset Revstar Pro just arrived. Flawless fit and finish. I like the visual design - classy and sleek. I *really* like the 5 position pickup switch and Boost knob, playing into a clean-to-edge-of-breakup amp. When using the Boost, it really helps to adjust the volume and tone knobs to explore tonal range. Don’t just use Boost as “more volume”. I might lower the bridge slightly, but other than that [chef kiss].

I decided to go full on JNC this past Sunday at church. MY black Revstar P90 Standard made it's debut with the Helix Floor...to me, it sounded great, but that was just through my in-ears. I reviewed the recorded live stream on KZread and it did sound pretty good in the full mix as well. I enjoy playing the Revstar, it feels nice, the fretwork on mine is superb, but I must admit, compared to the PRS SE McCarty 594 and the Sire Vintage S7, it's much, much heavier....not uncomfortable, but noticeable. My favorite pickup positions are 2, 3, and 4....full neck gets too dark, enough yo make it difficult to dial out the clipping through the Helix. If you manage to get it usable, then the bridge pickup "screams" a bit too much....not to mention the hum from the p90s is very apparent. Noise gate on input is absolutely necessary for this guitar.

Anyway it had a bad tuner so I replaced those, the nut wasn't filed right so I had to fix that, replaced the switch and all the pots, put a roller bridge on it, added a BriggsFix to the trem and replaced its spring. Also had to dress the frets. I've never had to do that much work to a guitar to get it right, but I can't really say I'm unhappy with it because now it's great. Just be warned that there are some crap parts on the thing and the QC may not be all that great. Maybe you'll get lucky though.

The only elements for "pro" level (a particularly lame term with regard to electric guitars) would be that the pickups are not microphonic, that the tuners are good enough that you are not having to retune all the time & I suppose you are happy with playability (which is personal & money thrown at it won't really solve that "problem"). What it is really is about is is a guitar out of the box with minimal tweaking going to be good enough to go on stage & be played? Cheaper guitars will in general have pickups that could be microphonic (so changing them out would be the better option). The hardware is going to be lower quality (tuners, bridges etc) so another area where they can be upgraded. Then there is the playability, the frets & the neck - which can be problem & may well need some TLC by a player or a tech. It really is the setup that makes a guitar good, the pickups are really where the sound is produced (tone woods are not a thing in electric guitars). the other thing is if a musician relies on gigging for money or even does it at weekends or at night & has a job they may well want a guitar that will already have the issues addressed. the problem of course is all guitars will develop problems. I mean Gibson's will eventually have a broken headstock, so not the most reliable guitar to play live.

I'd like to know more of how this guitar was in terms of being able to play, or reasonably "cover" many different types of songs in a live gigging scenario (assuming that's what you did)? I know there is a huge "bedroom guitarist" audience out there, but some of us still gig, or at least try to. While I don't expect a p90 equipped guitar to perfectly replicate any cover (and if I wanted a perfect replica I'd play the album at home) did you find it versatile enough to play say a "wedding gig"? I recall you mentioned that on a prior video? Could this be your "one" guitar for a varied gig or is it more of a one trick pony? Thanks again.

I'm getting the sense that this guitar is going to end up being one of the 'classic' guitars that players gravitate towards and seek out 'vintage' aged versions in the years to come. Yamaha is one of the first builders since maybe PRS that has been able to pull this off. Some of Taylor's electrics felt like they might get there but just don't seem to have resonated despite being original and incredibly useful. I started my musical journey playing the saxophone and similarly Yamaha did the same with their professional saxophones, standing side-by-side with Selmer in building instruments that professional players were thrilled to play.
