Is The Wilson Ball The Reason For Bad NBA Shooting?

So many of you have asked me about an update video on the Wilson NBA Official basketball, so here it is. BUT I also wanted to talk a little bit about what NBA players have said about the basketball, and some more of the differences I've noticed between the two.

    I’ve noticed the long rebounds as well, I’ve gotten a few games in at 24 hour fitness. I do like shooting with the Spaulding better. I still have a hard time convincing many people to play with either of these balls or the evo nxt (I suspect people don’t like the color). If it ain’t an evo these kids ain’t trying to hear it.

    I think it's a generational thing. You could bring a Nike Championship or even a NCAA game ball, the Evolution is going to win every time. That ball became the high school basketball for A GENERATION of people. No one ever wants to play with either of these unless they know and IYKYK 👍

    The NBA spalding ball is the pinnacle of basketballs period! You are so right that if you are a poor shooter or ball handler it will be exposed. I shoot amazingly with it and i love the bounce on the dribble. It reacts quickly off the floor and dribbling seems qucker if that makes sense. It also has a very consistent feel! Its funny cause i try to get players to play with it and they wont play with it. They say it feels weird, im like it feels perfect

    Someone decided to swipe my broken in evolution basketball a couple day ago. Killed my vibe immediately and had to leave after searching for an hour. Besides that this particular ball was great, I had it for 3-4 years. Every aspect was great, people would ask me what I did to it to make it have as much grip as it did. I washed it with warm water and dish soap, only like twice. One time I cleaned it with a sanitizer wipe because I was hoopin on a dusty floor. I don’t think that matter at all really, however I’m hurt about it. So I was looking for reviews and saw this review and was thinking I’m going to try this out only to find out they’re out of stock. 😩 I’ll probably just wait to get a ball until this becomes available, if it does again. Whichever ball I get if I’m not playing with it I’m locking that thing up 🔒🔒🔒

    Maaaan the pain of getting your ball stolen is so real. It's always the broken in evolution too, but so many people have that ball I actually had someone take my broken in ball by "mistake" and leave me their new one. I still had a ball, but now I had another 2 years I had to put back into it. This Wilson official will feel like your lost evolution when your hands are sweaty. I would also suggest the Authentic Indoor if you can't get the official. But an evolution is always needed.

    I have both. The Wilson is something to get used to. The spalding was a better fit for shooting but it got great after it was broken in. Still attempting to break in the Wilson and it’s been tougher to do. Doesn’t feel like there is as much bounce but still working on it. The spalding is favorable. Feels comfortable and it has deeper channels

    The only way your review would be better would be if it was recorded because you're on the money with ALL of it. I've only see one dark dark brown Wilson, and the guy told me he used a leather treatment to break it in faster so maybe that's the key. I'm too afraid to mess up the leather for good doing that 😂

    I have a Spalding TF 150 outdoor ball size 7, and then i have a WIlson NBA Minnesota Timberwolves basketball, here is what i have noticed of difference between the two, the wilson has a really nice feel and handle but its also significantly heavier than my spalding ball. (both are the same size and meant for outdoor use) The Spalding i can easily from the NBA 3 point distance and have a chance at scoring, with the Wilson i have to use both hands and rather need throw the ball rather than shoot it if its gonna get even close to the goal and thus most likely wont get it through the hoop due to an unbalanced shot, now i have read that people are claiming that some of these Wilson basketballs are actually roughly 66 ounzes heavier than the balls that NBA players are using, which to me is crazy but just might be true, if i try to do a one hand shot at the 3 point line with the Wilson its flying distance is several feets shorter compared to the Spalding ball i usually use.

  • @Love2Hoop

    @Love2Hoop

    2 ай бұрын

    A lot to break down here but I'll do my best. I agree, I have noticed a difference in weight between Spalding and Wilson, where Spalding feels much lighter. Even if by actual weight the difference isn't a lot, it seems more noticeable when playing with the basketballs how Wilson tends to be heavier. One other thing to consider is when comparing two outdoor basketballs you may run into some design differences that lend itself to big discrepancies in the basketballs. Some basketballs have thicker covers to handle the outdoor courts, or an oversized inner bladder to help with the ball being bouncy even if somewhat underinflatted, but it causes the ball to feel heavier and travel different on the shot.

  • @TheTigress

    @TheTigress

    @@Love2Hoop My shooting always suffers dramatically when I am forced to use an Evolution vs my NBA game ball. I am an excellent shooter from anywhere on the court with my NBA ball but with an Evolution, the ball is always slipping out of my hands when trying to shoot because my hands get really sweaty and that ball does not absorb moisture like the leather balls do. Additionally, the deeper, wider channels on the Evolution get in the way of my finger placement and seems to throw off my shot. I have a very unorthodox shot form (but it works) and I don't really rely on channels for shooting like others do. For handling, those same wider, deeper channels makes the ball feel "smaller" because there is technically less surface area since the channels are so deep compared to a Spalding NBA ball, so I really prefer the narrower, shallower channels for better handling. Lastly, the weight of the Evolution is too heavy, in my opinion. I have a very quick release, and the weight difference actually prevents me from shooting the same shots I can normally get off with my NBA ball due to the weight difference. The Evolution's sponginess also reminds me of a Nerf ball and I don't like it. I cannot fathom how these balls are so widely loved by nearly everyone, especially if you are a shooter. It's probably a decent "layup" ball because of that heavier weight, and sponginess off the glass, but it's absolutely terrible for shooting.

    Awesome comparison! Quick question though, been using my Wilson official nba ball exclusively indoors for a few weeks now and was wondering is it normal for it to have these scuff marks all over the ball? It looks like it’s peeling, like a thin layer of the pebbles is scratched off. Looks like I took sandpaper and just scraped it across. Mind you the gym I go to is 24hrfitness and they don’t keep their court in best shape. Only thing I could think of that’s causing this is the rim? The rims at the gym you could see that the orange paint is gone and the metal exposed. Is it bad if my ball gets like this? Should I stop using it at that gym and use it at a better maintained gym?

    There are two types of "scuffs" and I want to make sure we're talking about the same kind. My Wilson has some of the peeling you're talking about, and that's a good thing. They'll be noticeable for a while, but eventually will start to fade away. That comes from the leather being worn down and starts to take its natural shape. Unfortunately, the X batch was of far lower quality than the U code balls and had issues with the panels coming unglued, and overall build quality being inferior. Another commenter said that the factory that made the U balls had way better quality control but was closed down. You can spot an X ball by noticing that the "Official game ball" font is noticeably more bold than on the U version. The channels on the X ball are also a little shallower than the U ball. Avoid the X balls at all costs. They are trash. There are also "C" balls out there, but a bit more rare. Those are basically the how the game balls were like before 2007, before they re-introduced the leather balls back after the microfiber Cross Traxxion ball change that was a disaster. Those aren't as good as the U balls because the C balls used a different type of finish on the leather, which gave them a very shiny, slick coating that never wears off. It doesn't feel the same and doesn't absorb water like the U balls do.

    @@TheTigress thanks for the explanation. It's very helpful. I'm wondering where you even found this info? I'm noticing the Wilson balls also have their own variation of 3 letter codes: some start with "N" others with "V"...

    @@randy7425 I found the information about the different factories from another youtube comment from someone who lives in China and knows about the different factories. The Wilson balls do have different letter codes. I have one that has a VEN code. I think the N balls were from earlier batches while the V balls seem to be the ones released from late March and on. One reviewer on the Wilson official website said that the V batch seems nicer than the N batch. I did some own personal research about the different letter codes on the Spalding balls, and I have also had experience with the X ball because I had one for a short period, and it was garbage. The panels were glued poorly and were peeling off on the ends. The rubber for the seams was also of lower quality and the outer layer was peeling off. That's when I dove in and researched it and found out that the U factory was shut down. I am guessing since Spalding knew their contract was up, they no longer had to make leather basketballs to the highest quality NBA standards so cheapened out on their final retail version of the batch. The Model M seems to have similar issues because that is also made at the X factory. I have owned 3 and each one had its own set of issues. The first two suddenly stopped holding air, while my 3rd one holds air fine, but I notice that the channel depth isn't fully equal on the entire ball. One panel seems to have noticeably puffier channel edges than the rest of the ball. I have also owned a C ball Spalding when I ordered an official game ball from Amazon years back and was sent a C ball. The finish and texture was completely different and not as good as the U version. I used it until it suddenly stopped holding air. but was glad to get a new U ball to replace it. There's actually a video on KZread somewhere of a guy reviewing the different types of Spalding game balls which really shows the differences between a U ball and a C ball with a water drop test.

    Hey, man. I recently got the Spalding leather ball directly from Spalding. In less than two months, the ball has blackened/darkened too much imo. Yours still looks new and orange. My YMCA court has some dust but nothing like the LA Fitness courts, but could it be that the dust darkened my ball too much? How dusty is your court? Maybe Spalding sent me a defect?

    Could be a couple of things but it sounds like you and @Alex Ali got some of it out the way. The basketball I have is actually an OLDER NBA ball from the David Stern era so the leather might be different. You would actually think just over time it would turn just due to age, but hasn't yet. The courts I'm at are fairly clean, but I probably have put equal hours in the Wilson as I have the Spalding.

    I don’t agree. You’re comparing Wilson synthetic college balls to leather. I agree the Spaulding ball is softer. But it doesn’t compare to a well worn Wilson. As far as an overall court rock. The old NBA ball doesn’t wear well. The leather stretches and gets overly soft. The Wilson is a much better performer over time. Tighter leather worn well is better. Wilson made a Jet Supreme leather rock that is superior. The new NBA ball is similar. Over time the leather stretches and becomes superior. Much superior bounce off the floor. More predictable on the dribble.

  • @Love2Hoop

    @Love2Hoop

    2 жыл бұрын

    So when you say Wilson is a synthetic college ball you mean most of the Wilson basketballs right? The NBA Official has a 100% leather cover like the Spalding, and if I'm not mistaken the leather comes from the same distributor but I might be wrong. Where I do agree with you the most is that my Wilson has slowly started to break in and to be honest the consistency is still there all the way around.

    Spalding all day. I have both, Spalding bounce is so true. The Wilson bounce is awful, also the writing on the Wilson is very cheap for a 200$ ball wether that matters to ppl idk. The Wilson in IMO feels nothing like the evolution what so ever. Evo is very soft.

  • @Love2Hoop

    @Love2Hoop

    2 жыл бұрын

    Well the Evo is going to feel different because of the core and composite leather. The leather is cheaper so you need more of it so it'll last. Idk if the writing matters, but your point about the bounce is SPOT ON. The Wilson bounce is really difficult to get used to, especially if you go back and forth between the two.

    @@kawhi2632 The TF Model M is more comparable to the Spalding NBA balls with 3 letter batch codes that start with the letter X, which is a lower quality ball than the U code Spalding NBA balls. Not surprisingly, both Model Ms that I have had codes beginning with X also. I think they are made from that same factory since the U factory was closed, from what I have read. Both of my Model Ms stopped holding air abruptly after using them for a very short time period. Both balls arrived highly overinflated which I think contributed to damaging the internal bladder. The Model M does feel a little further broken in out of the box, and seemed to have a faster break in time. The bounce was identical to the Spalding NBA, although the texture of the ball pebbling feels just slightly more flat and smooth. The furthest I got into the break in process with one of mine was 2 months, but then quit because I got tired of pumping it up with air every morning. Apparently Spalding is coming out with a fresh batch of Models M's on their website soon, so I am really hoping that they fixed the quality issues of them, because otherwise it was a very decent ball, and $50 less than the Wilson NBA ball.

  • @TheTigress

    @TheTigress

    I agree that the Spalding NBA has a far better bounce at the standard 8 psi. I found that over inflating my Wilson NBA ball to nearly 9 psi fixes that issue and gives it a much better bounce, very comparable to the Spalding NBA.
